If anyone is having graphical issues with Starcraft on Vista/Win7, there's a number of fixes you can try. Number one being to run in XP SP3 Compat. Mode (yes, SP3, the others are too complex for SC). Check all options underneath that. If that doesn't work, then open up your Screen Resolution window. Don't do anything, just leave it open and then go launch the game. If that doesn't work, try Alt+Tabbing out and then back in. This only works about half the time. Finally, you COULD make a .bat file and put it in the Starcraft folder. You'll need a echo command in a Notepad file to make it run. It should look something like, @echooff taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe (YOUR COMPLETE STARCRAFT DIRECTORY TO THE .EXE FILE HERE. Ex: Mine, C:\Program Files (x64)\Starcraft\Starcraft.exe pause start explorer.exe Depending on your OS and current build, the final line may have to read as this instead: C:\Windows\Starcraft\Starcraft.exe Now save it as a batch file. Name it and put it in the SAME DIRECTORY. I called mine SC_fix.bat. So it's directory should read: (Your directory where you installed SC)\Starcraft\SC_fix.bat (or whatever you named the file you just created). What this does is disable explorer, basically what is responsible for desktop graphics and your toolbar. In the newer versions of Windows, the taskbar is always automatically moved in front of running graphics. This constant action is why Vista/7 are so resource hungry. If you read the order, it gives the force shutdown command for explorer, launches your game, then restarts explorer after a short pause, just long enough to let you game run and take control of the system resources. Explorer will reboot, but won't mess with Starcraft since SC was running first. The way explorer is programmed, it will not mess with anything running before it. Microsoft designed it that way because all that's supposed to be running BEFORE explorer.exe launches are very critical Windows components. We just moved Starcraft into that preboot category. So your display may have icons/Backgrounds disappear right before it launches, but they'll be there when you finish your game, which is in fullscreen anyways, so you won't miss those temporarily disabled features while you're gaming. This goes for all the old-school games that ran exclusively on DirectDraw such as Age of Empires and Half-Life. I believe WoW falls under this category, but it is still supported by Blizzard, so patched versions of the newer expansions should resolve the issue. Damn that was hard. I haven't had to make a .bat file to patch a game in years. That was to get Guilty Gear Isuka past Windows Aero so it would stop lagging. Turns out it wasn't my computer, it was just constantly fighting Windows for the right to be displayed on top. With that, it's 11:26 and YOU'RE WELCOME!!!! |

The only way I'd be able to do Starcraft is with the sequel, and on my desktop most likely. My laptop's a piece of shit. Although, what I really like the idea of right now is doing this with either Torchlight II or Diablo III, whenever they come out. |

Anyways leaving the trolling aside, to play multiplayer all we have to do is create an internet hotspot and having everybody log in in that. You don't need the internet really and last time I tried with like 8 people and we were able to pull it of, so for that if we do play in here or a meeting, I think I can get that done for us wireless. |

Guys. Guys. I just found out that my English professor is the mother of THE Maynard! Ehm-Ay-friggin'-nard! o wo We were just going through our ideas for an argumentative essay, and then she mentioned that her son was a professional video-game player. Out of curiosity, I asked for his handle, and she wrote down Maynard- handle of the Terran-playing SC legend Miguel Bombach. I swear I didn't even think of that for the whole semester, even after seeing my professor's identical last name on the board a couple hundred times. Maynard A fellow UTEP student?!?!?! There's a chance I may even get to meet him in person because he likes to swing around El Paso still!!! Do you have any idea what was going through my mind when we were talking about this???

I just want to say this to everyone. When I play it is not a race against time to defeat me, rather it is a race against time to stop me from nuking my base. Tom and Noah have seen me do this countless times. |
