The Restless…

That was the funny thing about being dead. In life you got used to certain things; technology and modern inventions like firearms. They were a part of your life and you never once thought about how they worked. Now, with no machines and computers, they were all relying on their memories and the scrapes of trivia that they knew in order to reinvent the most basic of things. An automatic pistol would have been nice right about now, as would have a good cup of coffee…

Hazuki missed the first bit of Yuu’s mumbling and wondered what the fuck a foot had to do with anything. He quickly brushed it off as Yuusuke insanity – a disease that most within The Grandeur knew about – and occupied his mind with slightly more important things. Like not passing out again cause the pain in his ribs and the overly limited breathing was bringing that thread disturbingly close to reality.

“And bull shit that you are in any condition to do a decent job on what I want done,” Hazuki retorted though somehow there wasn’t enough snide anger in his voice for it really be an insult. “He won’t be back,” Hazuki reasoned; he gathered that would be part of Yuu’s paranoia. “Not yet, at least. He needs time to lick his wounds; from what I remember I got him pretty good.” Hazuki almost chuckled at that fact even though the idea of it worked to turn his stomach as well.

“You carried me?” Hazuki asked, slightly disturbed by that notion. Yuusuke was barely taller then him and couldn’t have weighed much more. The idea was almost comical though wholly embarrassing. Then again he hadn’t really given much thought to how he had managed to get inside and even Yuusuke's little mention of him falling thanks to blood loss hadn’t really sunk in. Now it was kinda awkward knowing that his second had had to go out there and pick him up off the floor.

“I think I can stand,” he said affirmatively, not overly wanting to relive that experience again, especially not when conscious. Moving his eyes from that spot on the wall, he felt the room twist and spin again and struggled not to retch once again. “Gonna need some help though,” he finally admitted.

“Better a job then you.” He hissed, mostly to himself, he was getting a little tired of this babble and was feeling his rage spike with every word that Hazuki said. Some how the hand on his chest kept him level, though it served as a constant distraction...why hadn’t it moved?

He sighed and looked away while the man explained that the sin wouldn’t be back. Yuu was being rather irrational, he knew that...but he didn’t want to rule out the possibility of another attack. Even if wrath was licking his wounds, what was stopping another from attacking the hotel?

“Yeah I carried you. You fell into me...and that was the only way to get you inside.” Yuu scoffed. How else did Hazuki think he got inside? His glasses broke at the same time...and a good shirt was ruined by blood. All material of course. But god damn, he still wasn’t sure where he would find glasses again! “Don’t worry, only a few saw it...and if anyone else asks, you walked in here before passing out.” Yuu laughed, making sure Hazuki knew his reputation wouldn’t be damaged by having his second in command carry him.

When Hazuki decided he’d rather stand, Yuu was considerably relieved. The man wasn’t that heavy...but it was like lifting himself...and with so little sleep, that was difficult now. “Stand, right.”

Taking the hand that was still on his chest, Yuu moved so it was hooked over his neck and lowered down to Hazuki’s level before hooking it to his shoulder and standing up, slowly of course. When they were standing straight he moved the man’s arm off his shoulder and stepped away a bit, not fully letting go. “Do you want to walk or do you need help with that?” Yuu didn’t want to assume anything, Hazuki was a proud man...one had to wait to be told to help him.

Well, at least not too many people had seem him getting his ass carried around by his second in command. Though, of course there were far worse fates then being picked up by the other man and Hazuki was overly thankful for the man’s help. Plus, falling into Yuusuke sure as hell beat collapsing onto the pavement.

Wrapping his arm up around Yuusuke’s neck, Hazuki felt even stranger than the idea of having the man carrying him. This whole needing to rely on someone else was a strange feeling and one that he was totally unused to. Not to mention that the way Yuusuke was so damn gentle with helping him up made Hazuki feel fragile and breakable; two things he had never experienced before.

He attempted a smile as Yuu stood back. He was thankful for the gesture but not having the man close was a little unnerving. Hazuki’s legs felt like jelly and the room was doing a strange sort of melding bubbleish thing that made Hazuki think that maybe he was on some form of crack.

None that of that really mattered though, especially not as Hazuki wrapped one arm protectively around his ribs while the other floated in the air beside him for balance. One step, then another and a shaky third and Hazuki felt like he was making progress.

Hobbling across the room, Hauzki tried to concentrate on keeping his balance and keeping his eyes straight ahead. Too much unnecessary looking around caused those horrible waves of nausea to come rushing back and that was the last thing that he wanted. Too much of that and he’d no doubt be getting dragged up the stairs by the other man.

“Just two floors, right?” Hazuki couldn’t keep the hesitation out of his voice. Standing there looking at the first set of stairs seemed hella daunting

Level one was their main base of operations. All open spaces and store rooms, it used to be for conferences back in the day. Now they had it for weapons and food, blankets and random storage so the idea of sleeping there was even more unappealing than the foyer.

Reaching a shaky hand out, Hazuki grabbed onto the railing and practically willed himself up the stairs. Maybe if he just didn’t think about it, it would all be over quicker. Ignore the idea of the effort and the pain and he’d just appear on the second floor. Stranger things had no doubt happened…

Of course he had no such luck and no matter how hard he wished for it, he still wasn’t up the stairs.

“Maybe the foyer isn’t so bad,” he muttered dryly. He would have looked back at Yuusuke but he wasn’t too sure if his queasy stomach could deal with it.

Yuu could only smirk back when Hazuki attempted to smile at him. It was rather odd to see that expression from Hazuki. Yuu just brushed it off as some silent type of thank you for help standing, that made sense.

He yawned despite his best effort, while watching Hazuki take a few wobbly steps forward. At the rate the man was moving...Yuu would be awake for a while. Though this was highly amusing.

It was insensitive to snicker, but that never stopped Yuu before, this time however, he covered his mouth so it wasn’t quite so obvious. He’d normally get hit, or something thrown at him for being that rude, but luckily for Yuu, Hazuki could barely walk, let alone throw things.

“Yeah, two floors.” He chuckled behind his hand before watching Hazuki simply stare. It was taxing, because it was only three floors to a bed for Yuu to sleep in. But he couldn’t help and jump forward when Hazuki’s hand went to grip the railing. He couldn’t help but think the man would fall any minute. Green orbs he began to stalk the other’s movements as if waiting for all hell to break loose again.

He couldn’t help but roll his eyes when the leader gave up. “Oh come on.” Yuu laughed stepping forward and taking hold of Hazuki like he did to stand him up straight. “We’ll say you walked up by yourself.”

The bastard was snickering at him. If he could, Hazuki so would have drop kicked the snide little shit; then again if he could drop kick him there would be no reason to snicker. Stupid circle and Hazuki had to admit that it probably did look pretty funny seeing him flailing as he tried to walk in a semi-straight line. It was not the sort of process that he would want to repeat again any time soon.

The longer he stood there the more daunting the damn stairs looked. Hazuki didn’t like that idea at all.

Hazuki shot Yuusuke a sideways glance, slightly questioning the other man’s actions as he felt his arm getting hefted up again. The damn limb felt so heavy that it seemed an effort for even Yuusuke to move just that.

He couldn’t help the soft, breathy chuckle at Yuu’s words. It wasn’t so much about saving face and keeping his pride in tact as it was setting the example. Right now he could only imagine what those in the hotel were thinking; Wrath had been at their door and given them all a brush with what could have easily been their demise. They’d be panicked and terrified and god only knew what they were thinking about Hazuki’s fight. Some would no doubt be scared of him while others could see it as hope; Hazuki had to use that and get everyone under control and prove that he was still him, in a way.

Most importantly, he had to show that he hadn’t been beaten and that they could survive these things. He needed to get that across as soon as damn possible too; when Wrath came back, Hazuki wanted everyone to be ready; emotionally and mentally equipped to deal with the feelings and their consequences.

Progress was slow, but Hazuki kept his mind focused on that and not the task at hand. It made it easier to breathe through the pain.

When they finally reached the top, Hazuki was pretty sure that he was about to die. His ribs were howling out in pain and not even the arm that he kept so tightly wrapped around them seemed to help. They felt like they were about to jump out of his chest. Tugging at Yuu slightly, Hazuki jabbed his chin in the direction of the wall, hoping the other man would get the picture. He needed a moment to get his breath back, to his head to stop spinning and to battle that persistent pull of darkness that was quickly clouding his vision.

“Give me a sec,” he gasped out. He rested his side against the wall, his head thudding against it slightly while his arm still remained wrapped around Yuusuke's neck. It was too much effort to lift it.

That chuckle was a bit creepy in Yuu’s opinion. The creak of the hotel while wind blew by didn’t help. His paranoia heightened before he closed his eyes for a minute. An instant image of the disgusting beast. “Fuck.” He muttered, eyes shooting open. Deciding to ignore the plaguing image, Yuu began to lead Hazuki up the stairs.

He was beginning to think Wrath’s attack may help the Lost Souls. For quite some time it had been seen as nothing more the a haven for those lost in a new hell. It was time people realized they had a job to do. The fact that Yuu had to yell and scream orders in order for them to over come the anger laced air and do what they were expected to do was piss poor.

When they reached the top of the stairs after a rather slow paced crawl, Yuu realized he was lacking something. Nicotine, he hadn’t smoked since Hazuki had awoken, that was quite some time for him. He was almost relieved when Hazuki directed him toward the wall.

Yuu hadn’t even notice how twitchy his eyes had been until he let Hazuki stop and take a breath. His free hand instantly went to his pocket, where his cigarettes were. Almost in slow motion he brought them from their denim prison to light a stick.

The first drag was always hypnotic, especially when he’d gone so long with him. Yuusuke’s eyes fell shut and for a moment he thought he had awoken from a long slumber. That refreshing feeling, having something you’ve desire so long and couldn’t have, he had this feeling every morning.

Exhaling the smokey contents of his lungs, Yuu was disappointed when he opened his eyes and didn’t see his normal morning scene. Instead it was a rather wounded Hazuki. He smirked down at the leader and twitched his head in the direction their final destination was. “You ready?”

Leaning against the wall, Hazuki let his arm get dropped as Yuusuke moved. The heavy limb all but whacked into the wall; not that Hazuki overly cared. What was one more bruise?

“Fucker,” Hazuki muttered. Even just the smell of the shitty cigarette was getting to him.

When he had first come to Mid Heaven, things had been on the decline. He guessed that the city used to once be it the same state as those in the human world – help the transition of life into death and all that – but with Corruption ruling, things were going to hell. One of those things had been cigarettes. For the first year or so, Hazuki had managed to find old packets from back in the ‘good old days’ but now it was strictly back to shitty, self made rollies made with horrendous tobacco.

The worst thing was that Hazuki could remember that cigarettes in life had been better and he knew that these were nothing in comparison, but fucked if he could really get a grip on what was wrong with them. His life had been too long ago and his memories were starting to get alarmingly blurry, especially when it came to little things like taste and smell.

Then again, come to think of it, Hazuki’s sense of smell seemed to be going to hell of late anyway. He was finding that a little bit odd. He had spent some time wondering if he was getting sick, which, oddly enough did happen in this form of nonlife, but he felt fine other than his blocked nose. Well, he had been fine until last night when he’d gotten the shit kicked out of him, but that was inconsequential.

“Ready as I’ll ever be,” Hazuki muttered. Still his eyes were locked onto the cigarette and his mind was chanting something along the lines of ‘nicotine’ over and over again.

He didn’t want to think about the stairs at all. Or the fact that he wouldn’t be sleeping in his own room. That was on the top level, closest to the stairs that lead to the roof and the guardhouse. There was no way in hell that he could make it that far, so some random, run down room in the hotel would have to do.

Hearing that lovely little name Yuu looked over the man and smirked, smoke now lacing the air in front of him. Yuu remembered well made cigarettes as well, but since he’d gotten to Mid-heaven, he’d gotten used to the shit sticks. They still gave him the unmistakable pleasure nicotine brought to him. The chain smoking habit was nothing new, and he was beginning to believe that not only the nicotine, kept him smoking.

He watched Hazuki twitch at some points, finding it amusing but sad at the same time. He could remember meeting the man...so dignified...but now look at him. A shell of the man Yuu had met two years ago. In retrospect...he was pathetic that day, not Hazuki. Screaming in latin, twitching...it made Yuu cringe just thinking about it.

He hear the nonchalant muttering of Hazuki and finally his attention was directed to the present situation, and not past blunders. “Jesus Christ.” Yuu hissed before taking out another cigarette and placing it between the man’s lips. He didn’t light until after he’d situated them so they could work their ways up the stairs. Taking the first step he reached over and lit the cigarette, not bothering to comment any more. If he got read the riot act at by the medic for giving a cigarette to a man with lung problems...there would be hell to pay.

The cigarette was shoved between his lips in a less then gentle manner and Hazuki would have complained had he been able to move his mouth.

Then again, it was a cigarette and that was something that he really wanted. Fuck the pain in his ribs and his damaged lungs. A cigarette would make all of that better.

Yuusuke took his arm again, looping it up over his shoulders and started them towards the stairs and Hazuki found himself cursing again. For a moment he thought Yuu was about to be a bitch and not light the damn stick. Now that would be torture and Hazuki would honestly rather another round with Wrath then have to suffer through the horrors of having an unlit cigarette. Cruel and unusual. Thankfully, once the first step was out of the way, Hazuki saw the flick of the lighter and the flame was held over the tip. Finding it rather awkward to stand, breath and get the cigarette lit all that the same time, Hazuki let more of his weight fall onto the man’s shoulders until the damn tip finally caught alight.

Finally.

Of course though, it meant that Hazuki couldn’t really use his other hand to help pull himself up the stairs. He needed that appendage to remove the cigarette at consent intervals so that he could take deeper draws and not suffocate himself in the process.

“The medic will kick your ass,” Hazuki tried to joke. It was a little hard to force a laugh, but he managed well enough. But god, the cigarette was good. Somehow it made getting up the flight of stairs easier. He couldn’t breathe, but he was starting to get use to that fact by now. While his body was still screaming out in protest of the movement, he was finding it a little easier to keep it moving now; a second wind, maybe. However, he still breathed out a thankful sigh and muttered a string of random thankyous to no one in particular. Now all that remained was finding a semi-decent room for him to collapse in.

The added weight and pressure from the other made Yuu stumble slightly while he held out his lighter out to the man. He could feel the rotted remains of railing hitting his side while his legs pushed against the weight. Again, Yuu was reminded that he really wasn’t bigger or smaller then Hazuki, so any added pressure was rather difficult to handle.

When it was finally lit, Yuu’s hand quickly moved to push against the rail. He moved them away with a strained jolt before walking up again. He wasn’t all too comfortable with heights, so that had raised his heartbeat...well it would have, if he was still alive. With a burning cigarette hanging from his lips, he continued walking, hands practically glued to the rail.

Yuu laughed lightly at Hazuki’s comment, ash falling from his cigarette as they continued. When they finally reached the top, he had to pry his hands from the rotted wood, it was rather difficult, if given the time, there was no doubt his nails would have made indentations. That was a little too much excitement considering his current state.

“Now how would he find out? You wouldn’t go tell him, would you gimpy?” He scoffed, finally taking the cigarette from his lips and flicking the ash to the floor. He almost expected a swift smack to the back of the head, it seemed logical, thank god Hazuki didn’t have the energy or strength to do it. “Besides, why would a priestly figure condone such vice.” he sneered. His nickname was rather convenient to newcomers, a lot of them thought he was virtuous and kind...until they found otherwise.

They always found otherwise.

“Now pick a room so I can ditch you and go to sleep.”
