Vespiquen definitely has her merits. 70 / 102 defenses aren't shabby for NU. And it has Defend Order, which can be used more than three times as opposed to Stockpile and Heal Order for reliable recovery. However, it suffers from a 4x weakness to Stealth Rock, which really hurts her. The abundance of Fire-types in NU (read: Magmortar) ruin her usage.

Exactly. While she may have a 4x weakness, if you baton pass from a curse Umbreon to her, she can get a head start and will be much easier to buff up. When she's fully buffed with Defense Order, she can tank an ice beam from a fully EV trained Milotic, which is 4x damage to her, and barely lose any health at all. Same goes for any other move that's super effective to her. Ideal Vespiquen set up is: Defend Order, Heal Order/Roost, whichever suits your fancy, Toxic to kill them while buffing, and Power Gem or Attack Order. Edited by Junsei, Aug 21 2010, 04:11 PM.

Roost would actually be much better for Vespiquen since it rids the Ice and Electric weakness. o3o Ice Beam wouldn't x4 damage against Vespiquen. Just x2. It's Bug/Flying and only Flying is weak to Ice. |

Since Stealth Rock is loltarded, any bug/flying type has it cut out for them. |

Honestly though it's better to consider the scope of Vespiquen in NU rather than OU. Your example of passing Curse from Umbreon indicates the OU tier. The problem is again, being able to setup to that +6. It's extremely hard for Vespiquen to do so, especially against a Milotic. Any Pokemon at +6 defenses are going to shrug off hits anyway, even supereffective hits so let's stick with something more basic. Let's take +1 Sp. Def. max HP / Sp. Def. Vespiquen and have standard Milotic with 60 Sp. Atk. EV use Ice Beam: Vespiquen is going to take roughly 25%. Coupled with how Milotic can just Toxic stall Vespiquen out and won't be taking much damage from Attack Order anyway you're going to need more team support to get around Milotic. Vespqiuen has too many threats to worry about to be honest - Entei, Charizard, Magmortar in NU and Arcanine, Houndoom, Rhyperior in OU, to name a few. If her typing and probably ability were better she'd be a more unique and useful Pokemon. |

Basically any strong Rock attack can rip through Vespiquen. xD It can't handle Steel-types well either. |

Vespiquen is just a bad case of typing, ability and poor speed. If you're aiming for a mixed wall in the lower tiers go with Registeel or Clefable. |

This makes me want to discuss more Pokemon. xD I'm trying to come up with a UU team (I had to make a OU team since my favorites are BL.) to maybe use against someone here who also made a UU team.

My mistake, I got Grass mixed up with Bug typings. I would like you to watch this video then. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uu6elxndStU Skip to 2:15 and watch the magic. Remember, both of these guys are pro competitive battlers from Marriland (one of which I have actually fought before). That Skarmory may have been a nuisance, but Vespiquen did what she's supposed to do, tank/stall and wear them down little by little. Umbreon was just an example, I'm saying ANY pokemon that can baton pass out to Vespiquen and use any move that will give her a defense increase to get her started would be good. Umbreon was just the first that popped into my mind. Regardless of whether or not there are better Pokemon out there than Vespi, I'm going to continue using her just because I dislike the OU tier and try not to use many from it. It's good to show that pokemon in lower tiers can handle themselves just fine too, if you know what I mean. |
