12 April, 1912: Flugzeugbau Friedrichshafen has opened its doors and begun selling seaplanes. The FF.29 is the current model. Engineers at the company have indicated to the Naval Brass that the planes could be launched from submarines but little interest has been shown in allocating money for this as its utility is deemed insignificant. Nevertheless it has received modest grants in the budget and U-1, deemed largely obsolete at this point, is being modified to carry a seaplane.

Luft-Fahrzeug-Gesellschaft has opened, after it had received investments from AEG and Krupp, to a new factory for fixed wing aircraft in Adlerhof to compliment its zeppelin production. Siemens Schuckert has announced in 1913 it will also begin producing fixed wing aircraft at its plant in Berlin.

12 June, 1912: Berlin has approved funding to construct the Schluchsee Dam creating a large high altitude reservoir on the Schwarza River. Plans dictate a 64 meter high gravity dam will be chosen. A small railway extension will be constructed to access the dam which will create power and irrigation controls for the valleys below. Construction should be complete by the onset of 1915.

This proposal has received small local resistance about the natural environment and concerns of the usefulness of such large projects. The Edersee Dam in Hesse will now not be completed until late 1913 suffering unforeseen delays in construction. Many residents call hydroelectricity a wasteful means of mass spending.

September, 1912: The Prussian government has passed the Greater Berlin Act of 1912 which will effectively increase the city (and subsequent state) borders of Berlin nearly thirteen fold. Seven surrounding towns will be absorbed and multiple rural districts around the city to provide proper city planning, something Berlin will require with its recent population growth. This will come into effect on January 1, 1913 and give the city a population of around 3.5 million souls and putting it amongst the largest in Europe. Some of the rural areas are to be designated parks to preserve their status or made into urban parks after some extensive landscaping. The Imperial estates will also be surrendering their status as independent entities and becoming under the jurisdiction of Berlin. 20 boroughs will be created as subdivisions to manage the city.

October, 1912: Berlin has launched an aggressive program to install what German engineers have praised as the Belgian water purification system in German major cities. A budget of $175 million has been placed each year until 1915 to bring it to population centers across Germany beginning with the largest cities and working down. This will cover facilities to treat the water and additional piping. It is expected the local and state governments will supply the funding to reach smaller towns while the major cities can only be feasibly funded by the Imperial government.

Hamburg also sees the opening of the newest Ford Motors manufacturing plant to produce auto parts. Berlin hopes this will spark increased usage, lower the price of cars, and encourage better roadways to be built by the states.

With the British announcement of large scale efforts to expand shipbuilding and German Naval programs consuming much of the nation's drydocks at the expense of civilian ventures, Berlin has committed $500 million to expanding its shipbuilding to be complete in the same month of 1914. Most of the facilities will be located along the Elbe in Hamburg and slightly upriver from it. It is hoped this will relieve pressure on companies seeking to acquire additional merchant vessels. July, 1913: As the German Stock Exchange suffered one of its worst days following tensions in the Balkans and Morocco, the Kaiser forcibly closed it and the banks across Germany for a two day mandatory banking holiday. Some banks lost as much as 1/4 of their gold reserves and the nation was nearly pushed off the gold standard. Financial services reopened much more stable and it seems major long term damage to the German economy has been avoided. Rumors are freely flowing around financial centers that France was behind an economic undermining of Germany causing greater anger amongst conservatives.

10 July, 1913: The Reichstag has finally passed the Home Garden bill that the Kaiser wished to see in effect by the beginning of the year. Extensive regulations require home gardens in German homes and in the cities, certain rooftops, to grow vegetables or fruits. Legislators believe it could reduce the burden on agriculture and imports by 15% and make the country more food independent while promoting healthy diets. The bill will come into full effect for the spring of 1914 with minor requirements for preparation in 1913.

January 1, 1914: Berlin has begun efforts in earnest to secure credit to fund the war. In just three months the government spent over $3.5 Billion on combat operations leading to over $3.6 Billion in overspending for the year. The war is going to force many large scale planned projects to be shelved for lack of manpower and funds. Berlin has already extended its line of credit with German Banks and has launched a campaign to sell German war bonds in neutral countries, specifically Belgium, Sweden, Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United States. A bond drive is also underway at home. It is hoped that large German populaces in the American Midwest will generate the money required to fight the war.

January 10, 1914: With a rush on the completion, the Kiel Canal's makeover has been completed allowing even larger vessels to transit the canal. The workforce was quickly dispersed to fill up jobs opening as men are drafted into service. The Mitteland Canal is expected to also be fully opened by the end of the month after 14 years of grueling construction. Other more recent projects are as previously stated, to be put on hold.
