AT&T to abandon 2G? ... What of those Tracfone/Net10/ST phones that use an AT&T SIM?

Maybe that is why Net10 is coming out with smartphones now?

Yep, in other sources it sounds like AT&T will still support the 2G but the 1900 band will go away.

I'm hoping for some new 3G Tracfones.

* That's good (I hope) they are getting rid of 2G ... then maybe we'll get some good G speed on our cheap phones.

* I am waiting for the first WiFi Tracfone though, which I think is coming sooner than later...

* And of course, it will be on a GSM only Tracfone as we all know ... no love for the CDMA side.. :ermm:

Here's the latest lowdown on the 2G Shutdown by AT&T from the Huffington Post . . . :O

AT&T 2G Shutdown To Be Complete In 2017: Get Ready To Upgrade

AP | By PETER SVENSSON
Posted: 08/03/2012 3:54 pm Updated: 08/04/2012 1:25 pm

NEW YORK (AP) AT&T Inc. said Friday that the shutdown of its second-generation, or "2G," wireless network
will be complete by the end of 2016
, a process that will force customers with older phones to upgrade to "3G" or
"4G" handsets.

In a regulatory filing, the Dallas-based company said 12 percent of its customers on contract-based plans, or 8.4
million people, have 2G phones.

AT&T said it's shutting down the older network, which doesn't support high data speeds, city by city. It said earlier this
year that the process has started in New York City, and it's trying to move the city's 2G subscribers to new phones.

By shutting down 2G and using the same space on the airwaves for 4G, AT&T can increase data capacity by more
than a hundred-fold. Data use is skyrocketing as people adopt smartphones, and the company is facing a "spectrum
crunch" in some areas.

Other companies are also "refarming" 2G spectrum. Sprint Nextel is shutting down the Nextel 2G network and moving
subscribers to Sprint 3G.

The second generation of wireless technology debuted in the 90s and was the first one to apply digital technology to
cellphones, boosting call quality and network capacity. Third-generation networks, with higher data speeds, starting
becoming widespread in the U.S. about six years ago.

Among the 2G devices on AT&T's network are the first Apple iPhone, which debuted in 2007.

-------------------------------

And, if you're wondering what Verizon plans to do in light of AT&T's announcement ... According to the Wall Street
Journal, a Verizon spokesperson stated that Verizon has no plans to abandon its 2G service in the foreseeable future.

How to Track AT&T’s 2G Network Shutdown

AT&T, which is shutting down its 2G network three years earlier than other networks, has launched a website to
geographically track the shutdown...

This is the link which will take you directly to AT&T's website... "It's Time to Adopt 3G and Develop a Migration

When TracFone gets 3G (Samsung s390G, LG 840G) you know it is old technology, and prior specs (2G) are
effectively dead (from a marketing standpoint.)

This is one reason I laugh at ATT and Verizon sometimes.. They spent billions of dollars building their networks and
didn't spend nearly enough on the spectrum needed to operate them. So, in terms in short term prospects, they have
done well. But long term, Sprint owns more spectrum than Att, Verizon, and T-mobile combined.

It will be a lot easier for Sprint to put up towers where they don't currently have them, than for the others to constantly
try to shift customers around and shut down one piece of network because it's so desperately needed for other uses.
And with Verizon's rural coverage sitting largely vacant, they seem more than happy to lose a little less money on it
by letting Sprint roam on it.

Good luck Att lol. That is my big issue where I live... I drop calls constantly, and I'm sure it is because the Att network
my LG 840g uses is so congested.

Tracfone still allows the activation of 2G AT&T phones (e.g the Samsung S125G). I wonder when (and if) they'll notify customers that they need an upgrade.

At this point, I wouldn't hold my breath as to whether TracFone will make a formal announcement.
Based on what you have observed, it seems as if TracFone is only interested in selling off its 2G phone inventory.
Unsuspecting customers be d*mned.

But, time will tell.

There is a precedent for a mandatory service change when the TDMA network was shut down about 10 years ago. Tracfone offered either free or discounted phones to compensate. I did not see this as my service had been changed to CDMA after getting a new phone.

Actually the Telogis map is showing the total 2G shutdown so far from all carriers.
As AT&T has the most aggressive schedule (Jan 2017), it makes sense that most of it is by them.

T-Mobile will sunset 2 years later, but is stripping out EDGE service earlier. Not much of a loss anyway with their poor coverage.

I hope AT&T doesn't start shutting down northern Michigan anytime soon.
I am still using a 2G phone, they have already shut down 2G internet in my area but I can still make voice calls and texts.

Northern Michigan sounds cold. You need to bundle up and get the phone for free.

Makes sense they would cut 2G data first as few use it. There now are no 2G phones on the Tracfone website.
AT&T has been selling 3G GoPhones for a good while.
