Natalie was filthy and sweaty. Her lungs burned from overuse and every muscle in her body ached, but she kept pressing forward; she kept fighting. It'd been a successful night, as the plowed through the unsuspecting Drownae camp. The threatened town was saved as well, another victory for Regalaus. Unfortunately for this company, it didn't take the Drownae to bring in reinforcements. They'd been battling since the break of dawn, both sides trying desperately to secure another win. So far, Regalaus, with the help of the Amazons, seemed the strongest; but Natalie wasn't getting her hopes up just yet. She'd seen too much to be optimistic. |

Michael was a powerful tower in the battlefield only a few feet away. Though he lacked any finesse to his fighting style, powerful jabs with his blade felled Drownae after Drownae. He deflected blows with his shield, occasionally even bashing the foe with it. |

Natalie sliced through one Drownae after another. Luckily exhaustion blurred their faces. She didn't have to see anything but merely felt the impact on her sword. It was easier this way. Being detached. It made the war a lot more tolerable, at least while she was in the thick of it. Somewhere amidst this nightmarish haze, she heard a shout: “It's her! It's the Queen!” Natalie looked up to see the banners of Her Majesty. Queen Cassandra was mounted atop the hill above them, the royal guard behind her and at her flanks. |

Michael slammed his shield into the ground, a humongous rattle of the earth summoned that blew back a score of warriors. "M'Lady, with me!" Michael roared as he moved back into the crowd of Regaulan milita, shouting encouragement to his warriors. |

Natalie backed up until she was beside Michael. She watched as the Queen her descent down the hill, her riders at her sides. Even the Drownae soldiers paused to watch, horror in their eyes. They knew that they were dreadfully outnumbered now. |

After a few minutes of hurrying through the battle, they reached the honor guard of the Queen. "Marm," Michael said, kneeling before her. |

"Rise, Sir Michael," Cassie ordered. Her voice was dead, devoid of all emotion. |

And Michael did so. "The battle goes well, Majesty." He said. "We expect a full route by this evening." |

She nodded. "Excellent. Who is in charge of the Amazons?" |

"Um...Warlady Aria. She's with the archers, currently." He stated. |

"Bring her to me," she said cooly. |

"Aye, marm." He said, and left. About fifteen minutes later, he returned with the Warlady, a tall woman with flowing red hair. |

Cassie had climbed down from her horse was and was standing at full height before the warlady. Her father's sword gleamed at her side. "Warlady Aria," she said; not a hint of friendliness could be found in that greeting. |

"Queen Cassandra," She nodded curtly. "How may I assist?" |

"I would like you deliver a message for me..." In a flash, the queen unsheathed her sword. She drove it through Aria's ribcage, instructing, “Have your body sent back to your Empress. The alliance is dead.” |

"Your Majesty!" Michael protested. This was not going to turn out well. He could not say any more, though, lest he speak treason. |

Cassie pulled her sword out of the impaled Amazon. The long blade was painted red with her blood. To those Amazons who were nearby, who were watching in horror as their warlady was slaughtered, Cassie offered this simple message: "This is what it looks like; I am declaring war on your empress. You can either face me now or run back to her with your sad stories. Either way is fine because I plan to shed your blood eventually." |

And so the Amazons decided to flee. They broke off from the battle, retreating in an organized manner from the field. This was not as bad of a loss as Michael had expected, but the loss of troops was still damaging to the Regaulan's war effort. |

Natalie was taken aback by what she had seen. When she got a chance, she confronted her. "My Lady, why--" |

"My husband is dead," Cassie explained in the same chilly tone. "I cannot feel him any longer." |

"Your Majesty..." Michael sighed. He didn't know how to reply to that. |

"Oh, Cassandra..." Natalie drew the young woman into her arms, temporarily forgetting that she was embracing the queen. |

Cassandra made no attempt to return the hug. Her body was ridged; her eyes stared blankly into nothingness. "I knew better than to trust Amazons," she muttered, disdain in her tone. |

Natalie nodded. "Yes. You are not well, sweetheart. You just lost your husband." More than anyone, she knew how that felt. |
