These guidelines are very much in draft; please don't take them as formalised until this notice is removed. There are a variety of guilds open for membership. Many of them have a history stretching back hundreds of years, and all guilds are recognised across the world. All guild members are entitled to take another name which reflects their expertise, usually in the form of [given name] [guild name] [surname] -- for example, Gerald Aeros Kipling. Each guild name is given alongside the badge, below. Joining a Guild Once a character account has [x] posts, he or she may apply to join a guild [link here]. At present, the guilds are overseen by the board administrators, but once a guild has [x] members, they are free to hold a poll for their guild leader. Guild applications will initially be accepted by the admins, but after the poll, responsibility for accepting new members will fall to the guild leaders. Members should be accepted or given a reason why their application has been denied within three days. Once a member's application has been accepted, the account will be added to the relevant guild group and the guild badge will be added to their profile and appear alongside all of their posts. Why join a Guild? Apart from the spiffy badges, guild membership allows another sense of fellowship between members. As the guilds grow, votes and guild-specific activities will take place, organised jointly by guild leaders and the board admins. Other activities, in-guild competitions and votes will allow members to take more responsibility within the guild and enjoy a sense of community and ownership. Of course, guild membership is not compulsory. However, a character cannot belong to more than one guild at a time -- the only exception to this is the Captain's Table, which is really less of a guild and more of an exclusive club. To leave a guild, a written application must be made by posting in the guild forum. This will generally be accepted by a board admin or guild leader, at which time the character is free to apply to join a different guild. Guild requirements and activities Although there is no official currency system on the board, it should be noted that most guilds do require some membership dues -- it would be worth considering whether your character can reasonably afford the fees. Different guilds have different requirements of their members: some may call meetings which all members (who can reasonably and ICly make it) are expected to attend; others may request a monthly or quarterly written check-in report. Guild leaders are free to hold polls among their members as to what activities or requirements they would prefer, though guild leaders should liaise closely with the board admins to talk through ideas for developing their guild. Guild FAQs What about my ship's engineer? There are various cases where an individual could arguably be a member of more than one guild. However, the only group that allows multiple memberships is the Captain's Table, and even then, a member may only subscribe to one other guild. (A character who is a member of the Captain's Table and another guild will be placed in the Captain's Table member group and given a custom member title to denote their other guild, most often Aeros or Oceanos. These members may also use both their standard guild and the Captain's Table guild badges in their signature, if they wish.) In the example given, a ship's engineer, the decision ultimately rests with the engineer herself whether she wants to subscribe to the Ingenium or Oceanos guild. However, generally speaking, it would make more sense to mark herself as an engineer; where she does her engineering is less important than the fact she does it, though she might wish to explain that she's been a seaboard engineer for however many years if she's looking for another job. Similarly, a writer employed by an airship captain, while technically serving as a member of his crew, would be far more likely to choose to take the guild title of Aucteros over being an Aeros. And so on... If there's any confusion, please feel free to ask an admin. The decision does come down to the individual character's preference at the end of the day, but we're always happy to help. What if there isn't a guild for me? The guilds we have defined already should cover most professions, perhaps with a bit of tweaking, but we recognise there are some that just don't fit. Some professions don't tend to take guild membership because they gained their qualifications through university study rather than apprenticeships, such as doctors; others may not have enough talented professionals who have made a name for themselves yet, and so a guild has not been founded. If you'd like to start a guild, please get in touch with an admin. We'll work through gauging interest and help you to set up a new guild with its own member title and group badge. Any more questions? Feel free to ask! Post a topic in Queries and Suggestions or PM an admin. If you happen to come up with something we hadn't though of that would be helpful here, we'll happily add it to the Guild FAQ section. The Guilds | AerosAirmen make up the crews of airships -- anyone from a fleet admiral to a lowly deckhand is eligible to apply for membership of the Guild of Airmen. Most airmen serve actively on a ship, though retired airmen are still eligible to be guild members. The guild is relatively new, as are airships, and as such there are some political differences between Aeros and members of some of the older guilds; some of the particularly magically-inclined or especially earth-bound guilds are particularly opposed to the technologically advanced airmen, viewing them as anti-magic or too head-in-the-clouds. There also tends to be some friendly rivalry between airmen and seamen, though generally the two guilds get on well. Airmen also work well with engineers, artificers and in some cases merchants, depending on what sort of trips or cargoes they tend to run. | AlquimosAlchemists are most famous for their search to transform lead into gold and the quest for the elixirs of immortality or everlasting youth. The guild as a whole tends to blend magic with science: some of their more advanced ventures edge close to the territory of physical chemistry, but alchemists also have a strong background in theoretical and practical magic, and many have a sideline in wizardry and magicianship. Members of the Alchemists' Guild tread the line between artistry and science, pulling elements of creativity, magic and scientific enquiry into their endeavours. They are occasionally seen as eccentric, but despite the apparent impossibility of their quest -- even Tzeon's magic hasn't yet seen base elements turn all that shiny -- but tend to be methodical and highly determined individuals with a flair all of their own. | TecnicosArtificers are those who are most skilled in the trade of making items, such as furniture, clothing, jewelry, household items, and tools. They may be carpenters, artists, stonecutters, jewellers, potters, glassworkers, or skilled in any one of a number of other crafts. Artificers tend to be highly creative individuals, often with a certain vision or idea which drives their work. Artificers are considered one of the more magically-inclined guilds, and many members have some magical ability or training. They often work closely with architects and engineers, although artificers tend more towards an artistic nature -- even those who create practical items or tools -- and often aren't as highly trained in the technical aspects of trades like architecture and masonry as members of those guilds might be. | ArchitectosArchitects are highly trained and skilled in designing buildings, civil and social areas such as parks and thoroughfares, houses, and sometimes even neighbourhood or whole city layouts. They blend artistic flair with technical brilliance to come up with designs which are both fit for purpose and aesthetically pleasing. Architects often work closely with artisans and stonemasons; for some projects, they may also work with engineers and blacksmiths. Specialisms within the area of architecture include naval or aerial architecture -- designing sea- and airships -- civil architecture, which focuses less on buildings and more on road and green space design, and restorative architecture, which allows the architect to use their specialist knowledge to repair or restore a building in need of structural maintenance. | FerrariosBlacksmiths | IngeniosEngineers are the driving force behind the technological advancement of the world. They design | Preintos | Mercantos | Musiquos | Foros | Oceanos | Cementeros | AuctorosWriters still form the backbone of communications across the world. They are employed by governments, external agencies, royal courts and dozens of other institutions; since not everyone is taught to write, those who can are held in high esteem in many places. | DucereMembers of the Captain's Table are the only guildsmen who may also hold membership of another guild, and use both guild titles in their name (e.g. Archie Ducere Aeros Hennick, captain of the airship Elusive Dreamer). Most Captain's Table members use 'Ducere' before any other guild title. The image of the Captain's Table is changing, gradually, from old men towards a newer breed of captain: somewhat younger, more dynamic individuals. Membership of the Captain's Table is exclusive, by invitation only, and requires the individual to have been captain of a ship for a period of years. Most Captain's Table members are seamen; as airships are relatively new, there are still some older Ducere who maintain that airship captains shouldn't be granted membership. Nevertheless, members range from salty sea captains to up-and-coming airship captains, government cargo ship captains and even the occasional pirate. Disclaimer: Although we, the admins, have shamelessly pilfered Latinate words for the guild titles, we're not fluent, and indeed didn't quite intend the guild names to be genuinely Latin. Please don't hold the inaccuracies of the grammar or case against us! |
