AKAI ITO
(red thread)
FYI: http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Akai_Ito
Interesting how the drama flips from TV series to big screen movie and then back to the TV series to finish up the story.
I saw the movie about a week ago in Japan, without having seen or having known about the whole drama-movie-drama setup, so it was a good movie, but I did come out of it a little confused.
SPOILER WARNING
So what happened in the movie? As far as I can accurately remember. I am leaving some things out, but here's the main picture
Spoiler: click to toggle Starts where the protagonists are in middle school. Preparation for the school festival. Akkun and Mei are randomly chosen to lead the classroom display/activity while Takachan and others are going to perform in a band. Sara volunteers to coordinate the dancing for the band and really shocks the others by her rock-style dance.
The classroom display/activity is fortune telling. Akkun plays one of the people doing the fortune telling but he's cheating off a book that tells fortunes by date of someone's birth. Haha. Akkun asks Mei her birth date so he can tell her fortune with the book. (Meanwhile Takachan is listening at the door) Akkun finds out that Mei's birthday is the same as his and feels that he and Mei and fated to be together.
On a school trip, Akkun and Mei plan their free day together but Akkun's mother is suddenly hospitalized and Akkun must go home early. Akkun and Mei sneak out at night and have their little planned trip before Akkun has to leave. Akkun confesses that they have the same birthday and that he remembers meeting her when they were 12 [cake incident] He asks if she believes in fate. They promise to meet at the cake shop on their 16th birthday.
Back at the hotel later that night, Mei talks to Sara and finds out that Sara has a crush on Takachan. Mei tells her to go for it and good luck.
On the free day, Mei tells her friends (Sara included) that she will be taking the day by herself and going through the plan that she and Akkun made together. At the last second, Takachan runs off to join her.
Sara, Mia, Natsu, Mitsu see Mei and Takachan in a store from outside the window. Sara calls Mei and asks her casually how her day is going and if she is alone. When Mei answers that she's alone (even though Takachan is with her) Sara is heartbroken.
When everyone gets back to the hotel, Sara confronts Mei about why she lied and then without waiting for an explanation, runs up to the roof, crying because she feels betrayed. Mei attempts to calm her down but Sara won't listen and jumps off the roof.
When school starts again, people are bullying Mei because they think she made Sara jump off the roof. Takachan defends her and so do her other friends. They all go to visit Sara (who it turns out was hospitalized but ok) before she transfers to another school. They find out that she has lost all memory of before and her mother asks them to forget they ever knew Sara.
Akkun, meanwhile, has not kept in touch with Mei. For unexplained reasons, Mei's mother has asked Akkun to not get close to Mei. Mei tries to reach Akkun and when she finally does, he coldly brushes her off. Akkun then transferes out of the area to be near his mother while she goes through rehabilitation.
((wow this is longer than I thought it would be....ok what happened next..think, emily! think! ))
Heartbroken over Akkun, Mei accepts Takachan when he confesses his love for her and tells her that he will always take care of her. ((this scene was sooo cute)) They all get into different high schools and Takachan fails to get into the same school as Mei so they promise to meet everyday after class at the train station.
As school continues, sometimes Mei wants to hang out with other friends but Takachan slaps her and shouts at her for wanting to betray their promise. Mei is shocked but continues to see him.
Then, Mia is deeply depressed over an ex-boyfriend (actually...mitsu) and needs Mei. Mei asks Takachan permission but he says he has something important to tell her so she goes to him instead and tells Mia she will meet him later. Takachan hits her again for wanting to spend time with someone else and in the end she messages Mia saying she cannot meet her.
Mia is so depressed that she lets an old school mate (miyabi) take her to a club where she is offered ecstacy (panda-san!!). Just wanting to forget everything, she takes it and becomes addicted. One day she bumps into Akkun while high. He's back in the area and his mother is out of rehabilitation.
When Mei finds that Mia has been skipping school and not answered phone calls to anyone, she runs out of school to find her. She and Akkun find Mia and while Akkun doesn't believe that Mia will stop (look at his own addicted mother), Mei believes in Mia when she says she will stop using drugs. Takachan who has been waiting for Mei all this time and then finally gone out to search for her sees them just as Akkun is leaving. Takachan runs up to Mei and starts beating her. Akkun turns around, runs back and throws Takachan off Mei and punches him in the face.
Summer time. Takachan has told Mei to meet him at the festival. WHile she doesn know, he also asked Akkun to meet him there. Takachan meets Akkun and tells him that he's realized that Akkun is the only person who can make Mei happy. Then he walks off and composes a message to Mei asking forgiveness and asking if they can go back to being good friends. He sends this message while walking across a street not careful where is he going and is hit by a car.
In the next scene, Mei comes home crying and tells her mother that Takachan is dead.
Akkun realizes that his mother has been lying to him about her part time job and goes out to find her. He finds her in the shady club high again with that man. He tries to drag her away and the man tells him that his mother is better off in the club. His mother, while high, has said so many times that she wish she'd never had a kid. Akkun's mother is crying and trying to get the man to stop speaking, but Akkun is just shocked.
(( er....am I forgetting something here?))
In the last scene, it's snowing and Mei and AKkun walk up to the cake shop. While they are glad that the other has kept the promise made so long ago on the school trip, things are difficult. Mei tells Akkun that if they are really connected by a red thread that they will surely meet again. They walk off into separate directions and the screen fades to black.
"To be continued"
The End.
((omg that was long. I cried buckets in the movie theater. BUCKETS. ))
Anyways, let's talk about Akai Ito here and have a lively discussion!!
btw i'm a little confused... how many episodes before the movie takes up the story? 2 or 3 ?
*edit* wait. i just finished ep 3. there's a lot of overlap. which means.... that you don't have to watch the movie to see/understand the drama? or...the movie has the same storyline but to understand the whole story you have to see the drama.
i'm confused. who thought of this set up?!! hahaha

from my impression, I think the movie is going to be recapped in the drama and will eventually finish off in the drama with the final three episodes. I've been researching online and found from some where that the first two episodes set the foundation of the movie, then episode 3-8 is the movie but in more detail in the drama, and the final three episodes concludes the story. So, if you're stressing about not being able to watch the movie to get the drama don't worry!! the drama will go over the entire movie but in more detail..just be patient and wait...I still can't wait to watch the movie even after the drama comes out it sounds so GOOD!! YAY!! thanks for this!
