Politics of the Kingdom of Serbia Head of State ![]() Petar I, King of Serbia (Royal House of Karađorđević) The King of Serbia is Serbia's head of state. The current monarch of Serbia is Petar I Karađorđević, who ascended to the throne following the assassination of late King Aleksandar Obrenović in 1903. Born in Belgrade as the grandson of Serbian hero Đorđe Petrović "Karađorđe", King Petar spent most of his life in exile in France, where he attended the prestigious military academy, the Saint-Cyr. Following his graduation, he fought in the Franco-Prussian War, being captured several times by Prussian forces and managing to escape each time. He left the war a highly-decorated hero and officer in the French Army. King Petar is considered to be a very liberal politician. King Petar was married to Princess Zorka of Montenegro, who died in 1890 in childbirth. The current heir to the throne is Crown Prince Đorđe, the eldest son of King Petar. Head of Government ![]() Jovan Avakumović, Head of the Council of Ministers (Liberal Party) The Head of the Council of Ministers is the Head of Government of the Kingdom of Serbia. The current Head of the Council of Ministers is Jovan Avakumović, one of the leaders of the Liberal Party, recognised as one of the finest criminal law experts in Serbia.
