The other day, the new game mode for TF2 called Mann vs. Machine went live. For those of you unfamiliar with what this is, MvM is basically TF2's horde mode where you fight off an assload of robots possessing most of the abilities of the standard cast, though weakened somewhat to compensate for difficulty. I got a chance to play it with some of the members of my WoW guild shortly after the servers went up. We're now considering instating a "Mann vs. Machine Mondays" event. The way it works is that you pick a class at the start and you're given time to upgrade your character and weapons using $400. These upgrades can range from damage resistance or class-specific bonuses (for instance, the Heavy can increase the firing speed of the minigun by 10% increments). Once everyone's ready, the enemies begin swarming the map and your objective is to stop them from dropping a bomb near the upgrade center. In most waves, there's only one bomb, but in some cases, a tank is deployed carrying a bomb of its own. Once the bomb carrier is destroyed, another picks up right where the first left off. It's incredibly fast-paced and requires a decent combination of classes for success. I play Heavy more often than not and usually position myself right where they come in. It's impossible to change your class during waves, but change is allowed between waves. It's a fantastic game mode that I highly recommend to everyone whose computers can handle the game. Be forewarned that it's still in its early stages and therefore glitchy. We had multiple failures in attempting to connect to a server but eventually got in. There are some lag issues and an annoying glitch that basically makes it so that you don't have to do anything. I'm sure these issues will be fixed in time but aside from that, it's my favorite game mode in TF2. |
