You all be the judge of it but after reading this article, Jurrjens might trying to win the job in spring training from the get go.

Quote:

The young right-hander's third day throwing off the mound was his most impressive so far. Jurrjens threw hard and showed good command and movement of his sinker and changeup, demonstrating why Detroit had him penciled in its rotation before parting with him in the Edgar Renteria trade.

When hitter Brayan Pena took a few borderline strikes near the knees and said he was waiting for something up in the zone, a Braves official smiled and said, "You're going to wait a while."

If Jurrjens keeps it down in the zone like that, we could be looking at this kid penciled in for the 5th spot in the rotation.

If either Chuck or Hampton can't go then I fully expect to see him be in one of their spots, if not then he will start in the minors and be the first one called if an injury was to happen within the rotation.

I like our Depth. :)

love to hear that. hes not one of those cocky young arms who thinks he can overpower everyone with high heat like he did in the minors...if he keeps that up i think he could beat out chuck regardless of health

I totally agree with everything you just said. Would be nice if chuck was put in the BP and pitched long relief.

also, any word on Jeff Bennett? I know he could be a dark horse candidate to lock down the 5th spot...he closed out the season well for us last year. also reportedly pitched well in the Venezuelan league this winter and reported to camp over thirty pounds lighter than last year. I think hes looking for a spot in this rotation and worked his tail off in the offseason. how does he look at camp?

Ya, I dont think that Jeff will be close to being in the rotation. He will be in the minors all this year unless someone get hurt. I thought he was out of options though but read somewhere he still had options so ya i have no idea about that.

Hello everyone... I am new to this board. But, not new to Braves baseball. I am really excited about this year and I think by the end of the year you will see Jair in a starting spot because from recent Chuck James quotes it seems as though that shoulder may come back to haunt him. I hope he has a great year though despite his shoulder trouble. Jeff Bennett seems to of got himself in shape and that is great but I don't see him starting but he would be a good long innings guy for us.

From what I have read, he is looking real good and it seems he has dropped another 20 lbs so he has dropped a total of 50 lbs, Bennett has 2 options left but he might make the team as long reliever out of the bullpen.

Nice to have these types of problems when you have too many pitchers unlike what we had last yr, not enough that we had to hunt high and in basements to find people to pitch for us.

Haha, Last year was a struggle and a real pain. One of the most stressful years to be a Braves fan considering the talent that the team had.

either way we go (jurrjens, james, bennett or other) i dont think we could break camp with a fifth starter who would give us worse production than Mark "I hit the showers in the 2nd Inning" Redman...

0-4, 11.63 ERA
