Of vanishing American customs

This year's National Spelling Bee just took place, and it appears that the winners, again, are mostly Asian immigrants, or children of Asian immigrants, with Indian names predominating. Only a few of the top finishers seem to be of old American stock. So, ironically, it appears that a peculiarly American custom is now dominated by everybody but Americans. I can only wonder if our dumbed-down culture and educational system are in large part to blame, and the very presence of so much 'diversity' is serving to further weaken our school systems by diverting resources and time to educating students whose first language is not English. The spelling bee will probably go by the wayside as Anglo-Americans dwindle in proportion to everybody else, and as English is demoted to a second language next to Spanish, which will probably dominate. And any English which does survive will be of a very basic kind.
