Let's Play Project: "Challenge Play"

A basic summary of what's going through my head right now:

1. I DO want to record me playing games with commentary. Why? Cause I and my old audience thought they were hilarious. They were taken down when I never finished them, however.

2. I DO NOT want to jump into the ocean of mundanity that is "Let's Play." I want to do something completely unique, with it's own name, but still recognizable as a similar concept. There are tons of people who talk over video games. I want to do something that stands out and adds a personal touch and makes it into something worth watching, as well as keeps me interested enough in playing the game to actually finish it.

3. My current idea is "Challenge Play" or "Let's Play Challenge" or something with a similar name. The basic concept is for me to play a game, but with some kind of abstract handicap not normally done in-game, and not an in-game rule at all. This makes my playthrough different from the norm and keeps me interested in finishing it. Whenever I look for a game to play, it's been done before. Multiple times, by multiple people, with varying degrees of awesome and differing scales of l33tness versus comedy gold. I can't just pull out a game no one's played before, but I CAN devise my own way of playing through it.

A brief history lesson for the uninformed:

My original Let's Play Megaman X6 followed in the first footsteps of this idea by adding the "No Armor" rule. Each video amassed around over 4,000 to 6,000 views before it died when I found out in the course of doing the rest of the run that beating the final boss (as X) under this handicap just wasn't meant to be done. My following LP, Tomb Raider, died after one video that existed for about 2 days because playing the game on autopilot speedrun mode bored me to death and I had nothing witty to say to make it interesting. I played I Wanna Be The Guy on Skype once, and Junsei loved every minute of it.

That's basically every LP I've ever done.

4. Why not just find a game you like and LP it before someone else does? Those who know me know I'm an old-school gamer. I'm part of the group that believes that a large percentage of the gaming industry is stuck in a rut of unoriginality. Besides, LPing a game that was just released a few days ago is a no-no and makes you about as respectable as the guy who stalks a big-name LPer to comment "FIRST."

5. My first idea is to play Tomb Raider 2. Unlike Tomb Raider 1, the action starts up almost immediately into the first level, almost to a wake up call degree for those who watched people play the first game and have no idea what they're getting in to, because the series followed the learning curve of its original fanbase.

The challenge would be as follows:

-Play through using any weapons you want, but without using any med-packs. Collect all of the secrets.-

I've confirmed ahead of time that this is doable even without the New Game Plus. Doing it with New Game Plus would cut out most of the "oh man, gotta get lucky with the AI so I don't get hit as much" (I doubt you wanna see me do the same thing over and over and not even die). But, it'd still be challenging.

Wall of text aside, who would be interested in watching me do that? I've been considering doing this for a while and I think it might also help kick some life into gaming discussion and offer a few cheap laughs for everybody. I know a few people who would like seeing a Tomb Raider game in its entirety as well.

Did you edit your post? It doesn't say you did, but it looks like you did

Time does not wait for anyone.
Yes indeedy, I am all for this. :3 I'd love to see one of the older Tomb Raider games, and I'd definitely watch every episode you put out.

I'm certain most of the forumers will as well with how well they took to Chaos' Let's Play of Pokemon Gold. The name 'Let's Challenge' came to mind when I read that you were thinking of a name, but I'm not sure if anyone has done that before yet.

As far as I know, all of them are titled "Let's Play." The only exception, to my knowledge, is Tatsudoshi's "Spam Play," which seems to be exactly the same thing as Let's Play but the game is finished before he even starts putting out the videos. Thus, they all come out rather quickly, hence "Spam" Play.

I know UltraJMan did one "Let's Play Challenge" where he went through Cave Story with 3 HP and minimal items, grabbing only the required Polar Star, Fireball, and King's Sword weapons. To my knowledge, it was one of his favorite projects, but it was never a theme of his to always add in some arbitrary rule to make the game more challenging.

I'm talking about doing this as a regular theme in my LPs. Even the name "NegativeZeroZ" was made with the "one step beyond the impossible" idea in mind, which I've had since I began doing this sort of thing on my own. That's when I have the most fun playing games, so I thought it would be a good idea to make my LPs more interesting.

If you've seen NinBuzz on Youtube, they have a collection of directors and games, etc. so if we all collabed with a respective game I think that would work out great.

I'd need a software which can record my laptop screen? Do any of you have anything like that or something?

This topic isn't about a collab project, if that was the track you were on.

Though, that aside, if you ask anyone, pretty much everyone will say Hypercam or Fraps.
