Weyrgirl Threadfall was a good month gone, perhaps more; Theta payed little attention to formal calendars. Jacinta's clutch was laid and hatched, a beautiful, healthy clutch despite the poor turnout of 'candidates' for it. Thus the Wishrider was back in the grips of feeling useless. It had been midmorning when the feeling struck, Careth still complacent from yesterday's feeding and napping on the ledge outside, Theta folded up on the large chair in her weyr, paging through a book in a desultory fashion. She wasn't sure she was allowed to take them from the archives, but it was a silly book, really, a fantasy by a frivolous author of a Weyr in which only green and blue dragons lived. He obviously didn't know much about dragons; he thought greens could chew firestone and still lay clutches. He also had the ridiculous notion that greens could lay gold eggs, and that greens could rule a Weyr without letting the whole thing fall apart from neglect. Not that Theta had anything against greens, but they had their place. If a Weyr had only greens and blues, and one green's egg hatched a Gold, of course the Gold ought to take over! The author seemed to disagree, whuch was frankly ridiculous. At any rate, there was one scene that rather piqued Theta's interest. Threadfall, as it might be if only blues and greens were flying - the larger greens were trained to 'catch' the smaller ones, and the smaller ones learned to snatch Riders who lost straps. It actually seemed a rather clever idea, if the only clever idea this author had come up with. There were healers in Tropical Cove's current wings, but insofar as Theta was aware, only one of them, and maybe Indra's Niennath, were trained to catch. Might needless casualties be avoided if a few other dragons learned this? Careth, who had naturally been evesdropping - she enjoyed these books more then Theta - seemed to think it was a good idea. ~I am not a small dragon, Thetamine. I could help catch the fighters. Most of us in the Queen's wing could.~ Theta tucked a bookmark between the pages and rose with a little yawn. The small, brown-patched kitten that had been napping on her lap mewled loudly at this disturbance; Theta transfered the minute feline to a still-warm patch in the chair, which seemed to satisfy the creature, for she stretched her diminutive paws to their full extent, revealing tiny pinprick claws, then curled up again and was soon asleep. "Well, I have to do something," Theta responded to her dragon, fondling the kit's ears, "and I think there's at least one thing we can practice..." Ten minutes later, Theta emerged into the Weyrbowl with a set of straps for Careth and a sack of grain from the kitchens. Her hair had been pulled back into a pale braid, terminating between her shoulderblades, and although she had eschewed riding jacket and helmet, she was wearing wherhide pants, leather boots, and a pair of goggles for flight. "So, here's the trick," she explained, dropping the grain. It looked rather too large for her delicate frame to support. "We can't always fly fast enough to get under a Rider if they fall." She tossed the straps over Careth's neck; the dragon dropped obligingly to allow her to fasten the various buckles of the harness. "And it takes a while to get into position - too long. So what I want to try is catching one on your head, which is easier to position, and flipping them back along your nack so I can grab them." Careth gave a low rumble of confusion that made her taut, pink and purple splashed hide quiver. Theta scratched a patch of vivid orange on her dragon's flank and concentrated of the image - falling sack, Careth angling towards it, too far left, whips head over, catch, half turn, sack sliding down neckside to avoid hardpointy ridges, Theta grabbing. ~Ah,~ she allowed after a moment, ~I think I see. There would also be less risk of tearing a wing sail. Who will drop the sack?~ Theta pushed her goggles up onto her pale hair and peered around the Weyrbowl through amethyst-flecked eyes. "Um. That one I need to work on..." Biadora Thera can be seens talking (read, flirting) with a visitor further away down the weyrbowl. But surely there must be a petter pick around the bowl somewhere?? Weyrgirl Up on a sunwarmed ledge, a misty grey dragon surveyed the scene below with interest, relaying the conversation to her rider. It wasn't really evesdropping. Theta and Careth weren't trying to be quiet. Or something like that. Licriemth's concience had always been somewhat pragmatic. Perched next to her was a girl... presumably a girl, under the bulky clothes and bandages swathing her right side. Raven-black hair was visable about her pale face, cut boyishly short to hide the singed and broken ends, and one twilight-colored eye was closed against a beam of sunlight passing through a gap in the clouds. ~Sonyamine? I think I will ask if I can help,~ the dragon allowed, after a time. Her rider gave a lopsided smile and opened the one eye left uncovered. "Go ahead," she said in a hoarse whisper, "you need to fly, and Faranth knows I haven't been able to go with you." ~It has only been a month. You will be recovered soon, and then we can fly,~ the dragon said stoutly. Sonya's smile broadened, but her face was still tender with burns; with a little gasp of pain, she let her lips drop. With some concern making her eyes swirl faintly yellow, the silvery dragon dropped off her ledge, extending narrow pinions at the last moment to bring herself up short of the ground, and landed neatly. ~I could not help but overhear,~ she said courteously to the Wish and her rider, ~But perhaps I could be of assistance?~ ((Ooc: I can do this whole thing with just my characters. Don't feel compelled to join, I just wanted to open a thread in case anyone wanted to roleplay without acquiring new pets . I mean, we've got mandatory threads for thread and wing meetings and such like; this not a major event, just... Well, I think y'all get the picture. But I don't feel like typing any more now.)) |
