Wyndfyre stood on the beach, under the shadow of the mountain. Mount Justice. But for him, the mountain did not signify justice. He closed his eyes and bowed his head. His lips moved, but the words were stolen away by the pounding surf and the wind. He collapsed to his seat in the sand. All he could do was sit, staring out to the ocean. His red hair billowed across his scarred face. |

There were many things Kalomand'r knew as a warrior. One such thing was the unfortunate truth of forced retreat. There were just times in war that you had to pull back from lost fortifications to recenter and regroup; a time that the Titans had had to endure. Their home was Mount Justice, now. Displacement was never an easy thing, even to super-powered individuals like them. It wasn't even easy for him. Because, for him, it wasn't just a displacement. Like others, he had lost a comrade. In his case, it was a fellow Tamaranean: Ryna-Maiend'r. While, truthfully, he had not known her that well, but he had heard that she like a true Tamaranean in the end. Another that he knew was affected by the loss was Vetarend'r. The two had been romantically involved for a time before the attack, so the loss hit him harder than it even hit Kalomand'r. To date, he had left it alone, trusting in his comrade's ability to cope. But now, he was starting feel a bit of concern. So, when he had asked around, he learned that Wyndfyre had last been seen going down to the coast outside of the mountain base; separating himself from the others, by the Tamaraneans own account. It seemed it was a time for a heart-to-heart between warriors. He knew it would be a good idea for him to fly to the beach. Thinking of the good times he had with his mother that brought him to flight did well to clear his head as he glided across the sand searching for his comrade. Of course, sitting in the sand as he was, Wyndfyre wasn't hard to find. Taking a moment to touch down at a distance to walk the rest of the way, Kalomand'r considered what he would say. "Vetarend'r," he said to get his fellow Tamaranean's attention, "I see something is troubling you. May we speak about it?" |

Vetar glanced up, blinking away tears. He was a little surprised, not expecting Kalomand'r... or, well, not really expecting anyone, for that matter. He reached up to dash away his tears... before lowering his scarred-up arm slowly. He had to leave them. They were a testament to Ryna, and he would not be ashamed of them, not even among the Tamaranean brothers he had fought beside in the war. "Kalomand'r." His voice cracked and he winced, a sure sign of weakness--those things he had tried so hard to quell when he had served as an officer. Those days already felt so far away. Wearily, he rose to his feet. His body felt heavy as a planet core, but he tried to shrug it off out of respect for Kalomand'r. The veteran certainly deserved such respect; he had done nothing but fight honorably and fiercely throughout the war--far better than Vetar himself had. Vetarend'r pounded his fist to his chest in an honorable greeting. "Hello, war-brother." Vetarend'r greeted in their mother tongue. But even he himself could hear that there was no warmth in his greeting, no smile to his voice. How could there be, when his joy had been stripped away? "I... I've lost something very precious to me, Kalomand'r," he began softly. His face clouded over with sorrow as he turned away to stare out over the ocean again. "...I'm sure it's all over the base by now, but... have you heard about Ryna-Maiend'r?" |

So he had been crying. It came as no surprise, considering what he had lost when Ryna had fallen. Kalomand'r had nothing to say against it; this was simply his brother-in-arms' way of dealing with it. At the same time, he didn't want to admit that he had cried at length himself at the loss of his mother. When his comrade rose and greeted him with a salute, he returned in kind - with the addition of a slight bow of his head. Even after the war on their home world, Vetarend'r had still once held a higher station than he had and gained that slight more respect for it. "I have. I hear she fought as a warrior would to the end. That is something of pride, even in this dark time." |

The added honor to the salute didn't go unnoticed, but Vetarend'r was preoccupied. Still, he felt honored that Kalomand'r would still think of him as an officer in any way. Vetar's throat tightened. Despair was threatening to choke him. But he nodded. "They said..." His voice was failing him. He cleared his throat. "I was told she died fighting to protect the ones who were evacuating." He sighed heavily, and more tears slipped. All he could do was stare up at the sky. "I couldn't be more proud of her, Kalomand'r. If she had been on Tamaran during the war instead of me, it would have ended three months sooner. She was ten times the commander I could ever hope to be. The warrior's spirit burned brighter within her heart than many men. She..." He clenched his teeth. The tears flowed faster. "She..." He cursed a string of Tamaranean obscenities--words that likely no one had ever heard him utter before. "I just want her back!" Wyndfyre's voice cracked as the tears coursed down his face. His brow was dark with rage as he bellowed, "Why...?! If anyone was weak enough to be killed, it was me! So... how could she have gone? How could anyone have been stronger than she was?!" |
