THE NATURE OF ANIMUS Animus is the bodies physical manifestation of the 'soul', the driving force that sustains our mortal shell and drives us ever onward. Without Animus the bodies bio-electrical network would collapse, nerves would cease to function, the brain would completely fall dormant and the bodies ability to repair itself would be completely lost. In fact the body would soon decay into nothing if bereft of Animus. Studies have shown that the recently discovered substance nicknamed "Rock" is somehow related to Animus; speculations have arisen that it is somehow a crystallized version of Animus that can survive outside of a living body, this reasoning is backed by the strange effect a human death has upon the substance when within close proximity. All living creatures, including most plants have a small reservoir of Animus within its system. For all but humans this reservoir is almost undetectable, there seems to be a connection between the amount of Animus in a body and the bodies ability to access their brains higher cognitive functions. Animus is a self replenishing resource that is used by the body on an instinctual level: the uses vary from various healing functions, adrenaline like boosts to the systems senses and hormonal balances. Normally the human body cannot consciously access these abilities, the first case of a being with actual control over there Animus was reported in early 1850. Eve: designation 0-0 was captured and studied. Seeming to be a normal female to the naked eye, upon closer inspection it was found the 0-0 was in fact almost 100 years of age. Not only was her age and healing capabilities amazing but her physical potential seems almost limitless. Observation teams sent alongside our finest agents (almost numbering 50 men in total) were reduced to 5 men in a sane and healthy manner in a matter of minutes. Reports indicate that the capture went successful before men started falling over bleeding from the eyes and ears, others began screaming as unseen horrors assailed them. In one mans fear he actually opened fire on subject 0-0 shooting her pointblank in the head with his rifle. The horrors seemed to abate until subject 0-0 regained her feet, reports indicate that there was no damage to her head at all. Seeing her as the monster she was the team fired upon her to varying degrees of success. As subject 0-0 began to run out of bodies to tear apart and consume her abilities became less frequent, her movements more labored until she was eventually overcome by her injuries. Quickly restraining her the surviving members brought subject 0-0 in for further analysis where we discovered the true properties of Animus. Eve is the template we now use on each candidate, her rapidly regenerating reservoir of Animus is unlike that of a normal humans and reacts strangely when transplanted to a foreign body. Only through heavy engineering did any of the first generation survive, we are still perfecting the process. We have made many breakthroughs but we fear that we have barely skimmed the surface of the pool... a pool that seems to resist each and every attempt we make to discover its depths. ANIMATORS The term coined for our test subjects. By implanting a large amount of Animus along with a large portion of Subject 0-0's genetic material the new hosts body accepts the new animus and begins converting its own reservoir to match that of the new more potent version. In essence all Animators are the same person, all the same as Eve; this has caused some speculation the Eve (although is stasis) can somehow affect the Animators into freeing her. Observation teams have been assigned to each candidate to ensure any behavior that suggests such can be immediately reported. Although unable to control Animus with such perfect precision as subject 0-0, many Animators can easily grasp basic manipulation and often instinctual learn more and more complex abilities. For this reason we strip them of all previous memory and release them into the "wild" with no recollection of the procedures or past, this is done to facilitate natural and instinctual development according to the candidates environment and base instincts. Animus abilities have been classified into 3 categories, note that these are very loose categories and that some abilities will not fit or may even fit into multiple. The three general categories are passive, offensive and defensive abilities, passive abilities are usually subconscious abilities like increased physical fitness or excessive Animus development. Defensive are usually abilities that are based on confusion, misdirection and protection such as boosting a systems immune system of sporadic mutations akin to scales etc. Offensive abilities of an Animus user seems to be effected by the persona of the Animator it has been witnessed 2 similar abilities manifest in more subtle or violent ways depending on mood and mentality. DEFENSIVE APPLICATIONS Animus serves an important roll in the human body, as stated previously without it the bodies auto responses to injury and infection would be far weaker if present at all. The flip side of this is that with the application of Animus it is possible to enhance this and other functions of the body, reports indicate that subject 1-5/7 lost an arm in a train accident... two days later a fully functional arm was in place of the severed stump. This healing ability is not limited to the Animator but can be used on another human to rapidly heal most injuries. (note- non Animator subjects display signs of increased agitation and uncomfortably during the healing process, this may have something to do with the foreign Animus invading the subjects system) As well as a powerful healing agent Animus can also be used as a stimulant to both the Animator and a willing subject. This use of Animus increases reaction times, physical speed, endurance, steadiness and strength. A more precise delivery is needed then for healing and usually causes a slight amount of damage to the subject (although not the Animator) giving further credence to the foreign Animus theory. OFFENSIVE APPLICATIONS Among the most frightening abilities displayed by Eve are the offensive abilities we see developing in the candidates, although usually in less potent manifestations. An Animator can synchronize the flow of Animus int heir body with that of someone within close proximity, often with varying effects. First generation candidates have manifested methods of "boiling" the Animus within a live victim causing horrendous damage, these victims are usually bypassed when harvesting any bodies left possibly due to there being no Animus left in the body. Other versions of syn-chronic manipulation have caused men to fall into an almost catatonic state where upon the Animator casually harvests from then and leaves, often leaving the victim alive and only somewhat injured. Other forms of this ability have left suggestions implanted in a target, to be carried out sometimes days later. One of the more unsettling abilities witnessed in some Animators is the ability of controlled mutation, seemingly an unoffensive ability but when used in conjunction with lightning fast speed and reflexes, and armored hide and foot long claws and Animator can become a brutal and efficient killing machine. |

HARVESTING ANIMUS Animus being of bodily origin must therefore be harvested from the body, specifaically the body of a human. Animus; as the essence of life is most often affected by a persons health and constitution, a strong healthy indiviadual will have more Animus then then a frail person. There are several factors that will influence the amount of harvest-able Animus available from a target, these mainly fall under physical, injury and illness. Physical factors are elements of endurance and toughness as well as age, the younger a person is the less Animus there is. As a person ages the more Animus produced within their system, although due to most elderly suffering from illness or injury this excess is usually burnt up countering the effects. Injuries will sap from a persons Animus pool, the closer a person is to death the less Animus will be available from them, also it should be noted that the more Animus harvested from someone the closer they get to dieing. It is quite possible to harvest Animus from a person and leave them feeling ill for a couple of days but otherwise unharmed Illness is perhaps the worst of the negative factors on Animus, the host already has to spend a portion of their Animus to combat the illness but there is also a 50% chance that any Animus harvested from an ill target will burn itself out fighting the contagion within, effectively wasting that portion of Animus if it isn't used within moments of harvesting. It is possible to harvest Animus from the bodies of the recently slain but the amount is minimal due to the rapid degradation following the loss of life. After a body ceases to function it loses a portion equal to 1 part of its remaining total at roughly 30 second intervals, although this may make it seem possible to harvest a larger portion from a large pool after a only a moment of death it is not the case as the degradation is a widespread effect; reducing the actual harvest-able amount to a minimum. To harvest Animus from a target the candidates have been outfitted with special equipment. As shown in the attached image a special suit is fitted just prior to the subjects release, more often then not the subject will modify their personal suit to better facilitate their needs but the standard design remains roughly the same. Mounted on the forearms is a small array of reinforced armor plating protecting the Animus conduits mounted directly into the arms of any Animators. Connected to the opposite end of these tubes is a snap lock, extend-able hypodermic syringe reinforced for combat use. Roughly just over a foot in length and an inch think at the arm mountings the point upon piercing the flesh of the target allows the Animator to rapidly synchronize their own Animus with that of their target and draw it out of the targets body and into their own. This process although sounding complex takes only moments and is usually over in a fraction of a second. |

DETRIMENTAL SIDE EFFECTS OF THE ANIMUS PROGRAM As stated previously Animus is the essence of life and as such cannot be held in anything but a living host. Due to this, the most identifiable is the effect that foreign Animus has ponce it has entered the body of an Animator. A glowing filigree begins to from up the arm, across the chest and along the neck into the base of the skull; following the veins of the Animator the new Animus flows throughout the body beings converted into a form closer resembling the more 'perfect' version implanted directly from subject 0-0. The more Animus present in the system the further this glowing spreads around the body and the brighter it becomes, even with the jumpsuit covering most of the effected areas high concentrations of Animus will shine through the suit. Reported often is under high stress or excessive and rapid use of Animus leads to the same glowing effect. (note- We are still unclear on why the Animus glows... we can speculate that it is the conversion of the Animus that creates the effect but to so rapidly begin glowing puts our estimates of the process out. Strangely enough Animus in its original host has no glowing properties at all.) Perhaps one of the most illogical side effects witnessed in some Animators is the slow atrophy of muscle strength. About 40% of early test subjects and even the first generation of Animator candidates suffered from this condition. Since Animus promotes the growth and strengthening of the body we are unsure as to why atrophy sets in. (experimentation is going into the possibility of an allergic reaction of some kind) The atrophy of the body is the main reason for a lot of the suits reinforcement, ranging from metal bracing to compression weaves and restraining straps. The suit itself has gone through extensive research and testing during the earlier stages of the program and has reached the pinnacle of easily self repairable equipment we can provide to the candidates. (note- Eve, classification 0-0 has an extensive suit built around her for two reasons. 1- to siphon off the excess Animus her body produces and 2 - to keep her restrained in stasis. she has no need for a candidates suit as her body seems to be in perfect balance and has displayed physical adaptation to her environment) Further research is going into the link between body growth and Animus, by harnessing the abilities displayed by subject 0-0 a suit would not be needed at all... in fact a harvesting rig would likely be redundant due to the fact that the Animator would be able to regrow any part of their body in any fashion they chose removing the need for anything so artificial as armor and reinforcements. Still with the increased Animus only a mere 25% of test subjects and candidates have actually shown any increase in physical growth. Only 2% of subjects (a single Animator, subject 1-2/7) has actually shown the ability to manipulate their bodies on a large scale at will, unfortunately the subject escaped shortly after displaying an explosive fit of mutation that left him looking like a monster of myth before being classified as MIA, so we have been unable to study what made them manifest this ability. Still extensive research and experimentation goes into the subjects that are unfit for release, I feel we are getting closer to a breakthrough in mutability that is actually beneficial to the subject instead of proving fatal or monstrous. Some observation teams have reported cases of minor mutations among both generations that seem benign at least and beneficial in some cases. These mutations range from elongated teeth, claws, chameleon like abilities, slight mutability (note- not a conscious change, usually adapting aspects of latest harvest), and in the event of subject 1-5/7 the autopsy indicated extra or highly developed organs. The third generation should see more promising results based on what knowledge we have recovered from field observations and subject 1-5/7s body. (note- although slight it is a vast improvement) More serious concern has gone into combating malign mutations and promoting conscious mutability in the third generation, although this has pushed their expected release date over the horizon at least we have greatly improved their stability over the earlier generations. Among the first generation and associating test subjects most suffered from an Animus dependency. Driving them to more and more harvesting to constantly add to their Animus reservoir, some cases they would physically damage themselves by absorbing to much Animus without using it. After the first generation was released and the reports came through we worked long and hard to fins the cause of these 'hungers' we believe we have isolated and removed the problems and as yet none of the second generation has shown excessive symptoms, although some early cases have been reported it a bare fraction of the cases suffered by the first generation. Along with the above mentioned physical problems associated with the Animators there have been many cases (70% of first generation candidates) that have developed progressive mental conditions. One of the main factors that cause these conditions is most likely heavily influenced by the memory erasure and possibly some minor metal changes forced upon them by subject 0-0s Animus. We have increased the amount of mental conditioning imposed upon the second generation but even so early in their release we can estimate perhaps 50% of them will develop a mental condition within the year if not already. Cases tend to vary from individual, ongoing and recurring amnesia is a common condition, serious multiple personality disorders and in some cases complete insanity have been recorded. Witnessed in the first generation candidates the greater an Animators grasp over their Animus the higher the risk of them falling further from the border of sanity. |

EVE AND THE FIRST GENERATION Eve, the first, designation 0-0. She was the beginning, the first recorded being with the ability to manipulate Animus. From her genetic material and seemingly endless reservoir of Animus we began developing a method of copying her abilities and basic genetic structure to specific candidates. The first successful generation were still mere manufactured copies and hardly capable of attaining the power displayed by their progenitor. The fact that they did attain a portion of subject 0-0s power is most likely the cause of so many of the physical and mental problems that arise within the Animator candidates. Subject 0-0 is not human, and as such compatibility with humans, a far crude and unrefined version of herself leaves large gaps in the two genetic structures resulting in unstable connections and degraded connections. The first 32 subject were failures, the first few dying within seconds of the first infusion. Gradually we began doing something right and the test subjects began living longer, began manifesting some of subject 0-0s abilities. Usually it was the manifestation of these abilities that killed the subjects, either destroying themselves or burning their systems out attempting to harness powers beyond their abilities. Some subjects would reach to deep and draw upon their "core" Animus, the original animus within their systems before the procedures infused them with 0-0s genetic code. These subjects tended to either become deathly ill and would soon die without medical attention or collapse into a pile of degraded flesh and bones. Seeing the problem that arose when an Animator was stretched to their limits we installed a genetic safeguard that severed the connection needed to control Animus whenever a candidate attempted to access their core Animus. After much research, time, money, lives lost and insights gained we finally produced the first generation of surviving Animators. Seven survived the process, the pinnacle of our research, the light at the end of the tunnel we had so long been lost in. With these seven beings greater then man we would lead human kind into a better future, but then the problems started arising. Feeling foolish over our preemptive celebration we set about studying the first generation, classifying each and naming them after the seven virtues of heaven... For with our seven creations we will undo the sins of man. Many problems arose during the five years of observation we collected as much data as we could without disturbing our subjects, eventually at the end of the 5 years all seven Animators were lost to us. One by one they had fallen to violence or had managed to escape our network and disappear. Although no live specimens were recovered from the original seven we were able to recover the bodies of subjects 2-3/7, 2-5/7 and 2-6/7. THE SECOND GENERATION Although taking something close to 15 years to develop the second generation is still considered to be "experimental", although using pure samples from subject 0-0 there has been a significant amount of genetic material from subject 1-5/7 implanted along side it in the hopes that the partially mutated strain of hybrid DNA will help smooth the transformation process. Since reports from the first generation have shown us a larger amount of physical and mental strain on the candidates we have increased conditioning in both aspects to the best of our new found abilities, hopefully with the pure strain and the hybrid working together the conditioning will hold them together long enough for them to properly mature and perhaps we can recover some live samples. Using a similar template to the first generation we have incorporated much more of subject 0-0s potential, this may make all the conditioning redundant but even so if the subjects result in failure there is still the possibility of unlocking a greater scope of abilities to implement into the third generation. With all the precautions we have taken there were still 22 fatalities prior to the release of the second generation, shortly after the release 3 subjects were deemed unfit and recovered. These individuals will be sent to the lab for physical and medical experimentation, even in their failure they will serve our purpose. In total there were 17 candidates that survived the initial release (including the three later recovered). These candidates were dubbed the "angels" they would either be harbingers calling down the wrath of God, or they will lead us ever closer to heaven and eternal salvation for all mankind. (note- after the failures of our ill prepared observation teams we have evaluated and implemented a few of the minor enhancements we have unlocked, this along with superior equipment and training should allow our teams to follow any candidate through hell itself and still provide accurate reports) |
