Softly spoken and well mannered, Lethler would be considered by most to be a true gentleman and he is far from being the archetypal commanding officer. Rarely needing to raise his voice to express anger, he respects the need for discipline aboard starship but has a comparatively lax and informal attitude compared to many of his colleagues. Lethler encourages his officers to speak freely and makes a point of being available to all of those who need him irrespective of their rank, almost viewing his crew - most of who are at least several centuries younger than him - as children in his care. To many of the younger officers under his command (or at least, the Human ones) Lethler might be the ideal Commanding Officer, someone who is willing to forgive and forget minor transgressions and not treat Ensigns with scorn, whilst to other more duty-driven personnel his attitude towards starship command often seems infuriating. Nonetheless, even he expects professionalism and dedication from his crew, believing that his laxer attitude towards command allows those under him to develop better interpersonal relations and thus allow the crew to work smoother and more efficiently as a team. At a personal level Captain Lethler is a man who truly values his friends, and someone who uses the term "friend" selectively. He is seen to be kind and compassionate without being overbearing or false. A man of sincerity and passion, he is not afraid to speak his mind on any issue. At the same time however, the good Captain is a man of many secrets. All though he enjoys telling others of the adventures he has had through the galaxy and frequently shares anectodes of those journeys with his much younger Human companions, he keeps the details of his past a closely guarded secret. Beneathe the cheerful and friendly front, Lethler is a deeply troubled man. The loss of his parents, his siblings, his wife and four of his five living children during the Borg attack on El Auria has had a deep effect on him. Even 105 years after the attack, Lethler finds himself haunted by the loss of so many people dear to him and has spent many decades searching for his only surviving son Tolian to no avail. He considers his career in Starfleet to be both a tribute to his eldest daughter Alleriana, who spent much time among Humans in the early 20th century and always held a fascination for them, but also a means to an end - he feels that if Starfleet allows him to explore the galaxy as Tolian has chosen to do, it will be easier to find his son. For those privy to his deepest secrets, it is clear that Lethler has only been able to endure the great pain of his loss thanks to the knowledge that Tolian was not among the casualties of the 2265 attack or the 2293 tragedy.
