Drake sat bored in his command chair, watching the star trails zip by on the main view screen. He rubbed his eyes; he was starting to feel a bit sleepy. Just then, the young officer at the Flight and Ops station spoke up. "We're here, Commander." said the officer. A few buttons were pressed, and the ship dropped out of warp, the planet coming into view. "Establish an orbit. Open a channel to the IRW Enchantra." Drake ordered. "Aye, Sir" said the helm officer. The ship flew into a stable orbit. The channel was opened, and Drake awaited a reply. ----- ”Sir. The Hygieia has just entered orbit. They are hailing.” Commander Taev Deletham leaned forward in his chair. ”Jam their scanners. I do not want them to know what is going on down there.” He squinted as the Federation ship eased to a stop in synchronous orbit. ”Shall we decloak?” ”Not until I give the command.” Taev turned to his tactical officer. ”Turekk, what is taking so long?” ”Our forces are in the installation now sir. Levels are stable. Destabilization is no long airborne. Those who breathed in the qualithium will die in days.” ”Casualities for the greater good,” he stared at the viewscreen and at the Hygieia silently waiting. Yet the Federation was notorious for suddenly becoming impatient. ”Tell them to hurry up.” ”They are meeting resistance sir. Civilians wanting aide, uprisings from those who think this was intentional.” ”Tell them to shoot to kill. They are out of time. They are to retrieve the drive and then transport back.” ”Aye sir,” responded Turekk ”And the Hygieia sir?” asked the con officer. ”Keep and eye on them. Keep their scanners jammed. Jam even their transporters. Should they find a way through, at the second you see any form of transporter action, decloak. Then and only then. We need to buy all the time we can get.” ”Shall we answer their hail?” Taev knew how the Federation played this game of waiting. This Captain Lee would soon demand a response. He only hoped it would be later than sooner. ”Not yet. Let them wait a little longer. The longer they are unaware of what we’re doing down there, the more they do not know what the Dominion left behind in their surrender.” ----- Drake stayed seated as he awaited a response. He was a patient man, but only to an extent. But he also knew the Hygieia was by far no match for a fully armed Warbird. He tapped the arm rest of his command chair, waiting as patiently as possible. "Where are they?" he queried, frustrated. "Unknown, Sir." said a young assistant tactical officer. "They could be cloaked, although I don't see why." the tactical officer added. Drake remembered of a well known Betazoid Starfleet Counselor aboard the Enterprise that could sometimes sense thoughts and emotions, even if one could not see the person there. It was at times like this that he wished he had such an officer aboard the Hygieia. "Scans?" Drake questioned, singly worded. "Inconclusive, Sir." said an officer at the Science station. The Assistant Tactical Officer spoke again; "Sir, I recommend we raise shields, and go to Yellow Alert." he said. "Negative!" Drake snapped, "If they're out there, and capable of detecting us, I don't want them thinking we want a fight." he said. "Remain at condition green. They're out there somewhere. Keep hailing until we get a reply." Drake finished. Drake sat back into his chair, and continued staring at the screen, waiting for the warbird to make itself known. ----- Taev continued to stare at the Hygieia. It was only a medical vessel, performing her duty to answer a distress call. It was not a war machine. And there was no way it would stand up to a Romulan warbird. But, then again, they would certainly wander why a warbird was called to this planet instead of a less threatening vessel. The answer to that was easy. All sides, Klingon, Romulan, and Federation emerged from the most recent war with deep scars inflicting serious injuries that would take many years of healing. ”With this Dominion technology we can expand, conquer, rule,” he finished his thought pattern out loud. ”Sir?” asked Turekk. ”Nothing. What is taking them so long?” ”Sir, they are experiencing elevated levels of resistance.” ”Are they shooting to kill?” ”I relayed that message sir.” ”Well, relay to them that they better hurry up before we shoot to kill, to destroy that installation.” ”Aye sir.” The science officer aboard spoke up. ”Commander Taev, qualithium levels have dissipated. Those infected can still be treated but the cause will be untraceable. All qualithium signs have vanished.” ”That is what happens when you mess with such an unstable substance,” he said under his breath. ”But our drive is still down there. The nosy Federation will eventually see it, scan it, and know what we are up to.” ”It is a foregone conclusion that they are wandering why we have not transported anyone down to the surface,” said the con officer. ”We are close enough for them to detect transport signatures.” ”Turekk, prepare a squad of marines. Transport them to the planet. Tell them to help our team already down there to retrieve that drive. That will help us out as well as stall our Federation friends a while longer.” ”You will have to talk to this captain Taev,” said Turekk. Taev snapped his head around and looked at his TO. He gave him a deathly look but admired that about him. Yes, Taev was going to have to speak to this Captain Lee face to face via viewscreen, but precious seconds were precious seconds and he needed every one of them. Taev looked back at the viewscreen and the Hygieia floating out there. ”Yes. I will have to. I always enjoy meeting those who I shall conquer.” ----- Drake continued to patiently await some kind of sign from the warbird. But it was still unseen and undetected. But just as he was about to go get a coffee from the replica in his Ready Room, an officer at the Science Station piped up. "Sir. I'm picking up transporter activity" said the officer. Drake nearly burst from his seat, "They're out there, then!" he exclaimed. "I'm tired of waiting. If they want to direct us on how to do things, we'll get the orders from them on the surface." he said. He tapped his commbadge. "Commander Lee to Main Shuttlebay." he said, waiting for a reply. "Shuttlebay here, Sir. What can we do for you, Sir?" "Prepare a runabout to depart to the surface of the planet immediately. I'm paging a paramedic team now." He tapped his commbadge again... "Commander Lee to Medic Team. Head to Main Shuttlebay and prepare to depart to the surface for investigative field duty. Lieutenant Stardancer, stay on the ship for now. I only want to investigate for now". Drake sat and waited for the orders to be carried out. Moments later, the Ops officer reported in; "Shuttle has departed, Sir.". Drake nodded. "Keep me informed of their progress." Drake ordered. "Aye, Sir." the officer acknowledged. Just then, the Tactical officer piped up. "Sir! Romulan Warbird decloaking!" he said with a raised voice. "On screen!" he said, almost yelling. Sure enough, a warbird was decloaking not far from them. "Damn it! Recall the shuttle!" he hollered. Ops nodded after pressing a few buttons. "Shuttle recalled, Sir." the Ops officer said, "Aaaaaand... They're home, Sir." he added after a minute or so. "Good. Hail the warbird." he ordered. Ops nodded, "Frequencies open, Sir.". ----- ”Our men are almost upon the driver sir. They say they’ll have it in five minutes,” said Turekk. ”They better. I think it is time we meet Captain Lee face to face.” ”Aye sir. Viewscreen on your command.” ”And keep it zoomed on me. I don’t want them seeing the bridge. And continued blocking their scans.” ”Aye sir.” ”Viewscreen on.” A human man appeared before Taev. He was just another human. Another Picard, another Riker, another Sisko. They all looked tough and able but deep beneath that hard conditioned Federation exterior was a soft and gullible human interior. All the previously mentioned men all managed to find ways of beating the odds. Someone somehow and somewhere was going lose against those odds and Taev was going to make sure this, ”Captain Lee, I presume,” was going to be his trophy. ----- He smiled. ”Apologies. I was told you were the captain of your vessel. I am Taev Deletham, commander of the Romulan Warbird Encharta. It pleases me a great deal to see the Federation so generous and willing to aid us in our most recent tragedy. I have men on the surface now performing initial assessments.” ----- Drake nodded. "You kept us quite in the dark, for a while there, Commander." Drake spoke. "Let's just hope for the sake of the Empire that we can work together to find a solution to this affliction." he said. Deep down, Drake was suspicious of just why the Hygieia was kept in the dark for so long. But he kept quiet about his suspicions, so as to not anger the Commander of that fully laden Warbird staring them down. Whatever they were really doing wasn't quite as important as helping to save the afflicted. "We have medical personnel ready to beam or shuttle down to the surface on your command, Sir." he informed. "Whenever you're ready, we've been ordered by the Romulan Senate to strictly coordinate our rescue efforts under your direction, Commander." he added. "As you know, our ship is a hospital rescue vessel. We are highly equipped to handle many varieties of medical emergency." he finished. Taev raised an eyebrow. ”I am familiar with your ship commander, though I admit to have never come across one. I kept you in the dark because…well, I was coordinating efforts on the surface. I just did not have time until now. You may notice your transporters are being jammed. That is, assure you, to the protection of you and your crew. Though the immediate crisis has passed, the level of toxins in the air are still fatal to humans. That is something my men are working on as we speak. Now I really must return to my work. I will get back in touch with you when it is safe for you and your crew.” ----- ”What’s is it?” Taev blurted as soon as Commander Lee’s face disappeared from the viewscreen. Turekk had been waving and trying to get his attention. ”The gravity drive has been retrieved. They are too far underground and there is still too much disturbance for transport. They shall be in range in two minutes.” Taev thought back to some of his previous encounters with Starfleet. ”You know, something tells me we may not have two minutes.” |

I think I'm done, too. I can't think of anything more to add. I'll go ahead and compile and post the JP. |
