* So, if anyone has any more info, thoughts, or questions on Mobile Hotspot devices, please post it all here ... thanks. Net10 ZTE Z289L 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot * It looks like Net10 is coming out with, down the road, a new 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot device running on AT&T. * The Hotspot will be called the ZTE Z289L ... and it's suppose to be the same one that's also coming to Straight Talk. * Here's the tutorial link: http://tracfone.deviceanywhere.com/net10/home.seam?custId=NTZEZ289L&locale=en_US L Turk E |

I saw this when I was over on the Net10 site on another issue. It is available now. It is basically allows data tethering (up to five devices), using WiFi (if available), or Data over the 4G/LTE Cellular network (when WiFi is not available.) While some phones have tethering capability built in, the data tethering service offered appears to be only for their "hot spot" device ($79.) Data service cards for Net10 hot spot device: $10 / 0.5GB / 2 week service $20 / 1.0GB / 30 days service $30 / 2.5GB / 30 days service, and $50 / 5.0GB / 60 day service Note that the above service plans are not Unlimited, and have a service life. To compare best Net10 Data versus TracFone Data: Net10 tether data is $10/GB with a 60 day service time TracFone doesn't allow tethering, and data is $25/GB, with unlimited service time. |

* I see over on HSN.com for the first time, that they have the Net10 ZTE Z289L Mobile Hotspot for sale for $130. * This seems to be the one that uses the AT&T 4G LTE network, and it comes with 2.5GB of Data that's good for 1 year. * HSN.com Link: http://www.hsn.com/products/net10-zte-4g-no-contract-hotspot-w25gb-data-1-year/7800012 T U R K

I just got this to replace my non-working Umax hotspot on Straight Talk. It's not a bad little unit at all! It does seem to be throttled at around 5M down/2M up, though. Something else to be happy about with this unit - I no longer have to go to some dog-slow web page just to find out my balance. It's right on the unit. |

Is this a good price and a good device? Can I transfer minutes from a Net10 feature phone onto it? |

5 GB of data is worth $50 on on Net10 (also $50 on TracFone at $10 per GB). So the bare unit itself is worth $50 (for this sale), which seems to be the going price for this device -- so it isn't really a special. You can buy a used one on Amazon for $20, and you can buy a hotspot units as low as $10 at Walmart, and Best Buy also has a bunch starting at $50, so it pays to shop around. What I don't see in the HSN ad (and it is important for comparison purposes) is what actual carrier it runs on and what frequencies are covered. However the ZTE website (https://www.zteusa.com/zte-z289l) lists the frequencies as: LTE-FDD: Band 4/17/2/5 UMTS: AWS/850/1900MHz WiFi: 802.11 b/g/n The LTE bands tell me it is designed to run on AT&T. It might be a good-enough buy if none of your phones support tethering/hotspot, and you also have some WiFi-only devices you travel with (such as kids with tablets who want to play Pokemon Go). Its compatible WiFi frequencies are not all that extensive, but should be adequate for most WiFi devices you might have. If you are also in the market for a new phone, especially towards the higher end, then it would make more sense to choose a phone model that already has tethering/hotspot capability (its worth at least $50 extra). Both my wife's and my phone support tethering/hotspot, and my kids have their own data plans, so I can't see ever needing this device. But I can see how it may be attractive for those who have lower-end smart phones or feature phones, and also travel with WiFi-only devices such as Notebooks or tablets. |

* Dr.M .... the Net10 ZTE Z289L mobile hotspot has been out for over a year now, and it uses the AT&T 4G LTE network. * It's also been out for Straight Talk at Walmart stores for over a year now too, and the ST version at Walmart also uses AT&T. * The HSN deal also includes 1 year of service for the device and car charger as well, so not too bad of a deal overall ... * But I agree that if you do look around and do some research, you most likely will find some better deals, etc with these devices. What do you do when the 1 year service runs out? Those data cards are pretty short term by themselves. |

* loboheeler .... yeah, I don't know ... I guess you just start using the monthly cards after that? * Or, buy two of these devices, and when one runs out, use the other one, it would be cheaper that way. 4G LTurkE
