MvC3 (and other fighting games).

For me, MvC3 is the best fighting game out there. I loved TvC's control scheme and was overjoyed to hear that it was making it over to the newest game. I won the INNOVA tournament in the middle of February with my team of Ryu, Chris, and Wesker. I occasionally swap out Albert for Morrigan or someone else. I also like Super Street Fighter IV, but I occasionally become frustrated with how slow it sometimes feels. Throughout just about every Capcom fighting game, my best has been Ryu, but that spot belongs to Cody in SSFIV with Ryu in a close second.

I play Brawl, but regular Brawl tends to sort of...suck. Brawl + is amazing, and once I get Homebrew on my Wii again, I'll try Brawl -.

Any other fighters of note? For the record, I've played the first Blaz Blue, but something about it feels odd.

I was a part of this discussion on another forum... Allow me to post the same thing I posted there...

From what I can tell, there are 4 different kinds of Fighting games

1) Street Fighter/Mortal Kombat/Tekken- have their range of Low/Medium/High punches and kicks
2) the vs capcom/Melty Blood/ Guilty Gear- has just have A, B, C, D type controls
3) Power Stone/Ehrgeiz/Wrestling?- that deals with full 3D movement where you can move where ever you want (not to be confused with Tekken)
4) Smash Bros/Onimusha Blade Warriors/Turtles smash up - one main attack button, multiple platforms, items and Special attacks?

If you look at the 1 or 2, then you have pretty straight forward controls where movement of the control stick can easily set up special attacks (Dragon Punch, Hadoken, and half circle, and Full circle), whereas, if you use 3 or 4, you don't have any special attack input since the stick is giving you full movement to move around.

You can easily break it down into more specific details, but that is a pretty good summarization of most to all fighting games.

I'm sure there are specific exceptions here and there, but for the most part, that is how most fighting games work. I don't know if that was what you meant by fighting games, but I too enjoy a bit of Blazblue and MvC.

Yeah, I hated MvC2. Just about every aspect of it screamed that if you knew nothing about the system, best to move on to a different game. Tatsunoko was awesome, and I actually bought MvC3 the day it came out. That control system is genius. Besides that, the only other two fighters I've ever gotten into were Smash Bros and Soul Calibur. SC mainly because it was right next to the DDR machine and Conquest mode was a mafia game with possessed weapons. I've got both BlazBlue games, but it doesn't keep me that hooked. It screams Guilty Gear to me, so I go back and play that one.

Oh, I forgot about Soul Calibur. I loved SCII and III. Not so big on IV; I have to admit I liked the story mode in III. Also, Tekken's good, and I'm looking forward to the Capcom/Namco crossover fighters.

I played Guilty Gear once a long time ago. It was okay.

Regarding Mortal Kombat...I played Deadly Alliance back in the day, along with a little bit of Deception, but Mortal Kombat in general has never really tickled my fancy. The new one looks nice, but I probably won't buy it.

I liked the myriad of characters and combinations in MvC2, but the gameplay was so unbalanced...it's basically as you suggested.

Like I mentioned, I like the hacks for Brawl. I used to play in tournaments for the regular game, but got out of that habit. I still have some tourneyfag leanings, like a disdain towards items and a preference for normal stages like Final Destination. I'm more interested in MvC3 tournaments now, but I don't know where to look for them in town, aside from Elite Arena and occasional UTEP events. On that note, we really could make a tournament for that game work. We just need as much advertising as possible and a grand prize (I originally considered the entry fees, but I'm having second thoughts). Shit, you could put people on corners around the Union with fliers and have them scream about an upcoming tournament. I'd do it. The same thing could also apply for a Brawl tournament.

If anyone's willing to do it (I can't because I can't find my spare SD card), would you put - or + on your SD card for group meetings? That'd be nice.

I'm never been a lot in fighting games, I liked soul calibur II, but couldnt get much into it. The only others I really play are Melty Blood (even after last time when I played butterfly and he handed me my ass back in a silver tray, I still try the game) and smash 64, melee and brawl. Oh yea also marvel super heroes (the one with the gems), not to forget king of fighters but that just because every mexican has to play and at least finish the arcade once to earn your citizenship. The older versions of mortal kombat were fun, but I swear I was never able to beat the last f'cking boss in trilogy, seriously no matter the difficulty I always lost against that guy.

I've been wanting to play around with modding Brawl. I've got some character files, but one of the requirements was that you had to have the actual game to do it. I've been running it off a USB Loader for a year or so and only recently found my disc. Now just to find time to play around with it and figure out how it works.

Totally agree on SCIV. I think what turned me off most was the horrible artwork (all of them look like crack addicts) and the really laggy online connection. Other than that, I'm happy with either 2 or 3, now if we can convince Namco to quit changing everyone's controls every generation...

I wasn't clear on my SCIV opinion. It's not that I didn't like it. It just didn't click with me. I played it a lot with one of my former friends until we learned about Brawl +. When I say "former," it's because I stopped talking to him because he told me in plain English that he thinks he's better than me and the rest of my friends because he attends Baylor in Waco. It doesn't matter. I've always been better than him in most aspects anyway.

Also, I managed to get Homebrew back on my console and got Brawl - to work, so my earlier request isn't necessary. Brawl - is amazing, and I like their tagline; "If it's broken, break it until it's fixed." I've succeeded in adding a number of textures to the game, like Jack Cayman (MadWorld) and Ryu Hayabusa for Captain Falcon, Luke Triton (Professor Layton) and Adam Savage (Mythbusters) for Ness, and Balthier (FFXII) and Wesker for Snake. Some of the ones I found are exceptionally well-done.

But if you're not interested, that's fine I guess.

I've become frustrated with the Shadow Battle DLC Capcom releases every so often. There was only one challenging opponent in the first pack, and even then, I've only lost four times to it due to just fucking around with different characters. This second one (which is really just three teams with different themes) wasn't hard to beat at all. In fact, the hardest team included in the pack was just pitiful. If anything, they're all probably going to be 99 cents from here on in, but it's still...well, it's just not hard enough for me.
