It happened one night, a slight ripple in the cool dark air. Like a dark cloud that covered the full moon for mere seconds. Nightlife slowed for a moment before deep bass rhythms and pulsating bodies continued on, never noticing the change. This was something that had never happened. Not in the thousands of eras the Destined had implemented the Gate with the Guardian. But now, in the blink of an eye the Guardian was gone. This wasn't as though the Gate could merely be pulled open by an innocent bystander, or a blown open by a strong etheral wind. The doorways could only be opened with the Key possessed by the Guardian, and he was nowhere to be found. Vanished, as if his existence was completely wiped from the records. But this is what caused the greatest concern. For the Key could not be given to anyone else. The Destined could not obtain a replacement. Not without the Predecessor's blessing. So the Gate was to remain open, and with it, the merging of two realms. And with this, the slow agonizing destruction of both planes of existence. Where the only link between these Realms had been the hazy remembrance of dreams or the vivid myths of extraordinary creatures rumoured to be Gods, now death would fall upon those who past into the parallel worlds, where the invisible line divided them. __________________________________ Tyvis woke that morning, head buzzing and his entire body restless. He couldn’t place it, but something just didn’t feel right. And with the overwhelming agitation, he threw on some sweats and a zipup before quietly pulling the front door closed behind him. The sun was just beginning to peak over the water’s endless reach, the sky a myriad of breathtaking colours. With earbuds planted in both ears, he pulled the hood over his head, hiding the shower of braids from the light’s touch. He didn’t focus on anything, instead controlling his breathing and forcing his mind to remain untainted by the pressing feeling that originated from his chest. As his steady trot carried him around the first signs of market life, eyes gradually turned to follow him. The attention went unnoticed for almost the entirety of his outing. It wasn’t until he was four blocks from his house that something pulled him free of his zen like state. Slowing down, he paused the music, the small rectangular player warm beneath the cool touch of his skin. With one hand he pulled out the earbuds and looked around carefully. There was certainly the feeling of being watched. And it was truly intense, far more so than what he was used too. And then a slight blur of movement caught his attention. His eyes focused on it immediately, and the moment they did, his stomach dropped to the ground. At the far end of the side street appeared a disfigured body. It’s mouth hung in an ‘O’ as the jaw was clearly unattached from the rest of the skull. There was very rare occasion that Tyvis saw things like this. But that wasn’t the worst part. No. For behind this horrific creature was a flood of others, all in similar appearance. Once he made eye contact, there was no way to hide. It was too late. Slow at first, the crowd quickened in pace right towards him. He would have no chance to fight back. Which gave him only one other option. So with earbuds slung around his neck, he twisted around and bolted in the direction of home. With incredible skill and grace, the young man hopped fences, climbed fire escape ladders and ran across building rooftops. He would take the long way home. Until he was sure they wouldn’t be able to find out where he lived. If he mingled his living scent with those of others, there would be no way for them to track him too. So he hopped down into a quiet alleyway and rushed through the market as the first groups of shoppers browsed the fresh produce. Although the temperature was no more than 65 degrees, the extensive workout he was going through and the adrenaline pumped rivlets of sweat to soak his body. As polite as possible, Tyvis darted around bodies and crowds, just close enough so he became masked. Once he reached the edge of the market, he slowed down to a jog with the hope of checking on his progress. Looking back over his shoulder, his brown eyes tried to look for any sign of his pursuers. They were nowhere in sight, but that didn’t mean they weren’t still trying to find him. Without any further delay Tyvis turned back around in the direction home was located. So, taking another deep breath he pushed on. ____________________________________________________ She sat with her long hair pulled over her shoulder, webbed fingers delicately combing out the strands of weaved blue-green seaweed. Her eyes stared down at the golden sand, mind lost in thought while the remainder of her squadron sat around the camp chattering. This was a typical occasion, as she was not one to engage in mundane conversation. It just didn’t appeal to her. So instead, she pulled the hair wrapping from her thigh length strands. They wouldn’t be back in the water until their recon was done in two days time so her hair could be free until then. As the aquatic algae fell around her feet her thoughts switched from the trivial to what brought her there to begin with. The Master of the Temple had asked them to come to the surface in order to check the borderlands. There was a point after the neutral zone where her people and the Nagas were not allowed to cross. It had been agreed upon by the leaders of both Southeastern clans that to prevent further bloodshed and war between the two races, there would be a safety zone, a small strip of land on both sides of the clans’ border where they could be safe from any attacks on the other. But the day before had come a report that a perimeter scout had gone missing. It was the first time in the many years the peace agreement had been around something like this had happened. Elyrial couldn’t remember such a tense time as now in her life. So the Master had gathered a group of the best in each class of practices to go take a look. It hadn’t been her idea, truthfully she would have been just as happy to stay back home. She didn’t and never had looked for the attention. That sort of thing was only a cause for trouble, the complete opposite of what she wanted. But there was little choice, so she bit her tongue and did as she was told. An hour later... Elyrial was in a light, semi-alert sleep. The cool night air would have been too much to bear had it not been for her long hair acting as a blanket of sorts. But the chilled breeze was not what stirred up awake. Her eyes fluttering open, she inhaled several times before it was confirmed. There was the scent of something burning. And it was not pleasant. Now fully aware of her surroundings, the water nymph got to her feet in a single smooth movement. Just as she began to try to assess the direction it was coming in, the group’s current watcher let out a shrill whistle to indicate he’d found or seen something. With the rest of her group pulling together, they moved in the whistle’s direction. As they drew close, what happened next left Elyrial in a state of shock and semi-consciousness. The images came in fragmented and in painful waves. None of it made sense. All she remembered was seeing the pools of blood, the dead body. Then a blinding pulsating light that left her sensitive ears ringing. The only thing that came to mind was casting an Absorption spell. As the large sphere of water engulfed her, the whole world went black. |
