Guide: How to Change your IP

Version - 1.0

Introduction & Changelog

Introduction

Note: I've originally made this guide for the use of all CE members, however after having pondered on it for about 2 hours, I've decided it'd be better to keep it to ourselves (the CE Leadership).

As we are starting to step into the Wilderness for PVP Wars more often, we are however unfortunate much more likely to run into certain problems.
For some incredibly retarded reason, people enjoy DoSing (commonly mistaken for and called DDoS...) for their own gain (during PKing, for example) or to just get on your nerves.

In this guide I will not go into any kind of details regard DoSing or DDoSing, just kow that there is a HUGE difference between them and that you're better of not knowing it.
On the contrary, this guide will easily show how to change your IP to prevent outsiders from DoSing you.

Note: I made this guide on my own laptop, so all the images are in Dutch, I will put translations of important words and terms in descriptions below the pictures.

Changelog

Copyright/Disclaimer

This guide is ment only for CE, do not share anything in this guide with non-CE members.
Despite the fact that anyone can quite easily find this through simple Google searches, I'd rather not make certain kinds of information easier to find.

I've made this guide as I can guarantee that sooner or later, we WILL need it for the protection of our members.

Once again, keep this to yourself, learn from it and help members through the process if there's a need to.
Be careful not to share your own delicate details while doing so.

Step by step

1. To start of, go to your taskbar and look for the icon depicting your Internet Connection.
2. Right-click and select the lower option "Open Network Center"

Note: This might also be called "Network and Sharing Center" or "Network and Internet"

3. In the Network Center, look in the left panel and select "Manage Network Connections".
4. Take a note here that on this tab, you will be shown the different Network Devices you have access to, people on a laptop will have to use the "wireless" one, obviously.

5. As in the picture, right-click the proper Network Device and hit properties, this will open the following menu:

6. This is a very important menu, you have to make it absolutely sure that you select the "TCP/IPv4" option!
7. After selecting the TCP/IPv4 toption, hit the Properties Button (with the red line around it in the picture above), this action will open up another menu:

8. This menu is where the magic happens! At the top, per default you will hve the box ticked that says "Obtain an IP Adress Automaticly".
9. Instead of obtaining an IP Adress automaticly, we want to set one for ourselves. To do that, tick the second option "Use the following IP Adress".
10. Having done that you will now be able to fill in the blank fields, leave these menu's open for now.
11. Before you can continue, you will first have to know the number of your Router.
12. You can find this number in 4 ways, of which only 2 are convenient.

  1. Look on the back and/or side of your Router box, the number should be on there.
  2. Use the Command Panel (cmd.exe); go to: Start -> Search "cmd" -> select "cmd.exe"

Further information on using the Command Panel for this

13. Now you can head back the TCP/IPv4 Properties menu.
14. Insert the Router Numbers/Default Gateway Numbers in their destined spot (the third field!).
15. Next, you can basicly copy the numbers you used as your Router Numbers/Default Gateway Numbers and paste them in the field for the "IP-Adress".

Note: The only thing that should be different in the IP-Adress field, as oposed to the "Default Gateway" field, are the last numbers you enter.

16. The number(s) at the end can be whatever you desire, so long as noone else uses it.
17. Now hit your 'Tab' key, this action will result in the automatic filling up of the "Subnetmask" fields.

Typicaly it should look like this for everyone

IP-Adress: 192 . 168 . 1 . XX
Subnetmask: 255 . 255 . 255 . 0
Default Gateway: 192 . 168 . 1 . XXX

Note: Here, XX is dependant on your Router and your desired IP.
It's possible to have any variation in order between 255 and 0 on the Subnetmask Fields.

18. Now, you're almost there; At this point, make sure to fill in your "Preffered DNS Server", preferably use the same numbers as you used for the "Default Gateway" fields.
19. All that's left to be done is click the 'OK' button followed by,
20. Closing the Network Device Properties

I hope this guide will help you and in it's effect, the members of CE.
