To make clickable links you need to include http://, or at least you do for hyperlinks (the hyperlink button adds that anyway). |

Hello! I had an attempt at photographing smoke today. It didn't work. But heres what I did do anyway. I found the lid of an old scanner, and sprayed it flat black (and used the white inner bit for later, could make a good reflector). Screwed it to a bit of MDF, and placed a raised block in front of it. Raised block has a hole in the top for a match to sit in. Either side of that was two sewing needles for conductivity, at the base, squeezed between a needle and the match stick was the wire for current. Around the top of the matchhead was a bit of nichrome wire. This gets very hot when you pass current through it, so perfect for electronically lighting matches (and cigarettes :P) Set up looks like this. But imagine it drawn better. ![]() As I mentioned, I failed a bit. One pic of smoke: ![]() One pic of just the moment before ignition: ![]() Things to do for next time: Make better and more reliable ignition rig. Easier to change spent matches. More light = faster shutter. Also more continous pics so can get more shots of ignition. This whole thing was a bit half arsed so I'll be putting it together better next time XD |

What was your lighting setup? Been tempted to give some smoke shots a go recently, got a couple ideas that I might try out tomorrow. |

The flashgun from the other thread, was darkish out though so gonna try it during daylight when theres more light through the windows and I can get some big lighting in there for faster shutters. |

I'm going to try it in a pitch black room so there's no ambient light. I'll probably bounce the flash off the background instead of trying to light up the smoke directly. A dark room will also mean I can use slower shutter speeds, will probably just bulb it and use the aperture to control the exposure. The flash is so brief, up to around 1/1000 of a second that no matter how short your shutter speed is it won't make any difference except controlling the exposure of objects from ambient light, of course a pitch black room won't have any. |
