My enthusiasm for Toonami is deteriorating.; I have some issues with the lineup.

Sam I am.
I was watching some of the recorded bullshit from Toonami I had from the past few Saturdays (I'm usually not home when it comes on, which is a problem I really need to rectify) and I was thinking about watching the two episodes of Casshern I had recorded. I spent a minute thinking about it before I deleted the episode from two weeks ago. Now I'm starting to have some issues with the lineup, even though I previously had problems with it.

Let's start with Bleach. Bleach is shit. Moving on.

Deadman Wonderland was a really interesting show to have starting out. I was surprised to find that it wasn't like other shonen series. It held my attention despite the terrible voice acting on Ganta's part and gave me all the blood and fucks I wanted. I just checked his voice in Japanese and I find it's infinitely more suitable than the English VA that sounds like some whiny bitch. That was my only gripe with the show. Everything else was interesting and fun. I'm disappointed to see it go.

Casshern Sins was something I was incredibly enthusiastic about at first. Then I saw a few episodes. Then I watched a few MORE episodes. It's so FUCKING BORING. Whenever they're not fighting (and even then the action scenes are relatively lackluster), they're filling time with idiotic dialogue and the titular character's mopey ramblings about his existence and why everything sucks. The animation style is semi-interesting but I've seen it done better in different shit (although these other things weren't exactly the same, they're similar in some respects). They suckered me in with promises of candy and funny stories, and all I got was ass rape.

FMA: Brotherhood is disappointing at best. Why did we need a second series that essentially tells the same fucking story? The first anime series was fine enough. Now they give us shit voice actors just to make us listen to Vic Mignignog more? Fuck you, FMA people.

I shouldn't have to dwell on Ghost in the Shell and Bebop. You don't fuck with those two. Deadman Wonderland is being replaced this coming Saturday with Samurai 7 and they're kicking out Bebop in favor of Eureka Seven. I don't have an issue with Eureka (it's my favorite mech series), just the fact that it's taking over Bebop. Couldn't they have taken out FMA? No, of course not, because of the fucking fan girls. It's not like Mignignog needs the goddamn money. And once again, fuck Bleach. Shit's terrible, and I can't stand Johnny Yong Bosch. He had one good role in Akira, and THAT'S IT.

Toonami, I've been with you since almost the beginning. I've loved you during this entire time, but now you're starting to take some wrong turns. It's been about three months and I don't know where you're going with this now. Just give me more vidya reviews and surprise me with more shit like Slender and Catherine.

I agree on Bleach's part, when they started adding fillers upon fillers it was like wanting to know what is the point. The manga is pretty interesting at this point although I admit it should have ended at Aizen then again I did want to know more about the Quincies. In all reality Toonami does seem to be more of a drag now that I think of it. I haven't been able to watch too much because of work on Saturdays, but I do watch it sometimes.

Keep in mind that part of the reason Toonami appears to be a drag is that the show has a short budget to work with due in no small part to the mismanagement of Cartoon Network for the last 10 or so years at the hands of idiots and the fact that Adult Swim has made a point to repeatedly insult, degrade, undermine, and minimize its action fans so they can run and rerun their God-awful comedy shows. The result of this abuse and segregation is an action block that can not pull as many fans as it used to being forced to compete with other networks that air the shows once reserved for Toonami. As evidence of how little monetary room Toonami currently has look at the fact that they can not even get Sarah back to show because it costs too much to animate her and Peter Cullen (the voice of Optimus Prime) no longer does the commercials or promos because they can not afford him either.

In addition, remember that before its demise some years back (I count the demise as the intro of Tom 4) the show had been on a downhill slide. The show was good, but the shows on the show were so-soish. Most of us who remember Toonami remember its golden years from about the time of Tom 1 to about the time of Tom 2's demise (roughly 1999-2004). We were younger then, all of us, and our memories do tend to be reflect upon those of a good nature as being better than they actually were (in my case, I remember all the glory of Toonami but none of the C, D, or F grades I got from blowing off my homework to watch). The new Toonami is not going to live up to all of our collective memories of how good the original show was, nor is it going to recapture all of the original demographic group it once held. On top of all that our VGAC group has been watching shows that haven't even been seen on Toonami in their original Japanese language with little to no editing/censorship for adult content. Toonami can not show all of that if for no other reason than the FCC will not let them do it (remember your Family Guy, specifically: The Freakin' FCC song), and the budget crunch isn't gonna help them either.

Now I am a historian, so it is my job to watch the past to keep it fresh for the present, but take my advice when I say that nothing is constant, and therefore everything changes. Accordingly, we have to approach the reintroduction of shows that we love with an open mind. If we apply all of the great and awesome memories we have of the old Toonami to the new Toonami then of course we are going to be disappointed and let down by the show. We owe it to ourselves to give the show a chance and to see what it can be. If nothing else, this Toonami is the rightful air to the old show, and in our case it cold be the difference between seeing the same old people and watching new members drift in.

To sum it all up: Give the show a chance, and even if you do not like the new Toonami consider what the new Toonami can be for us. As with the return of Kahless in Star Trek: The Next Generation, this new show will not full live up to the old one, but it can unite anime fans and bring people curious about anime and Japanese culture to groups like ours.

I don't care for the fact that it follows the manga. I watched the original FMA anime and I was content with that.

I fell in love with the original, so it was hard for me to accept some of the changes, especially the VAs.
