Because men don't make sandwiches.
It's the terror of knowing what this world is about, watching some good friends screaming "LET ME OUT!"

I think it's because long ago they were "different" then a man, so they were treated as a lesser being throughout history. Although we seem pretty equal. Also it might be because our hormones and such make a woman's body "weaker" than a man's body would be. I doubt that's what a guy thinks when he's making a "get back in the kitchen" joke to a girl though

I'd say it's a cultural thing. A lot of the atrocities made towards women were probably originally related to sexuality or sexual frustration and as society was formed and morals developed, it became necessary for some men to justify the perpetuation of such things. This was done by restricting women and making them seem inferior to men, and over time, this misogyny took on new forms, became tradition and evolved into a part of our cultural heritage. That's why it's still around today, although it manifests in different ways than it used to.

Of course, there's probably a lot more to misogyny, but that's probably a big part of it.
Stop and smell those concrete roses.
