January 2009 - Important Votes On Re-appointments
Topic Started: Nov 22 2008, 07:17 PM (275 Views)

The first trustee meeting in January 2009 is the organizational meeting when the trustees vote for Chair - Vice Chair - committee appointments and most important, the re-appointment (or non) of Zoning and BZA committee members whose terms expire at the end of 2008. This is when the trustees show their core intentions and the extent to which they will vote to block or retain certain appointments.

One BZA member's term expires at the end of 2008. Ron Oiler, one of the most decent, non-judgmental and unbiased members on either board, will find out his fate at the Jan. 2009 organizational meeting. Mr. Oiler has attended almost all, if not all, of the Trustee and Zoning meetings. He has taken hours of additional educational seminars related to zoning and functions of township governing. He has also requested to be allowed to cross-train on the Zoning Commission board. However, when there was an opening on the ZC earlier this year, Mr. Oiler was denied his request. This was odd because there were 3 newly appointed Zoning Commission members and Mr. Oiler's experience would have been extremely helpful to a 'new' board. No good answer was provided by either Sims or Likley (Kratzer wanted Oiler to move to the ZC) to explain why they didn't want Mr. Oiler's experience on such a new board.

Cross-training is an important part of any business structure. Management is encouraged to have employees be diversified in their skills to allow for reassignment when need arises. Our next trustees may very well come from this pool of employees and the better trained they are the better prepared they will be for a trustee position.

There should be an action plan in place among the trustees that will promote the cross-training of all zoning members. Will this happen for Ron Oiler? Will he be retained for another term? We'll have to wait and see. It would benefit all of us to attend the organizational meeting in 2009 to watch what happens and voice our concerns if decisions are made that make no sense or have no reasoning. We need to closely monitor the activities of our trustees to make sure the township's best interests are being considered and not the interests of the trustees.

Honestly, if Ron Oiler is not re-appointed, this will just be yet another strike against Sims (and Likley). There shouldn't be one single reason as to why he shouldn't stay! BUT, since Sims is one of the Trustees who will be up for re-election in 2009, I certainly hope that the community sees just how she operates and what she's really all about and decide NOT TO RE-ELECT HER!!!!!
