“My name is Adelai Wulf. I got caught up in a riot and was knocked unconscious in 2008. When I woke up I found myself in the year 1976. I don’t know why or how I got here but I do know one thing. I need to get home.” Shouts and jeers called from either side of the barrier. The two opposing groups of protesters were taunting and yelling at each other trying to see who would start the fight first. People pushed and shoved each other either trying to get past or to get away. The entire thing was made up of mixed emotions, hate and fear. Some of the protesters were trying to get away, mostly parents and their children, including a 50 something mother and her 16 year old daughter. Nearing the edge of the crowd they were blocked off by police who were trying to block off the place. Then the first brick was thrown. It didn’t matter what side it came from because in seconds the line separating them smashed into pieces as they charged like battle mongering soldiers. The ones trying to escape either dodged the police and slipped out of site or got caught up in the mayhem, meaning they were trampled or they fought along with the rest. The girl and her parent had managed to duck out of there and made their way to safety. The girl was pushed aside from her mother and spotted a bunch of thugs chasing her mother and a few others down an alley obviously trying to start a fight. Adelai looked over to a police officer and decided against asking for help. They would have arrested or ignored her. She picked up a bottle she’d found on the floor and tossed it at the head of one of the men cornering her mother. “Bastards!” She yelled. They turned and glared at her. Advancing on her, Adelai realised her mistake. She was just a teenage girl and they were fully grown men. They caught her wrists as she was too scared to move. She looked at her mum’s equally terrified expression and suddenly started struggling only to be thrown into a wall which she slid down. Staring up at her attackers she managed to examine one of them in the short amount of time it took them to start hitting her. The man’s face became etched into her memory. He had short dark hair and deep brown eyes with a scar going down the side of his face. Slowly everything blurred and her body numbed itself, the sounds around her stopped and her pain left. Opening her eyes, Adelai found herself kissing the pavement and hearing the shouts of people. Standing up she looked for her mother not caring that the shouts weren’t roars of pain but chants of protests. Her stomach lurched when she realised her mum wasn’t where she had last seen her. “Mum...” Turning on her heels she ran to get help and fell into a large sandy haired man. “Assaulting an officer? Big mistake you little hippy.” “What?” Adelai protested as cuffs were slapped onto her wrists and she was dragged into a police car. Everything was happening so quickly that she barely thought about anything except. “These aren’t my clothes...” Back at the station Sam Tyler was rifling through the mess on his desk left by the idiots in the office. Her finally finished piling his forms when he heard Gene Hunt bellow at poor Chris. “What do you mean she refuses to talk!?” He screamed going red in the face. Sam sighed and decided to go rescue the poor man. “She just won’t say a word Guv. Not even giving her name so we can call her home.” “What’s going on?” Sam asked almost reluctantly. “That hippy sprog I picked up in the riots appears to have gone on strike. First she wouldn’t drink or eat and now she refuses to ruddy talk.” Gene growled. “Maybe I should go talk to her again.” “Maybe, Maybe I should go instead Guv. I mean this is a child we’re talking about.” He put his hand on Gene’s shoulder as he moved towards the lift. “And you aren’t exactly the child friendly type. Cell two right Chris?” Chris nodded. He wasn’t the best with anyone from the opposite sex which is why Sam went too investigated. He left before Gene could pull him back. When he got there he was expecting her to be scared and worried. He realised how wrong he was when he had to dodge a dinner tray. He didn’t get hit but someone behind him happened to walk into his place at the wrong time. Looking up he spotted Gene Hunt caked in spaghetti hoops and mash potatoes. The girl who was standing on the bed and the Guv launched forwards angrily. “Right that’s it you little sprog.” He roared as he stomped towards her she jumped over him pushing down on his back and slid past Sam with ease. Both officers looked at each other before moving after her. Managing to push someone out of the lift she closed it quickly and pressed all the buttons. When it was halfway up she pressed the emergency breaks and locked it there and sat back in the corner breathing heavily. Sam stared at the lift and heard the alarm bell. They weren’t opening. “What happened?” Gene snarled. “She stopped the lift midway. It’s stuck.” He explained in an exasperated tone. “Well get it unstuck and get the brat out. I am going to clean up.” His boss ordered leaving Sam to try and pry the lift open. Fetching a crowbar he returned and managed to accost Chris into helping him open it with some small feat. When it was open he quickly put a bin in the way so it wouldn’t slam shut. Once that was out of the way he dropped down onto the top of the lift making the girl inside curl up further into the corner. He opened the hatch and peered inside glad to find the lights still on. “Are you okay in there?” Adelai stared up at him and tried to get further into the corner as he climbed inside there with her. “Take it easy...I just want to talk.” “I want to talk to my parents but you wankers took my mobile.” Sam blinked for two reasons. A) she had just spoken and B) she was asking for something he vaguely remembered. “You’re what?” He swallowed and stared hard at her. “My mobile, Mobile Phone?” Adelai made a phone symbol with her hand. “What are you stupid.” “What year is it?” Sam asked quickly. “Oh god you are stupid....” Adelai saw the seriousness of his expression. “2008, why?” Sam sunk slowly to the floor and shook his head. “Okay....I understand my coming back here I mean I was a child in this time but you. You’re a child now. You couldn’t be more than fifteen.” “Sixteen.” Adelai corrected and was officially getting freaked out by this copper. “You didn’t even exist during this time. I mean your parents would have been teenagers...” “What the bloody hell are you on about?” Adelai snapped. Sam turned his attention back to the girl quickly realising he was probably scaring her. “Okay you’re going to have to believe me when I say you’ve gone back in time somehow. Well when it first happened to me I was in a coma so maybe you’re in one too. But this isn’t your time period. It’s 1976.” Sam told her very quickly and briefly. “Can you think of any reason why you would be unconscious?” “Well I was being attacked in a riot and it all went black...Wait this is some sort of sick joke isn’t it?” Adelai stood up and glared. “Let me go home it isn’t funny.” “...This isn’t a joke. It’s too impossible to be a joke.” Sam stood up and heard a shout from above. Gene Hunt was kicking up a fuss again. “Listen. I’m not entirely sure how to explain it but I need you to tell these people your name and age at least. I’ll find out what you’re here for till then.” He told her slowly and offered to give a leg up. Adelai took it and climbed onto the top of the lift then found herself being hauled up through the doors by two officers. The one she had hit with a tray before and another who she’d later learn was called Ray. Sam climbed out after and watched the girl being dragged to the interrogation room and followed quickly. “Well?” Gene growled and slammed his hand down on the table. Adelai didn’t even flinch. “Please tell us your name at least.” Sam repeated. After a few moments of silence when they were just about ready to give up she spoke. “Adelai Wulf. Addie for short. I’m 16 I was born on the thirteenth of May.” She told them solemnly. Gene stared at her then at Chris. “Write that down quickly. We might not here a damn thing from her after this.” “You’re recording this interview aren’t you?” Adelai asked curtly and folded her arms nodding at the recorder on the table. “You’re awfully chatty now aren’t you?” Gene crossed his arms and stared at her with venom in his eyes. “I’m also hungry and kinda thirsty.” She grinned at him cheekily. Sam couldn’t help but hide a laugh under cough. He nodded to Chris who walked off to get something to eat and drink. “Chris get some files on her while you’re gone.” |
