The office of Mercutio Andrés Kittier, Esq. It is spartan in terms of design and overcrowded in terms of mess, but it is not filthy. Inks and pens lie everywhere, and the floor is covered in manuscripts, letters, and journals. In the center of the sea of paper is a fine mahogany desk that bears nearly too many drawers, nooks, and crannies to count. What piques your interest the most, however, is the two pieces of paper before you. One copy seems to be stained with a mysterious clear liquid. ![]() You sigh and turn to leave, wondering where the body is. As you start to exit, something slips to the ground in front of you. ![]() Edited by Mercutio Andrés Kittier, Feb 20 2010, 02:16 AM.

Whatever Remains is an interactive forum-based free form role-playing game based off of victorian detective novel theory and murder mystery games. Each player will assume the role of a character within the game and role-play to the best of their ability as that character. The game is based around posting, conversing with other characters, examining the atmosphere and settings around you, and venturing through the storyline. DISCLAIMER: This is a free-form online setting with a relatively large (8, at the time of this posting) count of players. I have never GMed before and I have never tried this system before, so consider yourself working in Beta. I reserve all rights to change rules within reason as I see fit. Being a roleplaying game, there are no set teams or set "winners" - the goal is to advance through the storyline and figure out the mystery. Table of Contents 1. How to Roleplay, How to Play, Registering Actions 2. Inventory, The Post, Private Messaging 3. Character Sheets and Creation 4. The Story, Final Words How to Roleplay: The most important component of this game is roleplaying. Each player will have a character with certian traits, strengths, and weaknesses that wil be PMed (personal messaged) to them at the start of the game. This character can be designed by me, entirely customized by you, or anywhere in between. Get in contact with me about what kind of character you'd like to play. See the post on character design below for more details. This character is going to essentially be you in this game. All of your forum posts must be in character and must be written as if you were the character. Any OOC (out of character) posts should be denoted by double parenthesis around whatever statement is out of character. We ask that you refrain as much as possible from speaking out of character and when possible, send any out of character comments or inquiries to me or other players in a medium outside of the forum. (e-mail, IM, etc.) Please try to use decent English and spelling in your posts in order to keep the atmosphere. (No chatspeak or emoticons, please.) We won't shank you over a grammatical error or a misspelling, but please try your best to write as if you were actually writing something important! You are also allowed to get as detailed as you'd like with your posts and roleplay with in each post as much as you would like. Examples: What to do:
What NOT to do:
How to Play: Every character will start out in a different area. A different forum represents each area, and characters will post in the area that they are currently in. They are allowed to interact with anything else in that forum, which includes any NPCs on the scene, examining anything in the setting, doing any activities available in that setting, and talking to any other players also in the forum. Registered Actions Registered actions will be the basis behind what your character does. Every 48 hours, your character will register something they want to do by posting it in bold . These types of actions can be, but are not limited to, examinations, asking or saying something to an NPC, doing something with the setting. For example:
I will log on at the end of each 48 hour phase and give the results of whatever action you performed - the response of the NPC, the results of what you look at, etc. I understand that this will make the game go really, really really slow, however it's the best way to run things online. This way, it is impossible for certian members who can sign on and post more often than others to rush the plot ahead, leaving other busier players in the dust. The plot will pretty much advance every 48 hours, this way. (Note: If all players agree, I am open to changing the amount of time between each change.) You may talk to other players in real time if they are in your forum and simply carry on a back and forward conversation and discussion with them without having to register with me anything. A simple rule for knowing what you have to do as your registered action as opposed to what your character can just freely do is this: If your action is going to affect any NPCs (characters who are played by me and are not one of the player characters) or involves changing or getting details from your surroundings, register it. If it is related to your character or other player characters in the area, feel free to post it in real time and carry on a conversation while waiting for the results of your registered action. You may CHANGE any of your actions before the 48 hours is up. If you decide you no longer want to do something, please mention your original action in ((double parenthesis)) in the new action post. Ex:
^ This example would register that you wanted to investigate the desk as opposed to the body, and as such I would return the results of that investigation. A note for experienced role playing gamers (feel free to ignore if you are a complete novice) Dice and other measures of success will not generally be in play for each action - you won't have to roll to see how well your investigation does, nor will I roll. There will be a few circumstances where dice and coinflips will be involved in certian actions, but these are character specific and will be detailed in your character sheet if they are applicable. Movement You may only post in the forum of the location you are in. (for example, if you are in the Library, you cannot go post or interact with anything at Scotland Yard.) However, you may register movement as an action. You may move to a location previously on the board, or to any location you discover or can think of. NOT ALL LOCATIONS WILL BE VISIBLE AT THE START OF THE GAME. To move, simply bold and roleplay it:
Your result will be that you have moved to the Library, and therefore must post in the Library forum. You may READ any forum that is open and accessible, to follow up with what is going on with other characters. You simply cannot post or interact with any character outside of your forum. A NOTE FOR FORUM NOOBS: In order to Bold your action, just put
or highlight your action after you have typed it and hit the B button at the type of the page. Edited by Mercutio Andrés Kittier, Feb 22 2010, 09:54 PM.

Inventory System Being a murder mystery game, your character will want to keep an inventory of evidence and other useful things. You will find stuff you will want to take, and you can also share your findings with other players. That said, there's a difference between knowing of an item and actually having it in your posession. If you want to take an object you find, you must register it as an action. This is annoying, I know, but some objects cannot be taken/have consequences for being taken. If you want to give an object to another player in the room, you may simply give them the object and not register the action. I simply ask that you bold give so I can keep track of what players have what objects. But this will not count as your registered action for the phase. Using any item on your environment or NPCs (use match to light candle, use antique lamp to beat man over the head) should be registered as an action. A final word on registered actions There are some actions that you can do to others that I may have to interject and ask you to register. I hold the right to interject at any moment in the game and request that an action must be registered. Please bear with me as I work this system out. The Post Each of your characters has a special post box! You can go check your mail at any point in the game unless otherwise specified. Simply send a personal message to Mercutio Andrés Kittier requesting your mail for the day. The Post is open on every day except for Sunday and other holidays that will be specified. This will not count as your registered action and you will be messaged back the contents of your mailbox the first chance I get. Who knows what you'll get in the mail? Perhaps you'll get interesting information or an important clue, or random Victorian spam mail I choose to send you! Or you'll get nothing. You'll just have to check and find out! If you would like to mail a letter to any other player, just send the message and the recipent to Mercutio Andrés Kittier. This will come in handy if you want to contact someone not in your immediate location. If you would like to mail an object in your posession to any other player, just send me a message. The recipent will recieve the message the next phase when they check their mail. You will NOT be notified about what mail you recieve, so remember to check your boxes! You don't have to check every day, but it's probably a good idea to check your mail every few days. You may show or give anything you recieve in the mail directly in the thread. A word on Private Messaging You can also just plain send a private message to someone you are in a location with if you want to discuss something in private. I am leaving you guys on your honor to not personal message someone not in your immediate area. I can't stop you, of course, but it'll kind of ruin the idea of the game. If you are not in a close location, please move or send a letter. |

Character Creation Characters are the root of what you'll be roleplaying. Each member will be messaged a Character Sheet containing the details of your character. It will look something like this:
Anything not listed is entirely up to you. This information will not be made public - you can share as much or as little as you want about your character to the other players. You can also make stuff up, but be warned - all of your action results will be based on this sheet. You may contribute as much as you'd like to this creation - get in touch with me. A lot of things will be based off of World of Darkness, if anyone knows what that means. Not all talents, weaknesses, and other things will always be immedietly visible... While roleplaying, the fun comes from keeping in character! A note on death Death. It's possible. You can die at any minute. You CAN be revived, but you will have to pay a price. This is on a case by case basis, but will most likely be in the form of surrendering a talent. But we'll see. Point is, try not to die. Or at least be aware of your own mortality. Not all of those detective novels have a happy ending. |

The Story This is a Victorian detective roleplay centric around murder mysteries and fictional detectives. There are few elements of magic or the supernatural in play and everything is more or less realistic, literarily speaking. There are a few steampunk elements, but the game itself is not steampunk. The Grand Game is in play. I will admit that, because of an idea I had, it is considerably moreso than I originally expected it to be. However, a player does not need to know anything about Sherlock Holmes or anything surrounding it in order to play this game. A cursory knowledge of the stories may serve interesting, but absolutely all puzzles and mysteries are solveable with zero prior knowledge to the series. Anything you need to know, you can find out in the game. I have made it assuming that absolutely every player is completely alien to every aspect of the canon. Having prior knowledge will give you a minimal, if any, advantage in this game. Final Words So if you haven't guessed, I'm really bad at explaining things. This is the kind of thing where it's easier to just dive into it than try to explain. If you have any questions, let me know - there's only really one player who isn't a novice, so we're all new to this. Said player will also be helpful with helping others For those on the fence of whether or not to play, it'd be really great if you did! It should be fun and low key - for those of you familiar with CRMafia, it won't be nearly as stressful. There are no teams and there is really no winning and losing - there is just story. I've tried to make it move slowly enough so even people who can't devote more than an hour or so every few days can keep up. But if you choose to simply watch, that's perfectly fine as well. If you do have to drop mid-game, that's perfectly fine - just keep in mind your character will get killed off. Once the game starts, I will make accounts based off of your characters. Please do not sign up for the forum yourself! I will send you the password and name to log in as. If you have any questions or comments, email or IM me or post here as a guest. If you have decided to play, please sign as a guest that you have read the rules and agree to the game. |
