We are meeting here on the 7th of November, nineteen hundred and eighteen, to discuss the terms of a proposed Armistice between the German Empire and the Entente and its allies.

I, Matthias Erzberger, have been given leadership over the German delegation to these talks and am fully authorized to sign any agreement made in the absence of Kaiser Wilhelm II.

Armistice proposed by the German Empire is as follows:

1 termination of hostilities 6 hours after the signing of the treaty.

2 German forces will remove themselves from France, Belguim, and Luxembourg.

3 The Royal Navy will intern the German navy at bases on the British Isles until the conclusion of the treaty, the crews will remain in Germany.

4 The blockade of Germany will end.

5 Until the peace treaty is done the British Empire will be the preferential trading partner.

We accept these terms but however would request the US be added as a trading partner.

Would changing point 5 to the following be acceptable?

5. Until the peace treaty the British Empire and the United States of America will be the preferential trading partners of the German Empire.

We would also like to Clarify "France" in the treaty would include Alsace Lorraine.

We would like to clarify that Alsace Lorraine has been German since 1871 when we took it back from the French. Alsace and Lorraine were both members of the Holy Roman Empire and have spent more of their history as members of Germany than under the occupation of France.

We will be prepared to sign an agreement along these lines:

* Termination of military hostilities within six hours after signature.
* Immediate removal of all German troops from France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Alsace-Lorraine.
* Subsequent removal of all German troops from territory on the west side of the Rhine plus 30 km radius bridgeheads of the right side of the Rhine at the cities of Mainz, Koblenz, and Cologne with ensuing occupation by allied and US troops.
* Removal of all German troops at the eastern front to German territory as it was on August 1, 1914.
* Renouncement of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with Russia and of the Treaty of Bucharest with Romania.
* Internment of the German fleet in Britain.
* Surrender of materiel: 5,000 cannons, 25,000 machine guns, 3,000 minenwerfers, 1,700 airplanes, 5,000 locomotive engines, and 150,000 railcars.
* The blockade of Germany will end.
* Until the peace treaty is done the British Empire and United States will be the preferential trading partner.

Why has the US suddenly changed their stance to much harsher than they were going to agree on before?

Our delegation has received clearer instructions from Washington.

The US Government wishes to ensure a just, lasting, and honorable peace, however the above provisions are seen as key by the US Government to ensure there is indeed a peace.
