HI ,not lived there since 1948,Though my wife owned No1 Silcocks cottages, since the 1950s (sold it about 18 yrs ago.) the only ones i knew when i returned from the Army were Jennie Hornby, Lived in the Cottage next to the Hultons Folly, and Tommy Sewell who lived next door, both no longer with us. If your sister lives in the one next to what was Armisteds Farm,(The one with rows and rows of tulips) In my day Harry Hornby lived there(There was a lot of Hornbys about in those days 0:DD Bretherton was built byTB Silcock for his Farm workers, as were the cottages down Underbank., and the pair of semis on the corner of Woodhouse. The two round the corner oposite the island were built 1n 1943/44 to house to other farm workers, He also owned Hills cottages except for my grand fathers, they were the farm house and workers cottages belonging to Lodge Farm (now Waldrons housing estate,) bought from my grandfathers family in 1926. Although they were tied Cottages Mr Silcock never threw a worker or his family out, when the worker was unable to work anymore Though age, disabillity or death. I remember 3 0f his workers being killed, Tommy Sewell's dad run over by a horse and cart, and 2 others were gored by bulls, Mr Silcock was a Real Gentleman who looked after his workers to him they were family Edited by james, Nov 13 2009, 02:14 AM.
