February 9, 1836 The USRC Jackson and USRC Washington have been assigned to support operations in the Florida Territory for the duration of the Seminole conflict. Operating from the naval bases at Pensacola and Key West, the cutters will ferry supplies and messages between army forts and commanders in the field, engage in observation of enemy coastal movements, and otherwise act as a reserve combat and transportation force. The USRC Ingham has been sold to officials representing Texas for the sum of $20,000. Commanding officer Captain Ezekiel Jones, renowned for his valor in the Gulf action last year, has been reassigned to other duties within the Cutter Service. Upon learning the news, the New Orleans Bee reflected on Jones's and his ship's service: "[Jones's] prompt and efficient action in the affair of the Montezuma, has taught a neighboring state a valuable lesson of respect for our flag.... [his] vessel is entitled to bear the best motto for a military public servant—SEMPER PARATUS." |

October 5, 1841 A new cutter, the USRC Walter Forward, has been ordered by the service to augment tariff collection and other operations along the Chesapeake Bay. The ship is being built in Washington by William Easby and will be delivered in April 1842. A study has been initiated to examine the potential of limited conversion of cutters to steam propulsion. Messrs. Robert L. Stevens and Edwin Augustus Stevens have approached the Department with a plan to construct a high speed, low draft, screw propelled steamer for the Cutter Service, which if found satisfactory may become a model for further development. |
