How to make rain effect

So after talking with Hugo I try to explain how I’ve done the rain effect on my BMW entry for round 14 on autemo.

First off all you need all tools of trade to make the effect:

- Rain brush: http://www.deviantart.com/download/15251819/spiritsighs_rain.abr
This will be uset at first for making the rain effect

- msMaiden Water drops brush set: http://www.deviantart.com/download/122462592/water_drops_brushes_by_msMaiden.rar
This is the second step brush set you need to make water drops on car’s body

- Splish Splash brush set: http://www.deviantart.com/download/39339524/Splish_Splash.zip
This is an awesome set that you use only at the end of the work… I’ll explaint in the PART 2

STEP 1
Let’s start, I use a base of one of my next project (a Lotus Elan).
Using the rain brush you prefer make rain, there’s not required to set the level opacity, just do it.

STEP 2
Using water drops brush set start making drops on the same level with different kind of brush. Brush are really bigger so set them on the size you need (I’ve used an 87px size). There can be some care areas with highlights and drops can’t be seen. Just make darker the drops in this area with the burn tool (try to set at 15%, and use it more time if needed).

STEP 3
Time to make car outline drops, using a little smaller size of drop brush set, follow the car outline (I’ve used 55px size)

Here we are again to continue the tut for making the rain effect.

STEP 4
Now it’s time, a salso ATC remember me in his comment, to make visibies drops on the shiny car parts. Just pick up the burn tool, set it to “Lights” with 50% exposure and use it on the drops layer over the shiny car parts. Be carefull, everytime you click with the burn tool, you increase the dark on drops: personally I use it keeping pressed the mouse button in order to have an homogeneous result.

STEP 5
Got to see what to do if the windscreen wiper is working. Personally I use the pen tool and path cause it’s more accurated than the lasso tool and reduce a lot possibile aliasing problems. So create a new path and trace the imaginary area cleaned by the windscreen wiper and select it, then duplicate it (I’ll explaint soon why you’have to do that) and come back to the drops level and select again the path and delete the selection from the drops level.

At this poin we have the cleaned area but, as you know windscreen wiper don’t clean perfectly… so that’s why I’ve duplicated the selection of drops on the windscreen. Just go to that level and using the smunge tool with 25% intensity apply on that following the curve that you’ve traced.

STEP 6
Now we start adding the rain removed by the windscreen wiper around the cleaned area.
Make a new layer with 40% opacity and with a white brush (size 3px) start following the line. You’ve not to be accurated. When you’ve finished apply a bevel/emboss layer style with these settings:

Inner bevel
Depth 61%
Dimension 2px
Attenuation 0px

Using this level you can also make some rain that flows on the car’s body.

STEP 7
For tha you’ve to say tnx to Asoraes. Make a new layer with opacità 20% (that’s depends from the overall luminosity of your chop, just set it in order to have the most realistic result) my and with a 1px white brush start making little drops on the cleaned area of the windscreen (like “fresh” rain over it).
