Dream Casting: Final Fantasy VII
Forget about Advent Children! We play casting director for a true film version of FFVII.

It may seem odd to suggest the mere chance of a Final Fantasy VII live-action adaptation so long after its 1997 release date, but history has proven that gamers simply can't get enough of the landmark title that put both Japanese RPGs and obscenely spikey hair on the map. Square themselves capitalized on this fervor with their recent "Compilation of Final Fantasy VII," a multi-media, multi-game project that did its best to stomp all over the original title's legacy by affiliating its good name with shameless cash-ins of dubious quality -- Crisis Core excluded. And while there have already been two attempts to stick Final Fantasy VII into a strictly non-interactive context, both Last Order and Advent Children represented nothing but the excesses of the later Final Fantasy games, and anime in general. So why not ponder the possibility of a real-life silver screen version of Final Fantasy VII, and forget about the current versions populated exclusively by Dragon Ball-Z-strength Real Dolls? It'll be fun.

Cloud Strife - Robert Pattinson

Call it typecasting if you must, but if you're looking for a brooding anti-hero with a penchant for starting off into the distance and muttering "..." and "...whatever," Pattinson's Twilight tenure proves that he's suited for more than just love scenes ripped from the pages of Amish romance novels. Plus, his hair is somehow able to achieve volume previously unknown to man, which would save this production some scratch by eliminating the millions of gallons of Aqua Net necessary for Cloud's signature coif.

Tifa Lockheart - Christina Hendricks

Hendricks might be a little too long in the tooth for the role of Tifa, but let's face facts; if you wanted to remain completely faithful to the majority of Final Fantasy VII's protagonists, you'd have to cast exclusively from The Disney Channel's stable of young actors. That being said, the buxom Mad Men actress could easily slip into Tifa's shoes with a quick dye job, mainly because she fits the character's completely-realistic-and-not-at-all-idealized female features to a "T." Plus, there's that whole "good at acting" thing, which many moviegoers find important.

Barrett Wallace - Wendell Pierce

"What?" you ask. "No obligatory Mr. T reference in a Final Fantasy VII article?" Regardless of Barrett's "pity the fool" inspiration, Mr. T jokes went out with the last century, and the dude's a cancer survivor who's pushing 60 -- not exactly the best choice for a modern-day FFVII film. The majority of you may be asking "Who's Wendell Pierce?" but those lucky enough to have seen HBO's superb series The Wire know that one of the best reasons to tune into this acclaimed and complex crime drama could easily adapt to the grueling demands of a video game movie.

Aerith Gainsborough - Mia Wasikowska

For the infamous, world-changing role of Aerith Gainsborough, you need someone frail, pale, and seemingly on the verge of imminent death. Hence, Mia Wasikowska, who played the lead in the recent Alice in Wonderland, primarily due to Tim Burton's preference for actors who appear to have extreme anemia. The only caveats is that Ms. Wasikowska would have to be comfortable with the fact that she'd be responsible with a whole new generation of nerds feeling emotions for the first time -- and that she'd really only have a screen presence for the first act, outside of flashbacks and Obi-Wan-style ghosts.

Cid Highwind - Jude Law

Again, Square was being more than a little unreasonable when initially deciding on Cid's age; the grizzled space veteran clocks in at a meager 32, when he should at least be a decade older. In a best-case scenario, we'd hop in a time machine and pull Dennis Hopper from his Easy Rider days of the late 60s, but since this technology is unavailable at the moment, Jude Law with his baked-in intensity add up to a fine choice, despite the pretty-boy good looks. Not to mention that Cid's incessant swearing would sound so much classier when filtered through Law's British pipes.

I don't really think FF VII needs a movie, or needs this cast for the movie. There are other final fantasies out there that could do better as a movie.

Robert Pattinson is hot and all but hes no Cloud! Alexander SkarsgÄrd could be him! <3

btw I got this from Marc(NosLived) lol. "A huge piece of my soul just died. 1up's "Dream Casting" lists Cloud Strife played by Robert Pattinson, and Sephiroth being played by Orlando Bloom. Talk about terrible casting."

Time does not wait for anyone.
I just knew you'd put Robert Pattinson on there. XD

Orlando Bloom I could at least tolerate. I actually like him (mainly because of PoTC and his role as Legolas in LoTR TO ISENGARD). Personally I think 6 or 9 need to get a movie. 7 and 8 got one, but the other two didn't get squat as far as movies go. At least, I don't think 6 got one, but I know for sure that 9 didn't.

Yeah.......NO........

I wouldn't watch it, I'd rather not see FF7's name tarnished anymore then it has become.

What Echelon said. VII's already got enough hate and all throughout the community for it's overratedness. I don't remember seeing a FFVIII movie at all before.

I feel 4 or 6 should get a movie. Both had good stories and are in need for an update that's not on a DS or PSP.

Yes, evil comes in many forms, whether it be a man-eating cow or Joseph Stalin, but you can't let the package hide the pudding! Evil is just plain bad! You don't cotton to it. You gotta smack it in the nose with the rolled-up newspaper of goodness! Bad dog! Bad dog!

And, isn't sanity really just a one-trick pony anyway? I mean all you get is one trick, rational thinking, but when you're good and crazy, oooh, oooh, oooh, the sky is the limit!

Announcer: So tick... do you think you could destroy the earth?
Tick: E gads! I hope not! That's where I keep all my stuff!

"Pwangg?" Trees don't go "Pwangg--" Llamas don't go "Pwangg--" Nothing found in nature goes "Pwangg", which means -- we're officially hip deep in the smelly stuff.

You know what? &@#$ tacos. And waiting. Damn you, Bullseye...damn you for making me hurt the ones I love. This time, it's personal. This time...it's for the tacos.

You should talk. Your costume's so tight you can tell what religion you are. Ever hear of a cup?

AAAAAAAAGHHH!! Packing chips! That's the greatest weapon on the face of the planet -- styrofoam packing chips! Just imagine getting nailed by some of these babies! Oh the humanity!

Dude, I had to hack that off to save you from zombie germs. You should totally put me on your Christmas card list.

If you're not Black Cat, then I'm done. But first -- The Olsen Twins: Good? Evil? Or part of the elaborate C.I.A. plot?

Pardoneth me, fair lady, but dost thou have any Grey Poupon?
