The moon will appear large in the sky Saturday night and Sunday morning, but that does not mean we’re in for a slew of natural disasters.

The “super moon” will be at its closest point to the Earth all year — appearing 14 percent bigger and as much as 30 percent brighter than other full Moons of 2012, according to NASA. Technically, it’s a perigee moon, which occurs when the moon reaches the nearest point in its oval orbit.

And while the moon does effect tides and other patterns on Earth, this won’t mean earthquakes and tsunamis, as some alleged in the wake of last year’s super moon.

That’s when University of Washington seismologist John Vidale told Life’s Little Mysteries that severe tides can trigger earthquakes. “Both the moon and sun do stress the Earth a tiny bit, and when we look hard we can see a very small increase in tectonic activity when they’re aligned,” Vidale told during the furor surrounding last year’s super moon.

But a studies about the perigee moon’s influence on Earth indicate the slight increase in gravitational pull isn’t cause for concern. “They haven’t found anything significant at all,” Vidale said.

Pretty cool IMO
