Background on RAK In the fall of 2006, an assembly was held at WHS. Members of the family of Rachel Scott were here to share her story. Rachel was the first student killed at Columbine, and her family has chosen to carry on her legacy. Rachel was a passionate, service-minded leader who yearned to bring kindness and goodness to her school. She sought out students who might be left out, who are picked on, who are new. She strove to carry that service wherever she went. Her family challenged our school to do the same. The basic tenets of Rachel's Challenge are: • Look for the best in others - and eliminate prejudice. • Dare to Dream - write goals and keep a journal. • Choose Positive Influence - remember input determines output. • Acts of Kindness = Huge Results • Start a chain reaction - with friends and family. Many students signed on in agreement with these beliefs after the emotionally charged assembly. Soon thereafter, Student Body Vice President Joel Anderson and Dr. Ratigan sought an advisor to create a group of students who would serve as ambassadors to new students. That fall, RAK was formed. RAK stands for Rachel's Ambassador Klub and also Random Acts of Kindness (hence the use of the K) and is open to all students. At the first few meetings, students decided that the group should extend itself beyond just assisting with new students, but also beyond the walls of the school. They also decided the group shouldn't have officers, but should instead hold each other accountable to living as service-minded leaders. Finally, the group committed itself to carrying on Rachel's legacy. A group of about 15 students maintained the group that first year. The group has grown significantly, but the use of small groups has helped keep students active. What does RAK do? • RAK holds true to those basic ideas shared at the first few meetings. • RAK focuses on ensuring that the activities in which we participate are student initiated and student led. • RAK members are identified to assist new students in our school - and match up with students by grade, gender, and Dean. • RAK members assist with new student/sophomore orientation. • RAK members participate in a great deal of service opportunities throughout the year, and continue to look for new opportunities. |
