Lunar Island was dark with recent nightfall. The sounds of the wind and crickets were interrupted only by the clanging of swords from the top of a three story building. Two figures danced a ballet of parries, dodges, and strikes in perfect form. One, a black panther, wore a blue suit and fedora, smiling through beads of sweat as his opponent, a coyote with a silver ponytail, expertly met him strike for strike. Unlike his opponent, the coyote barely broke a sweat and did not smile. "For being out of practice, you are awfully well-practiced," the panther grinned. The coyote grunted. "I think we have different ideas of 'out of practice'," he countered in his thick Eastern American accent. "Come on Jonathan, it's Thanksgiving! Shouldn't you be home eating turkey?" "I have a job to do, so I am here to do it," Jonathan caught the panther off guard and struck him in the face with the hilt of his sword. Bloodied, his opponent went reeling toward the side of the building. Jonathan dove for his pistol a few feet away where it had been sent clattering at the beginning of the fight. Before the panther had time to react, Jonathan took only split seconds to line up and fire. The bullet tore through the panther's skull, taking no prisoners. Jonathan stood to his feet, his face somber. "Goodbye, old friend." |
