~ It almost always looked gloomy here... you could get used to it. You start to expect it. After all, this was part of London, right? And that's just how London is... foggy... gray... dreary... rainy... depressing... A certain young blonde boy knew to expect this as well, although he didn't accept it. It just added to his rage... making him even more determined to win, and get out of here... That was his dream. Someday he'd escape this place. He had the smarts. The only thing holding him back, was the chance to become the next L... that man's successor... No one impressed Mello as much as L... no one had solved as many cases. Only the best cases were given to L, and there hadn't been one he couldn't solve. That's why Mello looked up to him. Someday he wanted to BE like him. And he did his work... he studied... trying to be number one. But he wasn't. Not really... no, there was one person in his way ALWAYS... ~ "You're in my way!" he growled at the white clad boy crouched over in front of him, with a completely white puzzle before him. |

Near looked around. "How am I in your way? There is plenty of space around me either way. There is no place you cannot go simply because I choose to sit here." He kept cool, his voice sounding almost... bored. He was the type who thought acting on emotions was stupid, and that acting without thinking was suicide. Therefore, people like Mello, people who were stupid and committed suicide, he couldn't stand them. But at the same time, he wasn't heartless... he knew that he came to this conclusion based on the fact that it was a waste of Mello's intelligence. And somewhere in him, he liked having battles of wits with the boy, and would rather he not die from his stupidity. Mello's hatred of him, however, he felt was a bit different. Not so friendly. |

'Cheeky little brat...' That was part of what he hated about Near. He thought about everything so much that he could find an argument for almost ANYTHING. "Che... I'm not wasting time going around you. You're the idiot in the middle of the hall!" |

Near grinned. Right, of course that would be a waste of time, but... "I don't think you have to worry about the time wasted... you've wasted more time in confronting me about it than you would have if you had just taken the short detour around me." Why DID Mello have to argue with him about everything? It made Near a little sad. He would be glad to work with Mello... it was Mello that couldn't stand the idea of working with him. Then again, he was considered a freak. How could Mello be expected to work with someone so strange as him? |

Did he always feel like he needed to get the last word? He was shaking with anger. Even though it was true, he wasn't going to leave until he got back at Near for all his snide comments. "You're sitting in the middle of the damn hallway! Who WOULDN'T say you were in the way? I could have just kicked you and walked over you!" Thatwould do it... he was sure he turned it around now... |

"But... you didn't." And once again he was winning. Then again, he was also curious as to why he didn't, if he really was that hated... |

Curse everything. He hadn't seen that coming. And he didn't have a come-back for that. Whatever, Near could win this one... Mello would come back and make them even again soon enough. It just happened that way. "Fine, whatever... but you better get out of the hallway before someone stupid really DOES step on you." |

Near smiled. Naturally, he hated being given orders, especially when they were from Mello. He would normally ignore them. However, this was one of the times he made an exception... the kind of time when Mello slipped up and started sounding like a good person, before he even realized it. "Sure Mello... thanks." |
