The Sweeper
Bad To The Bone.
So, if anyone has any more info, thoughts or questions on this phone, feel free to post it all here ... thanks.

2 new phones have appeared on Net10's "Activate Phone" page.

The LG 900G.

Posted Image

And the Samsung R335C (I mentioned in another thread it was mis-labled. I was wrong).
Looks like the Samsung Gusto for Verizon.

Posted Image

The LG 231C also appears on Net10's site and there is a better picture in the Tracfone thread.

(Update- Added a alternative user manual for LG900, being there isn't one for it)

ALTERNATIVE MANUAL FOR THE LG900G

It's true there is not manual as you'd expect for the LG900G. But, there is a user manual for the LG GW300, which is the same phone, just sold in a different market.

There will be some differences. It will not explain absolutely everything as it is a basic user guide (for beginners?), but it is a little better than what came with the phone. It at least tells you what the icons are that you will see at the top of the screen :)

LG GW300 manual (5.94MB file size)

Sounds good on making it the main thread for LG 900G Turk.
As always, you and Sweeper are on top of these new phone discoveries.

I figured next you might be thinking my post on the 900G in another thread should be moved here,
so that's what I did...

Looking over the models Sweeper listed. Then I went to work. I know some of this is a bit heavy
but it may be an insight to what this phone can handle (unless things get stripped down)

That LG 900G appears to have a 2 megapixel camera capture setting but I believe that this may be
a 'digital zoom' value and that it really has a 1.3mp camera. (Time will tell), 15mb user available internal
memory, does FM, MP3, external memory, USB cable transfer, and more of course. The main menu
screen appears to have the same 9 icons like previous phones plus 3 more. But the other three were
usually grouped under some other menu.

LG 900G

I sniffed a user agent profile of an LG 900G and came up with some features the unit advertises is
capable of, but not necessarily have (I've noticed many types of phones send out false advertisement).

Of those: 320x240 screen 16bit color, Web- HTML (v4), HXTML (v1), frame support, and shockwave flash.
GPRS and EDGE data. Browser is Teleca version Q7.1 Web security - WTLS-1 WTLS-2 WTLS-3 SSL3.0 TLS1.0

At least some DRM stuff, like forward lock, DRM message, OMA Download. Fear not, (just yet) they may simply use
this to ensure what you are acquiring safely to your phone and send some kind of acknowledgment back to the download site.

Some sort of e-mail capability.

When sending multimedia SMS- 307,200 byte limit, and and image no larger than 1280x960.

Sounds- AMR, iMelody, MP3, audio MP4, 3GPP, audio WMA, audio ASF, audio ACC.

Video- video 3gpp, H264, H.263, H.263-2000 (mpeg4 part 2),

Images- .BMP, .JPG .PNG .GIF

Java platform profile - Profile/MIDP-2.1, Configuration/CLDC-1.1, Java virtual machine is aromaMVM/2.0.2,
Java packages jsr-139 jsr-118 jsr-75 jsr-135 jsr-184 jsr-205 jsr-226 jsr-185.
(missing the really cool smart phone ones like support for an accelerometer).

Hmmm ... If it ever comes to Tracfone I may have to get one to see if I can go further with
it exploration wise than I did with my my LG 420G!

* I was at a Radio Shack Store on Black Friday evening ... and I saw this Net10 phone being advertised on the shelf.

* The phone wasn't there yet, just the price tag-peg .... and it was listed as only being $60.

* I asked the worker if they had any in yet, and he said No ... he said they just put the tags up a few days ago.

* Not bad for only $60 ..... come on Tracfone!, get with it!, your phones suck! (except for the LG 290c of course) ;)

It seems like the LG 900G will have a full HTML browser, but it appears to be EDGE only data, no 3G.
I also hope it is like the picture and does not have that ugly warped Target logo on it. While I love my E71,
I have never cared for carrier logos on the phone I use. Sounds too much like free advertising to me.

Found at Radio Shack in Brattleboro, VT. Was shocked to see it as that store has never carried GSM Trac and Net10 phones.
I was not asked to buy an airtime card to get the phone for $40 (plus 6% VT sales tax, one reason I moved to NH).
By the way, there is no annoying American Movil logo on the front of the phone. I hate their logo. Looks like a warped Target.
Have not opened it yet, but I am liking the look of it. At least there is no ugly logo on it...

Here is a peek at what the LG 900G looks like next to the Nokia E71 and a version of the Samsung R355C
(VM Canada's Link, actually). Will be activating it later so I hope to write a little about it.

Thanks Sweeper, that's a nice side by side. I know folks have wondered about the overall size, and size of
the keyboard - now they have other phones to compare it to! I see the E71 and 900G are about the same
size and the screen size looks to be about the same too. Very good!

I look forward to your review when you get time.
No one has really given an indepth review yet, just bits and pieces, though they have been helpful.
If I had 'lots of use' for a cell phone, I'd consider switching to Net10. It's getting interesting over on Net10...

> Things I would like to see in a review would be camera image quality on the highest settings, and when on the web,
can one actually download something like a .PDF (non supported file type) file and actually save it. (my LG 420 does not)

? = Also I noticed 'Activation required' plastered on the 900's display. I was wondering if that was just on the
home screen or are you able to access the menus (play with it) without the nag? .... As mentioned, I thought
about getting one just to play with it, figure out any secrets, etc. :)

Thanks for the post,

First off, I have never really endorsed a phone, but if you can find the LG 900G for $40,
I highly suggest you pick it up, even if you are only ‘thinking’ of switching to Net10.

Keypad layout:

I feel the keypad is much better laid out on the 900G than it is on the E-71. Keys have a good click when
you press them, lettering on the keys is larger than the E-71 and the backlight is better as well...
Volume rocker is on the left, camera button is on the right. Charging port is on the top left corner and the
microSD car slot is on the bottom left side.

Signal strength:

I have no problems with signal strength and I have full bars with the 900G at home and have
had very good signal with it on the road. It is on par with the E71.

Screen:

You will want to purchase a screen protector because from the top of the keyboard to the top of the
phone is all plastic and it can scratch very easily. Screen is about the same size as the E-71 and you
will have no problem viewing texts, web pages or whatever you want to view. It is very crisp. You can
also use animated images for your wallpaper. The phone comes with 2 flash ‘cartoon’ type files and I
saved one as wall paper and had a cat walking across the screen. You can also have the time in two
different time zones on the main screen of the phone if you desire. You can change the font size to
suit your needs as well.

Games & Apps:

Phone comes with 2 games (Sudoku Café and Word Attack).
Phone has a Facebook app that is already installed and works well.
I have added Bolt Browser and Snaptu to the phone. Bolt works great.
Snaptu works, but the soft keys do not work, so is you use one of the apps,
you basically have to exit and then start it up again to get to another app.
Native browser is good, and I am unsure if it is indeed a full HTML browser.
Web pages seem to load quick, but quicker with Bolt. Will try Opera soon.

Extras:

Calculator, stopwatch, world time, converter, FM radio, alarm and an organizer.
Also noticed that you can back up your text messages on your SD card. Bluetooth is wide open.
I transferred pics and a short video to and from the 900G with no problems.
Camera is a 2MP and has a video recorder as well.

Here are a couple of pics I took with the LG 900G:

Here is a video I took of the phone. No audio as I didn’t speak while filming. I’m a noob at filming cell phones, sorry.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xQ5sJHOyR4

All in all, for $40 I am very impressed. I hate comparing the 900G to the E71 since they are not really in the
same league, but in some respect, the 900G is better, believe it or not. I also think it is better than the T40G
and I really liked that phone as well.

I was indeed able to play around with it even though it showed "Activation Required".
I have not tried the PDF file thing, I'm still having fun with it.

Sweeper - Wow, on the review! I'm surprised in the comparison points between the E71 you are thrilled
with and the LG 900G you just acquired. I was not sure if the 900 would have anything 'up' on the E71.
You are an unbiased phone reviewer, and that is much appreciated. :)

You have an advantage when comparing phones due to your large 'inventory' on hand.

Excellent on pointing out the bluetooth status. I'm sure many would be asking about that. Wow!

Did you use Bolt or Bolt lite? Okay, you used Bolt (saw it in the video).

Thanks for the sample camera phone pics as well.
Enjoyed the winter scene, being I've never been in snow myself. Some ones got the firewood pile and everything.

That is the first time I have seen some one include a video in their phone review.
It did answer some questions and I'm only 37 seconds into the video that has taken
about 10 minutes to download so far, as I'm on dialup. Another 7.5 min of video to go!

In the video, I heard the sound of the vibrate motor as the 900 powered up. That must be a good vibrate!

Putting the 900 through it's paces, you played a video for us. Just prior, it looks like you turned up the volume to maximum.
What I heard sounded like more than adequate, and clean audio from such a small device.

Next, Sweeper went wading through menus - note 'Dirty deeds done dirt cheap' was still playing in the background.
This must be the 'multi task' as advertised.

Hey, now I know what snaptu is about. Thanks!

What capacity is micro SD card you are using with the 900?

When you get a moment, please tell us what is under 'organizer' and 'tools'.

Good job on the review Sweeper!

* * Update - I purchased an LG 900G for myself at a Radio Shack for $40, and did it not require
the purchase of an airtime card to do so. Now I will be able to answer my own questions in time.
Have not activated it yet. Bought an airtime card, oh but must spend the 30 days wisely!

@ Turk - I knew you'd be on the ball to make the LG 900G thread 'official' (subject changed). Thanks!

@ frankl45 - Wow on the $30 LG 900G! ... First $60, then $40, no reports of $30!
I had a feeling this would happen, now I am concerned. If they are that cheap, what's wrong with them?
Am I the only one not thinking this? I'd better get to sleuthing now that I have one, and paid $10 too much. ;)

I'm gathering notes up now as I type, to do some sort of review, my style.

Thanks for sharing and welcome frankl45.

* Sweeper ... thanks for the pictures, video, and review of the LG 900g so far ... it seems to be a nice phone.

* It seems to be a good buy for $60 ... a great buy for $40 ... and an awesome buy if you can get it for $30!

* But like KLM has mentioned above: if it's the best Net10 phone out right now, why is it so cheap right now!?

* I think of two reasons here: (1) there are things wrong with it? ... or ... (2) much better phones are to follow?
- something tells me it might be a little of both...

* Anyways, I could of bought it for $40 at another Radio Shack if I really wanted it, but I feel it'll be on sale again.

* Anyway, thanks to everyone so far for the information on this new phone ... keep it coming! .. ;)
------------------------
* On a side note...

* I am probably going to jump over to Net10 next month, like I have mentioned a few times on here in the past.
* I had my eye on a Samsung r355c at one of my Best Buys for the last month (included the 300min/60service days).

* When it dropped from $100 to $60 two weeks ago, I really started thinking about getting it (there was only 2 left).
* So I got a 10% off coupon off the Internet - then on Christmas Eve, I went to that Best Buy and there was only 1 left!

* So I bought it (with the coupon), and got $6 off ... then with Tax, I got it for $57 out the door ... and I was happy! (lol)
* I've played with it and I think it is a really nice/cool phone ... it grew on me in the last 6 months I've seen it at Walmart.

* The LG 900g may have a little better features than the Samsung r355c, but I LOVE Verizon's coverage as you know.
* So for now, I think I'll go with the Samsung r355c - and just wait for the next best CDMA Net10 phone to come out.

* If and when I do transfer over to the Samsung r355c, I'll do some posting on it in the Samsung r355c Topic thread.
* Ps: ... KLM, you gonna take that "leap of faith" with me and go over to Net10 as well? (lol) ;)

Wow, this subject is getting a lot of views so far. A lot of folks must be wondering about the new LG 900G.
I've not had time to do a review of sorts like I did with my LG 420, but I have been gathering notes on my
LG 900 just in case I get into the review mode.
Actually I have not touched it in like 3 days. It's on, but not activated yep.

Well Turk, With you and I wondering why this phone is so cheap right off the bat, (problems?).
That is why I post as I do. I wanna know!

I can't believe the Samsung 355c runs more than the new LG 900G.
Maybe they think folks will pay more for CDMA based phones? Forgot to drop the price?

I like that everyone likes CDMA .... that leaves more channels open for me on GSM. :D

Turk

* Ps: ... KLM, you gonna take that "leap of faith" with me and go over to Net10 as well? (lol)

That may happen Turk. I like my outdated W260G just fine and I am a creature of habit. Up until a few days ago,
I would have said no, I'd not consider Net10 and that I'm just playing with the LG 900G 'just cause'.

But, I may be 'cutting the cord', and just reply on cell phone, which I use very little as well. If I do, I'd want to make
sure I have enough minutes for those times I might get stuck on hold ordering hardware, or 'eternal tech supporting'
as I like to call it by phone. So I have been thinking about the Net10 'Easy minutes' plan might do the trick.
Minutes supposedly carry over (I hope) and eventually pile up nicely just in case. I can see myself going to Net10
if or when I cut the cord, AND if I like the LG 900G and it's features. If not, the W260G and TF will be fine.

Could this be the first reported LG900G glitch?

Possible glitch with pictures not showing up in My Folder > Pictures.

My LG900G is 5 days new to me so I am still getting used to it. But something occasionally catches me off guard when I am in the Pictures section of my phone.

Pictures, only the recent most ones, (like 3 I just took with camera mode) will not be present when I go look for them in My Folder > Pictures.

I exit the Pictures section and then go right back to My Folder > Pictures. and *poof* They are all there now.

I have observed this issue a few times in just the few days I have had this phone. Now that I know something is not quite right I will 'be at the ready' next time to note what is really going on.

So far, I took a few more pictures, then went to look for them in the pictures folder and they are present. I repeated this two more times and they too are present. Okay so this seems to be an occasional thing. Or maybe I have to do things in the wrong sequence to cause the most recently saved pictures to not show up.

My phone configuration is pretty much stock, for reviewing and glitch seeking purposes. I do have a 4GB micro SD installed, but it is not set to 'Primary storage. ( Settings > Memory Info. > 5. Primary Storage Setting > Handset Memory is checked )

After a while, when this happens again, I will remove the micro SD card, even though it is not being accessed, and see what happens. But this may take time if this is a random problem.

Okay, if anyone notices recently saved pictures by any method are missing, take note of it please. Like I said I would exit the pictures folder, and then come back to pictures and my recent saved pictures were present. See if at random times this happens on your LG900G.

Time will tell if we've found the first glitch.

Updated on 2011 Jan. 2 Original post created on 2011 Jan. 1

Notes about the LG900G

[Ooops you bought it! When opening the box, you'll probably rip it. So much for being able to return it in a new and resellable condition right? :D I found the flap to open the box had two strips of double sided sticky tape inside- rip!

Remove all tags before flight! Look carefully at the phone. You will see little strips of tape all over it. Bottom, sides, top. There is also tape over the self portrait mirror right next to the camera lens. I thought that 'bump' was some kind of light metering feature, until I pulled the tape- duh!

Turk Forum resident The Sweeper pointed out the Tracfone logo is on the back. Why is it a Tracfone logo when it is a Net10 phone? Anyway, look at the back cover of the phone. It looks like one big sticker which the logo is part of. I wonder who will be first to remove the big sticker to get rid of the logo? Maybe some WD-40 would help get the residue off...Hmmm....

What I tell people who have problems with techRead the book! Yes, I read the book that came with it before doing anything first. It reads like all the other Trac/Net1o manuals. Little to say. I even tread the tems and conditions, where they explain many questions people have about minutes, etc.

Anyway, Ah- Something new in the book! In section 3.11 says the LG900G is a "smartphone", and yes it's in bold in the book. The first thing I ask myself is, how does one define 'smartphone?' TF/Net10 seems to relate smartphone to the LG900G's multitasking, multimedia, and game/application handling abilities.

smartphone Multi-tasking
Posted Image
When you press the multi-task button, located just under the SEND key you will see (circled) the above. To switch tasks, use the left and right navigation keys then hit the OK button.

I was in the Applications screen when I took this screenshot. The 4 icons in the multi-task box represent the home screen, main menu, a game I was playing, and highlighted is an application for gathering info (like system properties) about the phone.

(Items marked 1.-Signal (not activated yet), 2. - Task icon, 3. - Sound profile (setting 1), 4. - SD card instaled, 5. - 3 segment battery Icon, 6. Multi-task switch to box.)

Back to multi-tasking...Right now I have a few items loaded up as indicated under the 'multitasking key/window'. For the last couple days there they sit. (battery not running down any faster that I notice) The phone is currently at the home screen. One of the items I have under multitask is a benchmark application. I 'switched' to the home screen right in the middle of the benchmark. What the LG900 has done is put the application on hold. That is, the bench mark application is not running at this time but is in resident memory. I can switch back to it and resume.

So, is this really multitasking? Does the system clock in your computer stop ticking because you are not looking at it? I know, I'm getting technical. It should be called multi-pausing :)

Really, there is nothing wrong with this concept of multi-tasking. Case in point (this makes the 900 cool)...You are playing a game, and the phone rings. You can answer and the game will be on hold, just the way it shuold be. Of course there is that text message you never finished an hour ago that you switched from to play the game. Just hit the multitask key and you can switch back to that text message, while your game is still on hold. Hopefully the caller is still not on hold, as there goes your minutes!

smartphone Multimedia Yes the 900G takes pictures, video (dinky ones), music (MP3), FM radio, and voice recorder which sounds good on playback. Have not tried the radio. Play back of an .MP3 sounded pretty good to me for a small speaker, you can't expect much, but I felt there is more than adequate audio.

smartphone Games and Applications To me, this category, and how it is dealt with is what makes for a smartphone. The games and applications that will work on the LG900G must be J2ME (Java2 Microedition) or known also as 'Java mobile' based. J2ME has been around quite some time, and so you will find a lot of old games and apps that work and seem primitive, and may not fit the screen right.

Typically the .JAR file carry all the app will need to make it go includes fixed sized images. Look for, where possible, games that match your phones resolution, so the graphics will fit right. If you come across the right sites, you'll see the game you want is downloadable for -different- screen resolutions. (example 160x120, 176x220, etc. some where in the title description usually).

(Take note here) There are two resolutions (actually called canvas size) to look for where possible when downloading. 320x198 and 320x222 (odd sizes). The 320x198 is like a windowed screen where the area either at the top, where all the status indicators are or at the bottom where 'Menu' and 'Browser' are displayed, (or both top and bottom) are not counted as a viewable area. But some applications can take up the 'full canvas'. For that we need to know the full canvas size, which is 320x222 on the LG900G. This information is a Turk Forum exclusive so take note!

Okay, still going on about 'smartphones' now....

What they did not mention under section 3.11 as they touted the 900 being a smart phone, is anything to do with the internet experience. I think a great browsing experience on a phone would lend to a smart phone. As I have not activated my phone yet, I can't tell you what that is like, but by default it can't be that good, for one reason that is known to me.

The browser (Teleca) that comes with the 900, is similar as in the LG420 which I do have lots of experience with in that the web page size limit is about 300k. Go over that amount and you will get a message about 'Insufficient memory!' or something like that. I'm telling you now, get opera-mini or Bolt for a browser, install it, use it.

Your browsing experience will be much better, but they both create problems that the default browser does not. Opera-mini and Bolt mangle the web page (in my opinion) that you want to see due to the trans-coding service which serves up your experience faster. By example, to get your data to you faster, they strip out the animated .GIF files. You see the first frame of the animation. I really need that animation in tact when I view a certain weather site to see how fast a storm is coming as I walk my dog. This was one of the main reasons why I wanted to use the browser in a phone.

Buy using these browsers that depend on transcoder servers means if you access your bank account, it goes through another server to be processed.

I just walked by my 900 on an end table and it grabs me every time. "Hey, I finally have one of THOSE type of phones!" (uni-body QWERTY, smart looking)

Moving on....

The 900's interface is really snappy. The LG420 is faster than the 600, and I'm happy to say the 900 is faster still than the 420. Who likes to wait? Now activating the camera still has a delay before it is ready. Flipping through the collection of pictures, even 2 megapixel sized ones is fast.

The screen is definitely readable in Florida sunlight. Though not activated yet, I did do a mock text message and I could see it just fine.

I don't like the charge complete notification. Two very loud dings. Welp, I complained that the LG420's notifications (charged, low battery, etc.) were very faint, now I have the other extreme on the 900. I guess I can't be pleased!

I also do not like the confirmation tone. By 'confirmation' I mean, change a setting and you press OK, and a confirmation box pops up and then 'Bong Bing!' I wish I could change the sound but it is not possible. If it offends you too, you can turn the confirmation tone off, just go to Settings > Phone profiles and change the confirmation tone to off. Also if you do not like the tone when a key is pressed you can change it to a DTMF tone (telephone keypad tones) or turn it off as well.

I also feel that the boxes that pop up to confirm a change, etc. stay on a bit too long. In some situations you can hit 'OK' and get rid of that box and get on with your phone experience.

If the phone is locked (can't hit a key and go off to who knows where) and you proceed to unlock it, I feel this process takes too long before that 'Unlocked!' box goes away an you can begin using the phone. The unlock sequence takes about 3 seconds. Does not sound long, but...We're all different.

Now, about the dialog boxes staying on too long. This should not put you off from buying the 900. High speed button/navigating users will be bothered, but will get used to it when thinking about the cost of the phone and no-contract service.

More to come,

There is just some things we do not like about Tracfone/Net10 phones, like the right soft key that you might accidentally hit launches the web browser and there goes your minutes. Here are my gripes about the LG900G so far:

-That the LG900 is not for Tracfone ;(

-Right soft key at the home screen activates the browser.

-When you go to Pictures The first thing highlighted is 'Buy Graphics'. I was too quick on the keys and I hit that. My 900 tried to go to the web but oh, my phone is not activated yet. Ha-Ha!

-When you go to sounds. The first thing highlighted is 'Download ring tones'. Don't get too quick on the keys like I did!

- Default sounds. Boy I really don't like them on this phone. In this case I prefer the default sounds of my LG420.

After the 3rd recharge, my LG900G lasted 20 days on total standby. The phone audibly notified the battery was low for 20 minutes, at 3 minute intervals, then just died.

After the second recharge, my LG900G lasted 13 days and 3 hours completely on standby. :O WOW! (the first charge lasted 5 days)

That's 3 days longer than my LG420G, 7 days longer than the LG600G, and about a day longer than my Moto W260G (all Tracfones).

Like my experience on the first charge, the time span between the audible low battery warning and the phone completely dying was only 15 minutes.

It took 2 hours and 25 minutes to recharge after that.

Battery test while phone remains active
My next test was to see how long the LG900G battery would last while the phone played Tetris. With plenty of audio (music), screen lit but in reduced brightness mode, and game running, my phone lasted 17 hours and 30 minutes, Again, :O WOW! In comparison, my LG420 ran the same game and only lasted 5 hours, which is would I would expect.

The LG900G seems to be a battery sipper, where possible :)

I do not test battery life with phone calls. There are too many variables with the transmitter varying in power as needed. But the above observations could be considered a base line for what is possible out of this phone.

A couple more observations
At the 13 hour mark into my last test with Teris, I checked the battery indicator and it displayed all 3 bars still. That was the last time I check it. at 17.5 hours the phone died without any warning. The battery may have miscalculated as it is new (That happens with gas gauge IC's (for batteries)), and should correct if the chip is a decent one. It was the third charge afterall.

Power consumption during charge
Upon charging for a 4th time, I made some notes on current consumption during charge.

Before I did that I noticed my phone was not fairly immediately powering back on as life poured back into it. Current drain from the power source was reduced during this time. 30 seconds later my phone came to life. I have seen this in other units so, that is just how it goes.

Phone powered up, and screen went dark, current drain from a 13.8 volt source was 350mA. This is higher than what my other phones have drawn off the power supply.

Though the LG900G has a higher charge current, it still takes the same amount of time to charge my LG600G and LG420- all having a 900mAH battery. The 900's battery has a longer current roll off time.

And, I have observed that like my LG420, the LG900 does not always audibly tell you it is fully recharged. You'd have to check the screen. Then again, on my 420, some times I check the screen and it does not tell me either. But I would notices the outline of the battery icon is no longer blinking. I dunno if this is true or not of the LG900 (visual notification). Time will tell.

Another note- Like the LG600G and LG420G, the LG900G only draws 550mA out of the 900mAH battery before the low battery warning sounds. So the battery is never really 'drained'. This is nominal in order to protect the battery from being damaged, or explode, due to recharging, as it ages.

Old info but some still useful
First charge lasted 5 full days. During that time My phone is not activated yet. I spent 3 or 4 hours playing with the phone, using blue tooth, installing and trying apps, running bench marks, taking pictures, general poking around.

(First charge/discharge) The time between the low battery warning and the phone shutting down due to low power was only 10 minutes! Maybe after a few charge cycles this will improve. I hope so, I am used to having at least a few hours between low battery and total shutdown. I will update this section after a few chare cycles.

When the low battery loud 'BINK-BINK-BINK' alarm sounds a box will pop up and then disappear super fast. The box tells you the battery is low. Also the battery icon blinks as usual to indicate low battery.

Recharge time took 2 hours and 25 minutes.

When charge complete you will hear 2 loud dings.

When the battery is low, you will hear 3 loud dings.

The Battery for the LG 900G is rated at 900mAH. It is not compatible with the LG420 or LG600 battery. The contacts are different for the 900.

The supplied charger for the LG900G is 5.1 Volts @ 700mA. The charger connection type is micro USB.

NUMBERED ARE MENUS BACK
Folks liked how all the menu options in the LG600G had numbers beside them. Instead of scrolling down to option 3, you could just press 3. When the LG420, the successor to the 600 came out, only a couple of menus had options selectable by pressing a digit. Some were not happy about that.

Good news. All LG900G menu options are selectable by pressing a number, just like the LG600G!

SEND SMS TO E-MAIL
There is no menu option (like with the LG420) to send a SMS via e-mail, . X400, or FAX. (Seriously, no big deal). The 900 instead takes it to a more integrated level.

If you have added some e-mail addresses, in your contacts, all, you need to do is pick a contact, and scroll left or right until the e-mail address appears and select it. The LG900G knows to pull up the message screen, insert the e-mail address in the TO: field so all you have to do is type on your QWERY keyboard and send! Very nice. Here is a screen shot of the Contacts.

BLUETOOTH – Faster than ever
Data transfer speed for the LG900G measured on average 53.5kbs on my particular setup. Under the same test conditions and same files transferred the LG420 in comparison is 35kbs, and the LG600G, which is the oldest of the 3 phones, did about 11kbs.

TRANSFER CONTACTS
Yes, you can transfer your contacts to the LG900G. I'm there are multiple ways to do so, like place the .VCF files on a micro SD, then select them.

Some time ago I had saved the contacts in my LG420 off to my PC. So, to save time I just sent my contacts from PC, via bluetooth, to the LG900G. The LG900G picked up on what I was doing right away and put those .VCF files right into the contacts section, ready for use. Awesome!

GAMES AND APPLICTIONS

Games and applications must be J2ME (Java mobile) based. The file extension will always be .JAR (do not install a .JAD) You are not limited to finding files only at getjar.com. Here are a few other successful places I have tried:

http://handheld.softpedia.com - Huge collection. Look for the 'free' tab on the top right of screen (free ware filtering). And look for games that are Platform: Java, and ignore the ones for iPhone, Blackberry, etc.

http://mobile360.org - Huge collection. Lots of them are for smarter phones. And some games that look really good, end up having to pay for after you have installed it (wants to phone home and burn minutes)

http://sourceforge.net You'll find a lot of other sites will point their links to sourceforge.

http://www.mobilerated.com They want you to tell them what our phone is before having a look. This might be too restrictive, so I picked a better dumb phone. This site can be hard to deal with. Don't stress over it and move onto another site.

http://java.mob385.com Older stuff for older phones. Has not been updated in forever, but I found a few things of interest.

Speed increments over the generations The LG420 ran games and apps way faster than the LG600. And the new LG900G seems to be faster still. Yet strangely, all the benchmarks show much poorer results for the 900. Perhaps this phone is beyond those old benchmarks to deal with.

The first thing you will notice that is faster (over the Lg420) is when you actually select applications to see the list you have of apps installed. There is a pause before you see that list. Not so with the LG900. As soon as I select 'open' to view my list of applications, it's instantaneous. Awesome!

Good news, you do not need to 'hack' files within the .JAR file to get them to work, as you need to with the LG420G. Just download, install, and if it works- great!

(little bit of history) The 420 is rigged so that it would only accept files you purchased through Tracfone/Net10/ST. That would mean, no better browser or cool games, with out a small adjustment.

When playing games, you can use the side volume keys to control volume. Fantastic!

Gaming audio quality. My favorite game to evaluate quality is a version of Tetris. On my old LG600G, the game sound is perfect. Wonderful low frequencies. The 420, had no lows and is tinny (cheap sounding). The same game on the LG900G, can be played unbelievably loud from such a small device. But the lows I once enjoyed on the 600, are not present in the 900. Emphasis seems to be on the mids. It does sound good though. I believe the difference in phones is the in the ‘chip’ and not the speaker.

RECOGNIZED FILE FORMATS
The LG900G recognizes .PNG, .GIF (animated too), .JPG, .MIDI, .WMA, .MP3, .AMR, .SWF .VCF .JAR (others?)

If you transfer one of these files to your phone, it will automatically sort them out, placing them in the proper area. (except .JAR) By Example, send a .JPG to the phone and it will place it under the ‘Pictures’ folder.

Files not supported: .HTML (when not in browser), .PDF, .TXT, .WMV, .AVI, .MPEG, .XVID, Divix, and others of course.

FM RADIO
The FM radio feature requires headphones (3.5mm jack) to be plugged in to function. If not, the 900 will let you know. The headphones double as an antenna.

Connecting headphones will get you a headphone symbol at the top of the screen, so log as they are plugged in. When plugged in you will hear a soft 'Bing'. When you unplug the headphones it's another story. It's a loud, terrible, startling sound. It repeatedly scares my dog even. The sound is very short. It sounds like the beginning of screeching tires. What do you do when you hear screeching tires as some one slams on the brakes? You get startled!

I tell ya...No, I can't I can't tell you what I'd like to the person that came up with all these silly, irritating default sounds for this phone here on the forums. Good golly...

Anyway, back to the FM radio. You do have the choice of listening to the radio by headphones or the phones internal speaker.

I plugged in some (cheap) headphones (not ear buds) that came with a $20 portable CD player from years ago. I am very pleased to say audio is plentiful and sounds fantastic to me, if you can get reception (hint), even on cheap headphones! I was very surprised.

FM Radio reception.
Gadgets like these usually do a poor job with reception. One reason being is they are not proper receivers (lack of parts) compared to you home or car stereo. And unfortunately the LG900G is no exception. I did not pick up any stations inside my home when using the auto scan.

So I went outside and hit 'auto scan' (search). The hiss will mute as it scans, which is very quick by the way. The scan signal level threshold is so high that I only picked up the 2 closest stations to me, which are about 25 miles away. The rest of the stations are 50+ miles away. If you live in a city with lots of stations, you might do fine, or on the other hand, the receiver may overload and you hear distortions. I used manual tuning to pick up those distant stations. I could hear them, but they were noisy. My other proper FM receivers do much better.

For the tech folks, receiver selectivity is definitely poor. There is probably no front end and just a bunch of mixers. I don't live in a big city so I can't speak to overload. Tune slightly off frequency and listen to a....motorboating of sorts. I believe I also head a few 'birdies'.

For the non-tech, when you do get good reception, the FM radio features and audio is fantastic. It's simple to use. You can 'minimize' the FM Radio screen and go about your business (it goes to multi-task for future retrieval). But there are some things you cannot do whole the radio is play, like use an application. Well...There goes the 'smartphone'.

Here's a series of screenshots regarding the LG900G'FM Radio':

The FM Radio screen
Posted Image
As you can see, it's a simple layout. Annotations as follows:

1.Signal strength icon - My phone is not activated yet.

2.Headphone icon - Headphones have been detected/inserted.

3.FM Radio icon - The FM radio is on.

4.Sound profile icon - Default sound profile icon (ring tone, key, tone, etc.)

5.Micro SD icon - Micro SD memory card installed.

6.Battery life icon - Three-segment battery indicator.

7.Audio output type icon - Radio outputs to headphones or internal speaker. Headphones currently selected.

8.Up/Down arrows - Does not do anything. But you can use the up and down on the navigation pad to change programmed channels.

9.Current channel number - Current user defined channel.

* Label your channels One thing not shown on this screenshot is that you can do is give the channel a description, which will then appear directly above the frequency readout.

FM Radio features

- Store up to 50 channels. - That should be plenty.

Posted Image

- Minimize. This option hides the FM Radio screen in the multi-task section, leaving you free to do other things while the radio plays. But, there are limits as to what you can do while the radio plays.

Posted Image

When you minimize the FM radio, and you are at the home screen, here is what you will see. This is only the top half shown of the home screen:
Posted Image
Annotations: 1.Headphone plugged in (duh!) 2.FM radio is on (duh again!) 3.Looks like a 'play' triangle, dunno what it represents 4. Current station frequency.

- Channel list. View all your user-defined channels.
Posted Image

- Auto-scan. Once pressed, audio mutes, and radio searches for next station.

- Listen via speaker / Headset. Toggles sound output.

... And other options will appear depending on what you are doing.

Tip: - You can also enter in the frequency you want to listen to using the keyboard. Do not enter the decimal point (102.5 -no), just the digits (1025 -yes).

First off, great post. Very good information.

I have one question, what method did you use to put bolt browser on the phone?
I tried a couple sites on the phone, and I got the out of memory error. Any help is appreciated.

Sorry for spelling, and thanks in advance.

xry75, and to all -

HOW TO INSTALL BETTER BROWSER WHEN YOU GET 'AN OUT OF MEMORY' ERROR

(recap)
If you are trying to download games, applications, or just visit the web, by using the browser that came with the phone - don't.
The maximum allocated memory is way too low and thus the error.

So to get those games, apps, including a better browser for your phone, you need to download the .JAR files to your PC first.

Then transfer .JAR files either via a bluetooth connection between your PC and phone, or put the files
on a micro SD card, then insert the card into your phone.

Have fun!

I don't have my LG 900g activated yet. If I run either opera or bolt it will halt because no connection is possible.

To get around the untrusted pop up, see if you can download the 'signed' version of each applet.

I'm having another issue. I'm trying to use mp3 as a ringtone, its a small file 1.2mb, it tells me it is too big.
So, I converted it to wma, all I could do at the time, now its only 328kb, the phone still says its too big.
Some of the default ringtones are larger than this. Does anyone have any insight? It would be most helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Hi xry75,

The maximum ring tone file size cannot exceed 300kb.

This is also true of a few other Tracfone/Net10 models.

C'mon! You can squish that file down some more! Push! ! :D

Have fun with your LG900,

HELP! Can someone please tell me if the LG 900 displays the sender's name or number when one receives a
text message BEFORE they open the text? I am considering buying the 900 but will not until I have an answer.
I must have this feature and do not want to purchase the phone to discover that it doesn't display sender's name
when a text is received. I just bought a Samsung T401g, which does NOT display the sender's name or number
when receiving a text until AFTER the text is opened, so I am returning it.

I am new to cell phones - so I don't know much, this is my first one, that I'm interested in anything other than limited phone use.
I'm looking to be able to use a spread sheet of some sort (installed microcalc) and a little sports and weather, etc.

Got the phone activated this afternoon and am trying to figure it out.
This post may be old news to most here, but may help some.

This phone comes with no manual at all, got a services guide that was trying to sell services.

I called to ask what size micro SD cards it could use ... no definitive answer:
they suggested 1GB then 8, 4, and 2 ... as a personal suggestion, not 900 specifications.

Still don't know how to turn the speaker phone on.

I have received one text from someone on my contact list and one telling me about a voice mail:
one had the name, the other the number ..... doakes, I think you will be ok.

I was trying to figure out how to transfer apps on usb ... didn't know where the usb was, couldn't find that,
and then took a chance and found out the the battery charge port, using micro usb works as the usb connection
to the computer as well, and pasted some apps and mp3.

@ doakes - I have not activated my LG 900G yet, so I cannot give you a 100% answer.
But, usually, the only way a text senders name or number is presented before opening the text is
if that name or number is programmed in your contacts already.

It's like voice caller ID.
If you subscribe to a land line service with caller ID, usually you get a name and number on the ID.
But, on a cellphone that comes with 'caller ID', all you get is a number (unless it's in your contacts already).

Hopefully, some one with an activated 900, (like The Sweeper) will stop by in a couple days and be able to fill you in.

@ huck - Welcome to your first cell phone ... Quite a dandy.
But the 900G is not a computer. It does not do spread sheet or microcalc, but does have a calculator.
It also will not do word processing, run windows apps, etc...

When you have time, have a look in my previous posts here where I mention what the phone does execute.
Essentially, the only 'appable' that they claim is stuff that uses Java2 microedition (J2ME). In short, no power house stuff.
I'm not knocking the phone, but it is what it is and does only what it is programed to do.

As far as 'a little sports and weather' ... via what media? News web sites yes, videos definitely not.
There are no J2ME video players. Again, not a PC (or TV) :)

As in my previous posts, for web surfing, I'd strongly suggest not using the default browser and acquire
Bolt or Opera-mini for a browser. The default browser has a major limit on page size limit (like 300k).

Phone comes with no manual, that is correct. All Tracfone/Net10 phones never come with a manual, nor does the
actual manufacturer support the phone. By lack of support this keeps the cost of the phones down. This is why folks
like Turk start up forums ad we try to support ourselves. :) Check back here as I'm sure I'll post more about my 900.
I don't have time to play with it right now and so I've not activated it. So my experience is not quite complete.

Hint: This phone was in another market listed as a LG GW300.
You can search for that and get more info, although the GW300 had functions not available in the 900.

Which SD card size to use. Well .. Again no manual. I believe if you put too large of a card (like 8 and 16GB) this is
issues with a long hang before it becomes usable for the first time. And people are saying with high capacity cards
they had to turn of the phone before inserting.

I myself have a 4GB card in it and I think that is what the GW300 specs at 4GB.
I can insert mine while the phone is on and have no problems. Also no long pause issue.

Speakerphone - Ah, that one gets users of other models too.
The speakerphone option only becomes available when you place a call and it actually connects.
After that look at your screen and you'll see a little yellow speaker. Press 'OK' to toggle the speakerphone on/off.

Good gob at finding the 'micro USB' port for your needs.

@ both - Sorry I could not help much on this one. Some day I will get it activated and play with the rest of it...

ALTERNATIVE MANUAL FOR THE LG900G

It's true there is not manual as you'd expect for the LG 900G.
But, there is a user manual for the LG GW300, which is the same phone, just sold in a different market.

There will be some differences. It will not explain absolutely everything as it is a basic user guide (for beginners?),
but it is a little better than what came with the phone.
It at least tells you what the icons are that you will see at the top of the screen. :)

I think I will edit my first post and put it a the top too...

LG900G battery statistics updated

Things have been quiet here, maybe everyone is enjoying their new X-Mas phones?

I updated my post #20 regarding battery statistics for the LG900G.
In short, I found that my LG900G went 13+ days (on standby) on just the 2nd recharge.

When the battery was fully charged again, I had it play 'Tetris' to keep the processor, screen, and
audio busy for 17.5 hours until the phone died. That's 3.5x longer hold up time than the LG 420!

* xry75 .... I don't own this phone, but maybe someone here who does can help you out.
* But in the meantime, when your looking at text messages, is there an Option above one of the soft keys?
* Most of the time under the Option button there is a place to select "delete all messages" ... see if you have that.

* HRJ86 .... yes, you can use this phone with both Net10's normal Airtme cards or Unlimited Plan cards.
* The LG 900g is so far available at Net10.com - Radio Shacks - and Best Buy Stores ... $60 at all three places.

* Ps: special thanks to The Sweeper and KLM for the reviews and help so far on this new LG 900g phone. ;)

I got this phone, and it has a lot of issues, but it's a lot nicer than many of their other phones.

Memory Cards and USB interface (serious issues):
Bought 16 GB micro SDHC card (patriot brand, class 4) writes at 4 megs/s, reads at 8 megs/s in notebook cardslot.
- Phone refused to read 16gb formatted fat32 card properly initially, would randomly crash, or would hang on startup, producing green screen. Would take a long time to recognize the card when inserted, or sometimes would not recognize it at all.
- Solution ended up being as follows: Partition the card down to 8gb (16 won't work, then format the card as FAT32 with 16k allocation size as 8gb)
This fixed all latency on the card. (I tried various allocation sizes, and also 2gb, 4gb, 6gb, 8gb FAT32). Card works properly now, can be ejected and is recognized instantly, no need to reboot, phone boots up at normal speed.
- USB and Bluetooth transfer rates are horrid. I have tried on multiple computers, and they begin around 1.5-2MB/s and drop to around 400-500kb/s.
- Phone recognizes improper amount of memory in the device when you look at memory available, it says 3GB inserted, 300mb available. However, when it does other functions its estimates of camera shots, video/audio recording length is correct. When you plug the drive in to USB/OBEC mode it properly mounts the proper size of the SDHC card and the onboard 16mb FS.

*edit* - Had to reformat the card in linux to make 8gb 32kb cluster size fat32 partition. Not sure how to partition a SDHC card on windows, computer management/storage doesn't have any options for partitioning. The phone is unable to function properly beyond the 8gb range. It can write data to the card if it is 16gb like photos or whatever, but it can't read contents properly, it just shows folders and file names with random ascii characters and they are inaccessible. Perhaps this will be fixed in a future firmware update, but I doubt it. I also tried making two partitions on the card, but it only detects data on the first. If you also were foolish enough to buy a 16gb card and can't get it to work, download a linux live cd (like ubuntu) and burn it to CD or USB flash drive, install Gparted, and you should be able to easily do what you need to do.

Music player:
- Takes a VERY long time to load as it loads your library into memory. It does this EVERY TIME you access it. There is no cache file generated for some stupid reason. Somebody should talk to LG about this. Expect to wait approximately 30s-1m per GB of music you have. I had ~ 6gb of music on the card and it took about 4 minutes to allow me to play a single MP3 from the music player.
- Note that you can still play single files by manually navigating through the file manager. If you go to "sound" it will just list all of your music (up to 1000 files) without folders, it takes 20s or so to load. Or you can go to "my files" > "memory card" > then select where you have your music, and view by folder, then play tracks that way.
- It will play songs and shuffle works, it will play everything in the folder, so you can kind of make playlists this way (either have one folder as an album, or as a mixed CD). Be careful not to have ANY other files in the folders - no images, html files, m3u playlist files - because it will stop and try to read it as a music file and say unreadable, and your music will stop playing. In windows 7, I just navigate to my music folder on the SDHC card after I transfer my music and in the search box enter "size:<1 MB" which locates all small files like pictures - as I have no songs under 1 meg, and I delete them all. Make sure you delete the thumbnails hidden file too that windows creates, because that can cause issues too.

Locking functions are bad:
- There is no way to lock the browser, and it is the right soft key, which you use A LOT
- The only way to lock the phone so it won't butt-dial in your pocket, requires you to use a softkey combination unlock, which ends up requiring you to press a softkey followed by the RIGHT soft key. If you press the right soft key twice, you will enter the browser (and use your minutes).

Camera:
- Very decent quality, 1600 x 1200 maximum resolution, fixed focus.
- Doesn't support zoom at maximum resolution (it's digital zoom), so loower rez it can "zoom" though no idea why you would want to, mabye if you have no memory card and want to send a SMS message.
- Supports brightness control & effects like sepia/invert/etc.
- Video recorder is 320x200 resolution @ 15 fps (I think, the encoding) but it seems like much less fps, more like 5
- Video recorder supports audio recording
- Both video recorder and camera can save directly to SDHC card

Video:
- Supports 3GP/MP4/H.264
- 320x240 max rez, it will not resize larger videos, so you can't like download something from youtube and throw it on the phone, you have to transcode.
- Video is very watchable for what it is, even at 15fps.
- 2 hour 17 min movie letterboxed @ 3GPP - MPEG-4, 512kbps, 320x240, 30fps @450 bitrate, mp3 22050/96kbps stereo was only 460 MB
- To Fast Forward media, hold Shift (next to mail icon) and then hold down the left or right arrow (next to OK button). You won't see the seek bar if a video is full screen. Also works on audio files.

User ringtones:
- Limited to 300kb in size, any format that is supported by the phone
- I think this is so they can sell more ring tones or to support their legacy store, mp3 is not the best option (you have to use VBR/mono optimized/30s or so to make it fit), WMA or another format is better and smaller. Strange since they have built in ringtones over 500k.

Java applications are a mixed batch:
- The OS warns you about the application attempting to connect to the internet.
- You can select individual java apps and go to preferences - always ask / always deny internet access.
- You CAN NOT ALLOW java applications to access the filesystem (from what I can figure). This means, no java based music player to make up for LG's shortcomings, and no ebook reader, or other such complicated java apps.
- Java application JAR size is limited to ~3mb (possibly larger) bu no larger than 4mb. Can't install large dictionaries, and since you can't load external files, you can't just use a viewer and load it that way.
- 3d games don't work so hot, they run really slow (processor in the phone is really slow) but hey- it's a feature phone, NOT a smart phone, even though net10 says it is.

Calendar:
- limits to do/appointments/holiday markers/memos to about 100-200 entries each.
- supports VCS format (but it's a weird format, you can export and import, but it exports each entry as a single VCS file and starts over again inside of the VCS file, if you open it in a text editor you will see) Makes it hard to use calendar software to import/export, unless a plugin is written or different software I don't know about. I had to search/replace some strings to make my VCS edited holidays file readable for import by the phone.
- some errors when importing VCS data, and it will get the end year wrong on ALL day events (randomly) marking them for years 2099, so you have to manually change them to the year you want.
- supports annually repeating events
- can tell the calendar to delete all previous/expired events (so you don't have to go back manually and do it)

Accessories:
- Standard packaging DOES NOT include a memory card or data cable.
- USB Type A/Micro-B is the smaller standard usb cable that most older cellphones do not use, this one uses it. You can try your luck with a cable, but I had bad data rates, and if you have bluetooth, you can send files over that just as easy.
- Buy whatever SD card you can get cheapest, but don't worry about speed or capacity, the device can't handle either. Just aim above class 2 and above 2 gb. Class 2 is dreadfully slow, and 2gb isn't that much room for music/movies and such, and they are so cheap now you'd pay more for shipping than the card. Also don't buy retail. I think I paid 30$ online for a 16gb class 4 card at newegg.com, however you can get class 6 cards that are 8gb for around 16$, which is a much better buy for this phone, or a 4gb class 4 for around 8. Just make sure you get a USB adapter or regular SDHC sleeve so that you can transfer data quickly with your laptop/pc because the phone is SUPER SLOW (like SDHC class 1 slow).

Some minor hacks/firmware revisions and it would be a great feature phone, nearly as good as some of the older smart phones.
The slow bluetooth/usb transfer may be a driver/firmware problem but it's unlikely that it will be fixed.

Firmware updates (or Patches :D) could make this a great phone if some one were to:
- Remove the browser link @ softkey.
- Cache the music library for faster loading times.
- Allow J2ME file access options.

All in all, it's a great phone for $60.

Hello everyone! ... New to the forum and about this phone.
Anyways, I was wondering if the LG 900G is on Net10's Unlimited Plan?
And if so, where can I purchase this phone at?

If you are in the US you can order it online, use promotional codes that are around for 3-5$ additional off.
They have free shipping on orders over 20$. I think mine was like 61$ shipped after tax~

Also, you can use the new monthly 25/50(unlimited) plans or the old plans with this phone.
Oh, you can transfer your service from an old net10 phone too if you want, it just takes them up to 72hr to process.
I had them do that today, the lady said she gave me 10 minutes and 30 days, no idea why when I was just transferring
service, probably some kind of extension or courtesy to the starter minutes you get when you buy a new phone.

*EDIT*
Only took them 12 hours to transfer service, and they gave added 10 minutes and 60 days to my current plan.
Also my texting rate changed to .25 minutes per text
(used to be .5).
The last airtime minutes I added was 1500 for 180 days ($100). The tech on the phone said that the texting rate
changes on the new phone only with certain plans, so I'm not sure which ones qualify for it or not.

Oh, and I heard the internet browser on this phone was bad, and that you have to
install java/opera to get one that works well, but I haven't bothered, because I don't plan on surfing.

Thank you very much! ... the information was well needed everyone. :D

Now I can go about getting the phone on the Unlimited Plan being it's what I use. I always text and it would
cost me more to go out every week to get minutes just to talk to everyone I know and also talk to my dad.

If anyone has found out how to encode video in H.264 let me know, I can't get the phone to read it.
Also, I get an error with the video recorder trying to save to external memory, it just creates a 2kb file
and then freezes and stops recording.

If you find out any other hidden key shortcuts post them here (like video fast forward).
There are probably other hotkeys for like add to playlist (when in list mode). shuffle/repeat, etc.

# (j) toggles fullscreen for videos.

Oh and you can use animated GIF for wallpaper.

Does anyone know if it's possible to import contacts to this phone via the USB cable or microSD card?

My old Nokia phone had software that let me back up my contacts to my laptop via the USB cable and I want to
transfer those contacts to the LG 900g. I was hoping the LG could sync to my computer in a similar way - or that
I could use the SD card to transfer contacts. But I can't find a way to do either one. Am I missing something?

My laptop does not have bluetooth ... but if I borrowed one that did, would that work?

Thanks,

You may be able to - Net10 has tampered with the firmware and disabled the USB modem/communication service (can't send). They don't want people tethering to the phone and using it for unlimited internet on their computer (like if they have the $50 plan). However, I heard that many of these functions still work over bluetooth. You can try to connect the phone over USB and sync contacts (mine shows up with the LG comm service when I select DATA MODE, instead of USB MASS STORAGE) so try that first. If it won't work for you, try over bluetooth. I have no contacts to import, so I have no way to test.

When I plug in my LG 600 from Net10 into my laptop it is also disabled for USB modem, but when I connect to it over bluetooth, it allows me to use it as a modem (so I can tether). I assume you can do the same with the LG 900g. Apparently Net10 isn't THAT smart, but I could be wrong - and depending on the firmware version ... different parts of the phone may be disabled.

Found an article that confirms my suspicions: USB Drivers for LG 900g
Quote:

You'd get more luck out of the Bluetooth connection than the USB connection, the modem AT commands have been disabled to prevent tethering. You can you the PC Suite 3 program to back up contacts via bluetooth.

Note that the LG software/update tool can still SEE the phone when you turn it to DATA mode, so perhaps JUST the modem AT commands are disabled, and there is some other method it uses to send/receive contacts (LG may have their own contact sync program you have to download to achieve this). Obviously not everything in DATA mode is disabled, because you can still communicate with the phone, and send firmware updates.

Try this:
LG outlook Sync: http://www.lg.com/us/mobile-phones/mobile-support/mobile-lg-outlook-sync.jsp

There is a modem driver install file on the site, you can try that.
When I plugged in my phone however, I was directed to download B2CAppSetup by windows 7,
which is their update tool (probably comes with the USB modem driver):

@ mes - You asked if it was possible to import contacts to the LG 900G by bluetooth if you borrowed a computer to do it.

Yes contacts in .VCF format can be transferred to and from the LG900G via bluetooth. I did just that with mine.
When the files arrive on the 900, it knows what to do with them and places it in your contacts automatically.

Also, you can transfer contacts from phone to phone, provided both have bluetooth. I've done that too.

Hi all.
I got this phone for my daughter for Xmas from Straight Talk directly and she gets unlimited text/calls/net for 45 a month.
I was not aware of the fact that she would need a Micro SD card or cable, nor the fact that this had an MP3 on it.
So, now she wants to put music on it. Fine, ok, but guess what, no way to do that unless you buy a Micro SD card.

So, I just bought an 8 mb Micro SD card and it came with a USB reader.
Do I need to still buy a cable to connect the phone to the computer?

After she puts some music on this new Micro SD card, to add more music at a later date, do we just put the
card back into the reader and plug that into the computer and it just adds to the Micro SD card?
It does not write over what we already put on the Micro SD card?

Please be easy with me. I am an idiot when it comes to this stuff.

My question is basically do I still need a cable?

Does the card get wiped out each time we put more music on it?

P.s. It just occurred to me that some would think I have the card in front of me. I ordered the 8 mb Micro SD
just now, 10 minutes ago, so have to wait to get it. I just wanted to order the cable now too if I still need to.

Thanks!!!

Hello zoomo,

Answer you need - Being the micro SD card comes with a 'USB reader', no you do not need to buy a cable.

SD card plugs into 'reader', reader plugs into PC. Music is written to SD card. SD is removed from 'reader'.
Some are suggesting turning off the phone before SD card is inserted into phone to avoid a problem.

Quote:

That's correct, as long as space is available on the SD card.

Quote:

That is correct, it does not automatically overwrite. As long as the file names are not the same.
If they are, the PC should ask if it is okay to overwrite.

Additionally, anything else that daughter would want, that the phone can handle, can all be transferred to
the phone via the same SD card. So you never need a cable or Bluetooth to transfer data.

Have fun with the new phone!

You don't need a cable, you can use bluetooth (it's the same speed) the cable/bluetooth transmission is VERY VERY SLOW, like class 1/2 tops.

You are better off using a SDHC reader on your PC via USB or cardslot. I got 2 of these phones with
different cards, and they average 500k/s to 1 mb/s over bluetooth/usb, but 4-6 over SD adapter.

You don't need to turn off the phone to take out the card or insert it. If the phone is not recognizing it, it is because
the card is not formatted correctly. To reformat the card, make sure you set the cluster size/allocation size to
16 or 32kb, if it is larger it will cause issues (like hangs when you insert/remove the card, and slowdowns).

Has anyone figured out how to get the Status bar @ the top to hide when you are running java apps yet?
Full screen java apps get cropped at the bottom (320x240 games and such) and run quite slow.
I'm not sure if they run slow because of the higher resolution graphics or the cropping that is going on.
208x208 stuff runs fine, but it gets left-justified. Have tried with some various games, and get the same thing every time.
Either need to find a way to center 208x208 stuff, or to get 320x240 stuff working correctly.

Is there a tool to resize java apps to get them working correctly, or to hide the status bar?

> I think I found it but will test later, editing the midlet config with the following should do it: LGE-MIDlet-Indicator: Hide

Did this to change resolution on nokia phone, basically use archive manager like winrar or something to
extract the .jar and edit META-INF\MANIFEST.MF

LG Java Attributes

Oh, and obviously adding
LGE-MIDlet-TargetLCD-Height: 240
LGE-MIDlet-TargetLCD-Width: 320

Would stretch any midlet to be fullscreen, but note that you cannot use the h/w commands to shrink a
midlet (like making a 320x240 midlet smaller to make room to also show the status bar) I'll try this later = X

Just a note the 900's full canvas seems to be 320X220. So, if you get a full screen application that is 320x240, there will be overshoot. To compensate for the top status bar, I have been suggesting to folks look for applications that are 320x19.

You don't see a lot of provisions for rescaling graphics with J2ME. This is why some applications will have separate .JAR's to downland for a whole host of screen resolutions.

Keep in mind J2ME is kept simple and light so that they will run on limited memory, and low requirement phones. So to have graphics conversion etc..would take just that much more resources. So for myself, I know that when I play with a phone that uses J2ME, not not expect a lot, and be excited if the application actually works :)

I have a bunch of application for my phones with smaller screens, but now I will have to go look for higher resolution versions. I know in my adventures I will find more goodies out there in the process.

Some, good, applications will have separate .JAR's- one for 'canvas' and 'full canvas height'. If the phones firmware permits full canvas (no status bar shown) then great.

I know my LG420 will allow full canvas if the application requests it. I have not sat down with my 900 long enough to really explore what the firmware will do. I'm getting caught up on things around here, so hopefully soon I'll be able to really tear into my 900.

You mentioned slow frame rates. A lot could depend on the application and exceeding canvas boundaries yes. I see you noticed, running a lower res. within screen boundaries, applications seem to work fine. I noticed graphically the 900 is running faster than my 420 which I thought was good.

My concern is, in a way, J2ME is a bit dated, and there is not much incentive for the application creator to 'refresh' their software for newer phones, so they work right and fit to screen. I've seen some dandy midlets that ran on really old phones, but resolution wise are way to small to use on my 900.

Have fun exploring!

As you can see, editing manifest.mf removes the status bar and allows 320x240 midlets to run full screen.

However, the hi-resolution graphics bog down the phone a bit, even though it has a 266 mhz or so processor,
so don't expect it to handle many of the newer 3D games, and even 2d games.
Sonic Unleashed 320x240 ran choppy, though 208x208 ran fine.

Some 3D games run at 10-15 fps or so, which is decent, but still pretty poor, but that is @ 320x240.
Best sticking with 2D.
There might be some kind of parameter to give more resources to java apps by disabling
LG's multitasking feature by specifying it in the midlet, but I don't know how.

Anyways, resizing the canvas works great in older java apps and stubborn apps (like opera, and dictionaries).
They have to be designed to scale though, so you can't use it on fixed bitmap stuff like games.
You may also be able to edit the file to make it default the hybrid keyboard to qwerty mode, but I don't know how.

Oh, also I can't figure out how to grant java permission to access files (read or write). I haven't tried bluetooth or SMS.
I think perhaps Net10 firmware blocks everything except HTTP to java. If there is a way around it let me know, but it
would likely involve some shady business with modifying the firmware/inserting certs - but if it is something as
simple as placing it in a specific file folder I don't know about, or adding a line to a text file, It would be great to know.

I'm having the insufficient memory problem when I try to open links in text messages.

I installed Bolt and Opera and I can use them from games and apps, but if I try to open a

Is it possible to make bolt or opera the default browser for opening links in text messages?

Any help is appreciated, Charley

I did not get the card or reader yet, but when I do, I will be back if to read all the instructions you both left.

The reader I got was added on to the card purchase as an extra, from the guy I bought it from on Ebay, so it is additional.
It says on the package "Micro SD USB CARD READER" so I am not sure if that is a SDHC reader or if there is a difference
between this and a SDHC reader, but I guess I will find out when it gets here. All this new technology is just making me dizzy.

@ curstpriest- Good job on post #55 and nice screenshot.
Yes, I was referring to all the older applications that are fixed bit mapped, where they wold not scale.
The average user really just wants the thing to work with ease was why I made the suggestion to seek
out the midlets for your phones screen size.

As far as java R/W permissions, That's probably touching on restricted API's.
I've run into all kinds of walls poking around on similar in the past.
Ideally, a user defined .JAD would accompany the .JAR to override any permission requests,
but it would have to be signed to work.
Some of the Tracfones flat out reject a .JAD. Hadn't tried it on the 900 yet.

If you could get a .JAD to take, you could use MIDlet-Data-Size to set the persistent data storage for that particular midlet.

It sure would be nice to know what the default maxsize of the RMS is for the 900.
When I get some time one day, I'll have to see if I can find out.

For some light reading, look for something to do with security for applications under MIDP 2.0, JSR-118. ;)

Have fun experimenting!

@ dstarrsfan - Ah, the 'insufficient memory' issue.
The links in the text messages are taking you to a web age that is larger than a few hundred k in size, which is most web sites today.

That's correct, the phone is rigged to open up the default browser when selecting a link in a text message.
It's pretty much a closed system phone.

No, unfortunately an alternative browser cannot be selected as the default browser. Again, it's a closed system.

This issue (web page size limit) also exists in the LG420, so the LG900 is not alone.

Still, one can't complain for what is now a $30 QWERTY phone, but it's fun trying to get the most out of it. :)

newegg.com is your best bet for buying cheap SD if you are in the US.

my brother's phone I got him a 16gb card, class 4 patriot, cost like 30$, but had to format it to 8 because the phone is kind of cheap and can't read over the 8gb block correctly.

Class 4 card only writes at 4mb/s (pretty slow).

I got a transcend 8gb class 6 card for the second phone, and it writes at 7.5mb/s (much faster), it was 15$ on newegg.

Both cards I ordered came with Micro-SDHC -> SDHC adapters (so you can put it in a standard SDHC slot, like a laptop, or if you already have some usb cardreader). If you don't have a usb cardreader, you can get the exact same card with the cardreader on newegg for like 18$ instead of 15$.

Likewise, you can find cheaper cards too, and they have free shipping, so if I was you, I'd stay FAR away from EBAY.

Most cheap cards you will find are only class 2! (they will take days to write to, chugging along at 2 mb/s).

The 900 will read jad's, but I don't know much about java, and there seems to be a limit of how big of a jar you can stuff in there, I think it's around 3.5-3.8 MB.

@ zoomo - In your first post you mentioned you purchased a 'micro SD card'.
Yep, that is what the phone requires, so you are OK on that.

The term 'SDHC' is merely the 'branding' of SD cards 4GB and up that's all. The HC part stands for high capacity.

So as far as I can tell, you're still on track. :)

If the 900 reads .JAD's I bet it won't go too much further than the mandatory information.

midlets that need to know what the phone is capable of obtain system information from MDIP.
Through this process, it's reporting the 900's total memory for midlets is set to 3,670,016 bytes.
So max RMS would not be beyond that value.

It does have FileConnection-API, so there is your file access.
But without a signed midlet, it would keep polling the user for permission.

Except for the built in stuff where in the case of PIM-API - like your contacts, there is permission to import and export.
Oh yeah for that! Some older Net10 phones do not. :)

Oh, you asked something about by way of bluetooth (eye lids getting heavy...)
During a BT session with my PC to 900, I tried to delete a file from the phone from the PC side, and it was not allowed.
So if I could not delete, I'm sure permissions could not be changed by BT connection either.

Interestingly enough, the system info retrieved says there is not Bluetooth-API.
Obviously there is when OBEX, serial emulator, and service discovery work.
Hmmm...Oh, just rambling.....It's getting late here...Time to sign off I think...

File transfer is messed up then or something, because every java app I install can't read directory structure/files.

It doesn't even prompt me to grant the application access like it does for http. :-/

@curstpriest - I'm guessing you are trying some sort of file management application? No, it would not prompt for access.
There are no permissions at all for that type of thing. It's not just the 900. It's the same for older LG (and other makes) Tracfones as well.
Hence the category 'dumbphone'. As you have observed, the only directories you get to view are the ones the phone lets you.

In a previous post, you said you had not tried Bluetooth.
There are less folders accessible when using BT, compared to using a data cable.

OK not not knowing much about Java.

Try this at the end of the .JAR's and see if this gets you anywhere:

MIDlet-Permissions: javax.microedition.io.Connector.http
MIDlet-Permissions-opt: javax.microedition.io.Connector.https,javax.microedition.io.Connector.file.read,javax.microedition.io.Connector.file.write

MIDlet-Permissions: javax.microedition.io.Connector.file
MIDlet-Permissions-opt: javax.microedition.io.Connector.file.javax.microedition.io.Connector.file.read,javax.microedition.io.Connector.file.write

That should set permissions for the connector API for http and files, if the phone will accept it.

Of course this is all 'use at the phones risk'. ;)

javax.microedition.io.Connector.file.read,javax.microedition.io.Connector.file.write

Both do nothing when added to manifest or jad.
I'm pretty sure there's something in the firmware that's blocking access to unsigned apps.
I'm fairly sure that everything is blocked (sms included) except for HTTP/HTTPS - no bluetooth, file transfer, etc - over java.

I don't know what's up with the certificates in this phone, but I can't even find anything that is signed.
Opera isn't showing up as signed when installed via JAD, and it installs as untrusted and nags nonstop.

Apparently there is no way to add/install/alter/bypass root certificates as well, since the LGAPP directory
does not get mounted properly.
It might be an override directory, or used strictly for firmware updates, I simply do not know.

The default browser is crap because it constantly runs out of memory (even with images disabled),
and opera unsigned sucks because every minute you get nagged that data rates may apply.

Also, you cannot install any sort of file-access apps such as ebook reader/document viewer or
music player (to overcome phones lack of indexing/support for various formats).

I know it's a dumb phone, but it could be a lot smarter if java at least worked as intended. =T

Is it true that this phone only lets you send texts to 5 people at once?

I want to send everyone in my contacts list a message to give them my new phone number.

The 900g is only letting me "mark" 5 people at a time. Is that as good as it gets or is there some trick?

Thanks!

If that is the case, why not just make a SMS template with what it is you have to say, and send it 1 by 1.
Or find an online SMS tool if you have TONS of people to spam, and pay some nominal fee of a few $ to use their
service to SMS bomb your friends (that's what lots of companies do to send bulletins to their workers and whatnot).

As far as USB cable, it seems to be limited to USB 1.0, bluetooth seems to run at usb 1 speeds as well.
Can't get it to go at 2.0 speeds. Makes read/write @ sd card slow.
Kind of annoying having to remove the SD card every time to add/remove files from the phone.
If anyone has a solution let me know. Have tried different cables/pcs, always the same thing - XP/7/Debian.

Also, the DATA service via USB seems to restrict modem AT commands, however - the LG update tool has a way in or at least
access to SOME at commands (swver, imei, and some file commands). If you run com port monitoring software, you can see
that the LG tool gains access to the CDMA modem and opens the port, sends AT commands, requests various information.

If we can get access over COM, we can not only import/export contacts and data, but we can use EFS tools to modify the
firmware and UI (remove annoying 300k restrictions on files to start) and other things. I suppose people could abuse it to
tether to the phone, but you can already set up bluetooth DUN anyways.

The only thing I don't like about it is the lack of apps for it.
Most of the good apps that are out there for this phone don't even work.

Like I tried to get the barcode reader app from multiple sources, but when I download them on my
phone they say something about the manifest is corrupt or something like that.

Hi johnreese and welcome to the forums. I like the 900 as well.

Manifest corrupt. General information - Try another app of the same type, or avoid the .JAD file some times.

Barcode reader applications don't not work with the LG900 (or LG420, or....) because the it lacks the permissions
for JSR 135 VideoControl.getSnapshot to let an application to 'take control' over the camera capture function.

Everyone, please keep in mind this is not a 'Smart phone' as we know it as Net10 claims.
(A smartphone for $30? Who are we kidding?) As you found, not all applications will work with it, and it's not
just this phone that won't run everything. For me, the fun of it is to find applications that will work. I talked this
up quite a bit on the Turk Frum LG420 thread, including what things to look for when java app hunting, and a
crude list of what I found that wroked on my phone.

One suggestion I make to folks is a few key word string when looking for applications: 'J2ME applications for dumbphones'.

Lotta websites will claim they have all kinds of apps and games for every phone, especially your phone.
When you get there you find nothing, or have to 'sign up', pay a fee, or applications that don't work.
Really now, do the folks behind these web sites have time to test every application on every phone out there?
Of course not. So something is a miss. Finding java mobile apps for dumphones takes a little work I admit.

Folks ask where to get applications and games. And everyone quotes the book saying go to getjar.com,
but never share 'where else' they have looked and succeed. I'll be happy to share:

http://handheld.softpedia.com - Huge collection. Look for the 'free' tab on the top right of screen (free ware filtering).
And look for games that are Platform: Java, and ignore the ones for iPhone, Blackberry, etc.

http://mobile360.org - Huge collection. Lots of them are for smarter phones. And some games that look
really good, end up having to pay for after you have installed it (wants to phone home and burn minutes).

http://sourceforge.net You'll find a lot of other sites will point their links to sourceforge.

http://www.mobilerated.com They want you to tell them what our phone is before having a look.
This might be too restrictive, so I picked a better dumb phone. this site can be hard to deal with.
Don't stress over it and move onto another site. Additionally an alternative name to LG900G is LG GW300.

http://java.mob385.com Older stuff for older phones.
Has not been updated in forever, but I found a few things of interest.

http://ngphone.com/j2me/opensource/game.htm Drawing a blank on this one...Sorry...

In general...
Somehow I feel that everyone sees a phone with a big screen, and QWERTY keyboard, and automatically
ties it with the little android running around on their TV screen late at night that can do 'everything'.

Or worse, because it has a screen and keyboard, they expect it to be a full blown PC.

I don't keep up with true smart phones, but last I heard they don't even do 'copy and paste'.
Or was that the Microsoft OS phones?

And so, I'm really glad there are places like Turk forums where we can help each other out,
when the manufacturer and seller do not supply detailed instruction manuals any more. :) ...

...But then, when electronics used to come with manuals, no one read the book, they were lost,
and had to ask some one else who read the book for them.

My guess is manufacturers knew folks didn't read the book, so they saved a buck and quit making them. ;)

Bought this phone last weekend at Best Buy for $29.99.
Haven't activated it yet but have been getting familiar with the features.
Will be switching over from Tracfone when my current airtime expires.

Does anyone know if you can and how to back up the contacts file?
I would hate to have to re-enter all that information.

Also, the microSD card I have is 8GB, but the phone only seems to see 4GB.
I have reformatted it but that did not change the size.

I think it is going to be a great phone.

Hi dbajohn,

As mentioned a couple of times in this thread, yes you can transfer contacts to and from the LG900G and
there are a number of ways to do so. By SD card, data cable, or Bluetooth. Contacts imported or exported
are in 'virtual card format' ( .VCF ).

Importing contacts
Pick your poison on the transfer method. Upon sending the contacts in .VCF format, the 900G will
immediately recognize the incoming files and and put them in the contacts for you. Nice and simple.

If the .VCF files were places on the SD card and then the SD card was placed in the phone, and want to
import contacts this way: Menu > My Folder > Memory Card > Other Files > - then highlight the .VCF file
and press 'view' (OK / navigation button). The 900G will tell you this is contacts backup file. Press the left
soft key for 'Restore' and it will import the contacts.

Exporting contacts
Menu > Contacts > Settings > Send All Contacts Via Bluetooth
or...
Menu > Contacts > Settings > Backup Contacts - Where it will ask to backup to external memory (SD card).

Once files have been stored in the SD card, you can remove the card and put it in another device and
transfer that way, or connect a data cable, and access the SD card within the LG 900G.

Have fun with your new phone!

LG900G FM Radio feature and Bluetooth - The two don't mix

The question has come up on if one could use the FM radio feature, not have headphones
plugged in, and instead use a Bluetooth headset for listening. Here was my response:

FM radio + Bluetooth headset - (minus) the wired headphones.
Yes you will need the headset, for an antenna as you are aware of. Nope no way around this.

The message you get if headphones are not inserted when enabling FM radio feature:
Posted Image

Like a lot of other similar technology, there is a mechanical switch within the headphone jack that
signals when headphones are inserted.
This is how the LG900G knows whether to enable the FM radio or hit you with a nag screen. :D

Experiment!
To see if I could shake things up, I inserted a solderable 1/8" stereo plug with no wires/headphones as shown.
The 'stubby' would get you away from using headphones, (and not have an antenna) as you desire.
The plug would open up the switch in the jack and maybe do something.
It if works one could solder a length of wire to the plug for an antenna. At least you'd not have headphones.

Posted Image
looks like a walkie-talkie doesn't it?

The FM radio does turn on as shown above In an area where I get very poor reception with
the 900, I get pure static with just the stereo plug inserted, as expected.

Now to pair up with my LG HBM-210 Bluetooh earpiece (bundled with my LG420) and see what happens....

Posted Image

'reject earjack?' that's worded funny but...Nope. Still won't let the Bluetooth work while the FM radio is on.

I also tried having the FM radio on, and selected 'Listen via (internal) speaker' and use the earpiece. Nope.

I have done other things where I got the FM radio on but it silently kicked out the earpiece, or in other cases said 'disconnected'.

Additional:
For those just reading along, who may not have this phone yet, I have made some notes and pictures regarding the FM radio option here:
http://s1.zetaboards.com/Turk/single/?p=376433&t=3862037

Something else of note. I don't use my BT ear piece ever, but I have it just for these times when some one wants
to know something, and it was free. I noticed that with the BT earpiece properly paired up, going through the menus,
with it's various beeps were still coming out of the phones speaker. So I would take it that the BT earpiece is only
used in call. If this is the only case, then using it it to listen to the FM radio wold not work.

Well...What can I say. It's a $30 Net10 phone.... :D

You can use a SDHC card of 8gb, the phone works fine with cards of 8gb, but when you go to memory info
it always says it's wrong, but it doesn't matter, it's just something wrong with the info page. When you go to
record voice/video/camera or download stuff, it allows you to transfer files above the 4gb block.

However, you can not use a card above 8gb in size. When you insert a 16gb card, it will work and allow
you to read/write up to the 8gb mark, but all files that exist above 8gb will be read by the phone as
gibberish (random ascii characters) and it won't be able to read any data that you add after that mark.

Also you need a SDHC class 6 or above to be able to save voice + video + camera shots directly to the memory card.
With SDHC class 2 voice may fail, with SDHC class 4, video will often fail. By fail I mean it will begin recording,
lock up, and then stop recording, creating an empty file. The phone really doesn't handle I/O very well - USB/BT
seems to function at 1.0 speeds (no usb 2.0) so it's mad slow, and the phone writes to the SD card pretty slow too.

I tested with the following cards:
4 gb class 2 sdhc
16 gb class 4 sdhc
8 gb class 6 sdhc

Again, all work/are recognized by the phone if formatted with 16k allocation size fat32.
16gb had to be partitioned to 8gb to work properly.. only the class 6 card could record video to the card,
class 2 card could not record audio - and also recorded camera shots very very very slowly.

Oh, also for BT sound - the quality is awful for media. It's fine for calls but the stream quality for like a
mp3 (if you have stereo BT headset, or if you try to stream through a BT laptop) is far from acceptable.
So I would not recommend going out and buying a stereo BT headset, stick to normal headphones.

^^ On the BT stereo headset...Yes, when you 'packetize' a analog signals, expect what is regurgitated to be awful.
Being in the RF communications business, well, I just can't stand what they have done on digitizing everything,
especially trying to compress and little to no forward error correction.

It's truly sad how things that should not be, have gone 'digital' and the manufacturers think 'Oh well, it's good
enough to sell. The public will get used to it.'

Just like when analog cell phones went digital. The sound and reception declined.
The only reason why cellphones went digital was to pack more users onto a tower.

SD card - Thanks curstpriest for your research into the LG900G SD card solutions. Now we know.

P.S @ curstpriest - I solved all the Java permission issues. I went out today and bought a smart phone. :D

I appreciate all of the information posted here so far.
I wanted to include two behaviors other users may want to be aware of for this phone.

1 - how to listen to fm radio + browse the web.

Start the web first, then press the multitask button to switch out of the browser and into the 'Menu' screen -
then go in to start the FM radio. I'm not sure that this will work with MP3.

2 - Side scrolling buttons STOP working in web browser.

I discovered tonight that if you put your phone in SILENT MODE (press and holding the J key) and later go
in to browse (I use Opera, but the built in browser acted the same way) - the side buttons used for volume
control would not scroll the screen up and down. I thought my phone was screwed up and tried removing
the battery to fix this, but the true fix was switching the phone out of 'SILENT MODE'.

Will this phone play the chapters in sequence?
Hi there and welcome to the Turk forums!

I personally do not have any experience with audiobooks, so much so,
I thought they required special audiobook reader software.

Looking on the net real quick about audiobooks....They are for iPods?.
If your audio book files end in .m4b They will not work on the LG900G.
It does not have a CODEC for that type of file, nor can one be installed, and so on.

I read a brief blurb that in some way you can convert an audiobook to an MP3.
Is this what you have done and are asking which directory to put in so the 900 will see it?

Where to put the files in your LG900G

If they are more than a small few megabytes in size You can not put them into the phones memory.
The reason is, the phone only has 15MB of memory, a lot of which is used by the phone itself.
It will tell you when you have over stuffed it.

So, you would need to purchase a micro SD card as intended, There is information here in
this thread about those for your review, to store your files on.

Now, where to put them on the SD card.
Anywhere. You can make your own folder, stuff it in the Videos folder, the phone does not care.
I know I just tried it, just for you!

Like other types of files, as soon as they hit the phone, it knows how to index or place them.
In this case you don't have to do anything but go to Menu > Multimedia > Music, and there your audio will be.

Will it play the chapters (or converted to MP3 by eternal means) in sequence.
I assume once they are converted to MP3 you will have a bunch of separate files or each chapter.

I just did a test to see what the music player is like.
Here is a kind of walk-through of what I think you will need to do, and as best as it will work.

* You send all of the files to the micro SD card. Don't worry about sorting in multiple folders for neatness
on the phones account because, each and everyone will be lumped together in the phones brain.

* Next, if you want to sort them out, You will need to create 'Play Lists'.
- Add a play list, and give that list a name, hit done.

* Next you are sent back to the pile of songs. You will have to march each one that will for the play list you created.
Hit done when done. The files that were not selected will still be unsorted. Of course you can create more play lists.

* The files in the play lists are automatically sorted by NAME.
So if you want to make sure your music is in order I'd made sure the file name begins with 01, 02, 03 , etc.

* The only way I saw to change the order of the play list to get it organized is to go into that play list highlight
a song, hit options and 'move up' or 'move down' as the case may be to move that song up or down in the list.
When done, use the right soft key for 'back'. It will then ask if you want to save the changes.

/\ And you can't hurt nothing by trying /\

Some might ask if you can put a book mark, in a chapter, make notes, or what ever folks can do with an audiobook.
Definitely not when it has been hacked up into an MP3. The only thing you can do to resume where you left of is
hit 'pause', and when you come back later to the music player, select 'Recently Played'

Welp, if you do try this, you'll have to let us know if the LG900G makes a fair poor man's audio book player!

Good luck!

Yes, I bought an LG900G and Optimus V in separate purchases recently.
Did not have to buy anything else in either store visit.

What's happening is the 'associate' is trying to increase his/her 'items per ticket' probably.
I used to work for RS when I was a kid. I got away from them because I did not feel comfortable hustling customers.

I'd ask for the district manager and report it. Maybe they would give you $15 instead!

The other thing that you may have encountered, and is still wrong is that you went to a 'franchised' store.
They can 'make up' things then.

That's a shame you were treated like that.

I believe they support 2 carriers, and when you order from them you get the sim that primarily supports
your carrier, otherwise it roams, could be wrong. Anyways, if you buy it at a store, and it has the wrong sim,
you can always call them and request a new sim. I've had them mail me new sims twice now.

At least I'm pretty sure that Net10 makes multiple sims for the same phones that work with various networks...
just depends where you live .......... Oh, and both times they sent me new sims free of cost.

debcroom - Hello and welcome to the Turk forum!

Unfortunately, you can not remove the about to eat your minutes notice as it is embedded in the firmware.
Many have asked ... this notification happens on other phones like the LG420G as well.

I'm thinking that if there were no notification at all, people would be even more upset trying to figure out where
10 minutes of air time when when you only accessed 2 web pages. So at least we are warned, even if annoying.

What I mean by 10 mintues an 2 web pages.

You access the Internet, It deducts units just for connecting, then more once connected.
While you are reading a page, but have not clicked on any links etc. it's still burning units.
After a few minutes of burning units, it will disconnect form the Internet. Then you click on a link...
Now you get charged another unit just for accessing and another unit as soon as you get onto the Internet.
Then there are those minutes it takes to read a page, while units are still being burnt up. Your air time goes quick.

It would be nice if, it connected to the Internet with no access charge, download the page and immediately disconnect
so you don't get charged for being idle, until you click on another link, etc. But that would save us too many units. :D

KLM
Thanks for the help, its nice to find a place for guidance.

I did find a manual for the gw300, although I have only used it for specific reference, it appears that it will
be very helpful in getting me oriented, when I finally make time to read it.

I did find a baby spread sheet that seems to work, possibly two, but they are too small for my wants.

MicroCalc: http://www.getjar.com/mobile/27971/microcalc-for-lg-gw300-onliner/

The version I got is 8x32, with no format other than: left/right, number of decimals, thousands separator
and brackets instead of minus. No time/date at all ... nothing else.

It seems to work, but I was looking for something that could handle time.

But it could be useful:
it has basic trig, logical, text and financial functions, however I have not tried them other than adding some ranges.

Its a little quirky to use IMO, I cannot "multitask" and get back to the page that I was on - so far, have to go
back to the previously saved point(same as in startup/opening a file - but it could be me) and several times
have lost some "playing" by a call or something... I momentarily see the previous work but cannot figure out
how to get there without opening a file from before.

I got distracted for a few hours, hope this still works. A big negative for me is that, the actual phone service part
only works well when it is quite, for example, when driving - others hear the road noise and say its terrible and
if I have background noise, I cannot hear them either .... had a little samsung ... 20*t? of some sort - a little flip
phone that did fine for talking..but nothing else.

Thanks for all the help, everyone.

Good job huck on finding the alternative manual for the LG 900G (GW300 manual).
That manual touches on stuff but does not really get in depth.
You will still have to do lots of exploring but in a way that's half the fun.

Thanks for the link on microcalc. Some one may come along looking just for that.

On finding limits to the programs you are downloading. That's normal really.
Currently I'm playing with an actual smart phone (android based). I'm checking out utilities and the like.
And I'm finding that there are limitations like back page just as you described (common functions missing).

It's odd how they would not include things but the thing I keep trying to impress on people is, dumb and
smart phones are not full blown computers. Software makers for these phones have to build the application
from the ground up, and supply everything that application will need and pack it up into a .JAR, etc..
But with a PC, they borrow huge blocks of code, libraries, etc. making their work short. So, I understand why
there aren't any apps that 'do all' like we are accustomed to on a PC.

On the multitask and briefly seeing your work but then can't get back to it after a call.
You have been using the task switcher button haven't you?
(The button below send, then cursor left or right to select app to resume).

In previous posts, I have gone one about how it really is not multi-tasking with the LG900, which is
what you might be experiencing. It's task switching- 'hold in memory and come back to it later'.

On the experience with noisy environment or road. I have not activated my 900, so I had no
experience on that. Maybe in that case a quality Bluetooth headset would help?

Thanks for the link, and sharing your observations on the LG900G.

I transfer them to my computer using the .wma extension. They play excellently on my MP3 player.
I do agree that they need to be titles with a 1, 2, 3 etc to keep them in order.
So what I will do is put them on the 4GB micro SDHC (still have to buy - looking for cheap one)
and then put the card into the phone.

QUESTION 1: Do you know if it will play .wma files?

I suppose I could convert these audio book chapters to MP3 files,
but I thought that MP3 was a larger file than a WMA file.

QUESTION 2: Anyone know for sure about file size difference?

Hello mssimba:

As in post #26 of this thread, I mentioned what formats the LG900G is capable of. Unfortunately .WMA is not one of them.

I'm guessing that your audio books have a pretty low bit rate, being it is just voice, at 64 bit, maybe even 32 bit.
If you convert it to .MP3 you'd probably have to go with a higher bit rate to keep from being annoyed with the quality.
And when that happens, the file size will go up.
So I think it is safe to say, converting to .MP3 will increase the file size possibly 2x in your case.

On finding a 4GB micro SD card...
Your local Wal-Mart sells them in right in the store, right next to the prepaid cellphones actually.
Buy local, save on shipping, and you know what you got in hand.
I have a 4GB in my LG 900, and it came from Wal-Mart. So, it works is what I am trying to say. :)

Good luck,

Need to know if there's any way at all to delete all of the text all at once then doing it manually one by one?
Just got the phone today from Best Buy for the sale their advertising, good deal indeed!
Here's how to delete your text messages after too many steps in my opinion, but it is what it is.

While in the Texting screen, go to the 'box' you want to delete stuff from (in box, out box, drafts)
> press left soft key for Options >Mark/Unmark > Where you can then select Mark All.
Press select then you will see all the message have a checked box on the left.
Press Options again, and select Delete

Class 10 hoo-rah huh? :)

You know, my dinosaur Motorola W260G has a 'clean up' where you can select in, out, drafts to delete
all from that box or delete everything form every box, without taking tons of key presses to do so.
Why LG could not do this with a better phone I dunno.

Welcome to the Turk forums and happy experimenting, which is half the fun of having a new phone.

I just tried to sms an app from getjar, but I get "Sorry, we couldn't send an sms message to that number. Please try again."
Is there something that I need to enable on my Net10 account? ... I have gotten regular texts.
Hi gperkins, and welcome to the Turk forums,

Actually, a .JAR cannot be sent anywhere by by SMS as you are limited to 160bytes max and nothing but text. ;)

You probably mean MMS. Uh....A couple things come to mind that could be the problem.

1.> Any files you MMS in either direction cannot exceed 300kB.

2.>If you just got your phone, Net10 wants you to wait like 24 hours before doing anything data wise.
This tidbit is in the book that came with the phone, and on their website when activating.

If at all possible, I'd recommend not having files MMS'd to your phone. Now that web site has your phone number, etc.
Instead, download the .JAR's to your PC, where it can be saved, and used on other phones in your collection :) ,
and transfer the file to your LG900G by way of bluetooth, data cable, or a micro-SD card.

Happy experimenting with you new phone- If you break it, they are oh so cheap to replace these days!

Charge On

I finally was able to buy the LG 900G without the accessories. I have a question about the fm radio.
At first I thought I was getting bad reception because I was in a house with a metal roof but I went
outside and most of the time I get no sound quality from the nearest station and I get just static.
I received reception when I first tried it but it is like it fades in and out at times.
I was also using a good pair of ear buds while experimenting.

Is anyone else having this problem? I don't have bluetooth enabled yet. Just wondering if I have a bad unit.

Thanks! awweeks@gmail.com

Hello awweeks,

As some one with decades of radio circuit experience, I do not believe you have a bad unit.
The in and out reception and lack of stations is to be expected due to the construction.

Good or cheap earbuds will net you the same reception.

Enabling bluetooth has nothing to do with FM radio mode and intact you can't use the Bluetooth
while in FM radio mode on the LG900G. I tested this and provided my findings in post 77.

As per my post #27 and in this thread I have explained what is going on.
When you have a moment you may want to have a look at them. They really explain the technology in general.

Lotta good info in this thread on the LG900G. When you get a moment, it might be a good thing to digest.

Have fun with your new phone!

Charge On

On top of what I previously mentioned...

The phone turns off automatically and locks up - no buttons respond - sometimes keypad may light up.

Other than that, keys will not function. Please help!
