"I hate Tuesdays ..." grumbled crewman Vasin amidst a maze of dripping pipes, cramped quarters, and yawning metal to his comrade, crewman Stevens, as he flipped a few switched and turned a massive valve. "You're supposed to hate Mondays, Vas." replied Stevens in turn, also flipping various switches and turning a valve, albeit much smaller and with less strain. "Yeah? Well we didn't go through fifteen drills yesterday morning. Glad it's over and it's finally game time ... b`lyad'!" Vasin finished turning the valve and smashed the intercom with his fist, "Comrade Commander Kaufmann, we are ready to surface." "Thank you, crewman Vasin. Monitor the pressure gauges from your location and make sure nothing explodes." The German commander eyed behind him by the captain's seat after he had said this. "Da Comrade Commander, soviet technology is very reliable. Comrade Stevens and I have it." The commander proceeded to flick a few switches on the intercom before speaking again, "This is Commander Kaufmann on the bridge. Get to your stations, we are surfacing! This is not a drill you limp bastards, I repeat, this is not a drill!" The quiet of the ocean is disrupted very soon by the surfacing of a massive behemoth of a submarine. It was big alright- about 570 feet from end to end. It breached up a few feet from the surface and splashed down with a might that would make even a blue whale absolutely pale in comparison. The submarine was black, save for faint graffiti emblazoned on one of its flanks, painted in red and heavy stylized. Red Thunder - RX-001 Commander Kaufmann turned on his heel and saluted behind him towards the cinematically darkened area of the room where the captain would be seated. "Bust out the missiles, 'comrades.'" The Captain stepped into view wearing a rather un-naval uniform. He chuckled lightly. "And prepare to fire." |

Some minutes later, crewman Vasin was seen wiping his brow. The burly russian man took a swig of vodka that was kept close on hand. His friend and comrade, crewman Stevens, laughed lightly and put his hands over his knees and bent his legs slightly. "Missiles loaded! Wonder what shit we'll be blowing up, da?" "The fun kind, champ." The two crewman froze as they saw their captain, The Red X, right next to them. They hadn't even seen him coming. The infamous thief chuckled and inspected the missile they had just loaded into the tube. "Not bad for a skeleton crew." He looked between the two of them, the sailors still stunned, and without missing a beat he walked away. "That guy gives me the creeps, Vas." "Da, probably gets a kick out of it too." |

For the last hour, the submarine had been abuzz with excitement. Quiet whispers and rumors of all kinds found there way to every member of the Red Thunder's small crew. The crewmen and relatively small cadre of officers were all doing their rounds of the ship to prepare for what was to come. A few of them maintained the ship's outdated systems whilst others did their rounds to keep pests at bay. Still others went about a stranger task ... Several crewmen went around the ship with buckets of yellow paint. They ran through the maze of tight corridors of the submarine without any weird looks from their crew mates. This is because everyone on the ship had an understanding: they were all outcasts, they all needed each other, and they all wanted to make a lot of money. There was no distrust, not in the slightest. They set down their buckets of paint at the end of the crew quarters and set about painting yellow lines on the walls and floors. They were haphazard and messy, but each room had a line along the floor and the walls that contrasted well enough with the dimly lit gunmetal gray of the halls. The painting of the rooms themselves stopped halfway through the crew quarters and continued outward- the lines split off now. One went to the mess hall, another to the planning room, others extended to restrooms near those locations, one towards the hatch leading to the upper deck of the sub, and still more extended all around to various lounges and places of interest around the craft. Where the lines did not lead, however, were towards the engine room, the ship's "vault", the reactor room, the missile bays, the armory, or other sensitive locations that contained vital or dangerous shipboard mechanics or functionality, or places the crew and X wanted to draw attention away from. One crewman in particular began painting a message on the deck of the sub. It would be washed away once they went under, but that's quite alright. He'd paint it on the inside too. WElcOME titANs! fOllOW tHE yEllOW liNEs ONly! Red X leaned back in a large, black leather armchair and kicked his feet up on a desk covered in maps, schematics, and makeshift Red X memorabilia. The room was dimly lit, save for the desk itself, and the walls were covered with even more maps and pictures of various artifacts and supposedly secret and experimental technology from around the world. The room was cramped, it seemed barely able to hold three people. It felt even more stuffy when someone would notice a bunk behind the chair! But it certainly seemed to fit the infamous thief, now apparently captain of a motley crew. A king of thieves. All he needed was a crown. He had stolen plenty of those already. In the darkness, X held what seemed to be a gray rectangular block with several sinister looking spines sticking out of the top end of it. He flicked what seemed to be some sort of cap that concealed a darker, circular portion of the device on and off. After another few flicks of the cap, Red X checked a watch that he didn't have. He nodded, satisfied with the lack of information he was given. The time was already displayed beneath the mask of his powered suit- he was either going to be right on time, and hour behind, or an hour ahead. Any of those eventualities had a plan. The same plan. Better not blow me off, bird man. You know what I can do. I'm your only chance, and you know it. And if you're smart, you'll trust me. If X had a visible face to indicate a smile, he'd be showing it rather proudly to the world right about now. Even if all else failed, he would have an "I told you so" moment with the one man he most wanted to have one with. Nightwing. Bird man. Boy wonder. Robin. And he would pick up. He would know who is calling. If he's early, it's a chance for the Titans to find out where he lives. If he's late or on time, there is no other choice. Not a smart one, at least. If he didn't? That's fine. He'll have his fun and improvise. It's been a long time since the Red X has been seen in a proper battle. A part of him is a fighter, maybe even a warrior. The chance to test his skills and show the Brotherhood of Evil and the Titans how much of a threat he was is too good to pass up. It's also great for business ... but his plan is better for business. And what is the plan? Give the Titans a mobile base that can't be found so easily, then destroy the Brotherhood again. A world not under the iron fist of the Brotherhood was a profitable one. There will always be people like him to fight the Titans, loners and upstarts who get a small following. When they band together though, when they force you to pick a side, that's when it's time to bring back the status quo. That's when it's time to at least pretend to have an ideal and stick to it until things are back to normal. Even his crew, as much as they had grown on him over the last year or so, had a purpose. Eventually, he'd be done with them and back on his own. It was just the way of things. At the end of the day, he was Red X. Red X works alone. Hopefully everyone would conveniently forget that for at least a little while and humor him. ((Some time later.)) Things are getting too tense. Let's bump up the time table, it'll lighten the mood. And lighten the mood he would by pressing one of the buttons on the communicator. "Hey babe, it's X. I'd love to chat for a few hours, but I need to talk to Blackhawk. Just letting you know I'm thinkin' about'cha." He chuckled as he tapped the communication from Starfire to Nightwing. The Brotherhood would know both of them had been contacted, but the communications on either end came out as garbled. They may have cracked Titan encryption, but not X's. If they tried to track his location, they'd be kindly directed to the Grimoire Towers. Maybe they'd blow themselves up. "Alright Nightingale. Remember that big thing I mentioned? Oooh I think I'm hearing it. So, you're going to listen to what I have to say, or you're going to hang up on me and more Titans are going to die. Because of you. Believe it or not, I don't want that to happen. How about you?" |
