"What? You mean Japan isn't made of cute schoolgirls and tentacle monsters? Aww, I guess half of everything I know about the place is a lie, then"
Dougal shrugged, offering a playful smile as his only apology, allowing the topic to fade as quickly as it came into being.
An elbow to the ribs can easily accomplish that.

"Besides, weird is potential fun, normal assured boredom; given the choice, I'd take my chances."
His smile only grew wider as Hideaki decorated the girl's pigtail with a floaty, in a silent 'See? I told you. Weird, but entertaining' confirmation of his words.

"So.." He idly turned towards Hideaki, who had scampered off, looking for their beach ball. His gaze stopped on the lighthouse for a moment, making the pause between his words just a second too long as he thought about the place and the strong reactions it appeared to easily cause.
Why was it that he was unable to look at it without a gut-wrenching feeling? Viral paranoia, probably. "..nothing. Never let it be said that I'm against fun, bring on the ball!"

Nalani stared at the other two boys, waiting for her brother to get back. She felt very awkward. Slowly lifting her hand up, she plucked the floaty off and then held it with both hands in front of her. She took turns squeezing it to help with her anxiety.

Clarent's explanation hadn't help. It was an underserved compliment. Experience told her that he wanted something from her, but she couldn't fathom what. Someone would have told him that I miss a lot of school, if anything at all. Rumors... Nalani didn't like rumors.

On the other hand, there was Dougal boosting of weird being fun. He probably would have more fun with Hideaki. Nalani had her weird moments, but it was the boring kind.

Hideaki had found their ball and was trying to blow it up with mouth further back on the beach. He was planning on spiking it into the back of one of the boys' heads, so he was attempting to be stealthy on his slow approach back. 'Siides, it was so rare that Nalani had friends to hang out with and thought to give them some time.

"I like pottery," Nalani said, looking down. It was her attempt at covering up the silence as they waited. She felt stupidly awkward saying it though.
