The Restless…

That was the funny thing about being dead. In life you got used to certain things; technology and modern inventions like firearms. They were a part of your life and you never once thought about how they worked. Now, with no machines and computers, they were all relying on their memories and the scrapes of trivia that they knew in order to reinvent the most basic of things. An automatic pistol would have been nice right about now, as would have a good cup of coffee…

HAZUKI

DEAD as dead can be!

CHARACTER INFORMATION
Full Name: Hazuki
Band: lynch.
Nickname: Hazu, Ki
Age at Death: 27
Time in Mid Heaven: 8 and a half years
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Wholly uninterested
Affiliation: Lost Soul

LOST SOULS
Member of the Resistance?: Yes
Position: Leader
Talents: Control of fire and heat. He also possesses an unnatural alibility to hunt and stalk his victims and he needs no light to see in the dark.

CHARACTER APPEARANCE
Eye Colour: Hazuki has green eyes which occasionally flash a strange gold.
Hair Colour: Black
Height: 174.3cm
Weight: 54kg
Distinguishing Marks: Hazuki has many, from the way he dresses, to the way he sounds when he talks and to the more obvious tattoos. Both arms are covered in intricate designs, some of which resemble yakuza tats though he had no ties to the gangs when alive.

CHARACTER PERSONALITY
Likes: Order, intelligence, cigarettes and swords.
Dislikes: Both the light and the dark, Sin takers, idiocy and cowardliness.
Strengths: Hazuki is good at reading people; he had plenty of experience while being a cop. He is also a natural leader and has the ability to inspire those who follow him. His clear mind and level headedness means that he can quickly plot and plan for any situation and since being in Mid Heaven he has become very handy with a sword.
Weaknesses: His compassion. While he is more often then not described as heartless and a merciless leader, he does it all for those souls that wander the night, looking lost and refusing to join with any side. Any who follow him will always come first to Hazuki and he would happily sacrifice himself to save them.
Common Knowledge: He holds no love for either darkness or light and is of the belief that if the humans can eliminate both, then they could easily govern themselves and achieve resurrection. It is also common knowledge that Hazuki, as one of the oldest lost souls, is starting to show some degree of control over the element of fire.
Secrets: Hazuki is starting to notice changes in himself that go beyond the norm suffered by other lost souls and that aren’t related to the typical elemental changes. He is oddly attracted to shiny and things that move and the idea of the hunt is becoming more and more appealing.
Personality: Hazuki was a born leader, a trait which easily carried on into the after life. He carries himself with a strong sense of conviction and has the ability to choose the right words at the right time. He can just as easily inspire the masses as he can put fear into their hearts and he is not above using that to his advantage.

While he is dedicated to his cause and to those that follow him, he does not sulk in the face of defeat or death. Some might say that he is cold and heartless and pays no attention to lost lives, but in reality he feels every loss. Calculating and cunning, he recognizes the need to fight and also to lose at times, though each attack is always working towards the bigger goal. Hazuki doesn’t see the point of winning all the battles if it won’t change the outcome of the war itself.

Despite this trait, he has the habit of being a bit of a smart ass and possesses a rather dry, cynical sense of humour. He tells things how they are and isn’t one to sugar coat his words unless he needs to.

CHARACTER HISTORY
Nationality: Japanese
Significant Other: None
History: Hazuki ties not to think of his past human life too much. What he does remember and acknowledge is that he used to be a cop – a detective – and that he was on the case of a serial killer when he met his end. He knows that his investigations brought him too close to the killer and he also knows that it resulted in him being the next victim. He doesn’t remember too much about his death, other than the fact that it happened at night, in his apartment and that the killer was unnaturally strong.

Waking up in the land of the dead had been a shock. Never a religious man, he hadn’t known what to expect though the sight he was met with was one he never could have imagined. He woke up in a battle field, not a hot spring like legends say, and the warriors he saw fighting were not human. They roared and twisted, their bodies taking on the forms of animals as others burst into flame and ice alike. Those that where unlucky enough to lose their heads or sustain fatal wounds burst into shimmering ash that was swept away with the breeze.

Hazuki did the only thing he could. He picked up a discarded sword and ran for the sidelines, cutting down anything that stood in his way. He didn’t stop running until he was in the heart of a darkened city. Picking his way over crumbling stone and wading through waste deep grass, he discovered a group of people just like himself. The eldest of the group, a wizened old man, explained that Hazuki was dead and that the after life was at war; there was no moving on.

Not buying that explanation, Hazuki decided that the humans needed to stop waiting for these apparent ‘light ones’ to save them and take matters into their own hands. He was the man to start the resistance.

For a two and a half years he organized and led resurrection parties; small groups of humans that would commit raids on the Gate of Resurrection in hopes of sneaking a few through to be reborn. There were numerous chances for Hazuki to enter the next life but he always opted out, staying as guard and protector to those that couldn’t make it.

Eventually the raids were less and less effective as the dark ones became more organized and suspicious. Lost souls were being killed with each attack and everyone knew that to die here meant to completely cease to exist.

Calling the raids off, Hazuki opted for a different approach. He set up headquarters in an old hotel in the middle of the city; it became a safe haven for those souls in need and a base of operations for those who, like himself, were willing to fight. Now they consider themselves the resistance and call themselves The Lost Souls; they are the dead who are not ready to lay down and wait for heavenly intervention.

Six years later, Hazuki remains unchallenged for leadership and while the wasteland around them gets steadily worse, Hazuki keeps hope alive in the Lost Souls. Some even say that he could singlehandedly bring down all the dark ones if he put his mind to it, while others, in smaller, darker corners, question the purity of his blood. Rumours spread like wildfire, talking of an ability to predict the future and of a strange golden fire that burns in his eyes whilst in battle…

Roleplay Sample:

Hazuki ducked behind a section of fallen stone. His back pressed to the rough surface as he kept his head and shoulders below the large crack line that divided the crumbling wall into sections. It wasn’t the best cover in the world, but it would do. All he needed was a few moments.

Winding the spring lock back, Hazuki braced the crossbow between his feet as the gears pulled the string back. It was a heavy bloody thing and not all that quick to load but it sure as hell could shoot and that was all that mattered. Until they worked out a better version of a gun, these archaic weapons would have to do.

It was quite stupid really – especially with how many souls there were in Mid Heaven – that none of them knew these basic things and if given a doover at his previous life, Hazuki knew that he would have wanted to pay more attention in mechanics.

The creature screeched overhead, its almost invisible wings flapping in the air and stirring up the ash at Hazuki’s feet. Grunting to himself, he trapped the sting in the hold and removed the crossbow bolt from between his teeth. Shoving it into the chamber, he guided the forked end to the string and locked it all to the spring activated trigger.

Locked and loaded, Hazuki sprung to his feet, raised the mighty weapon and aimed it at the demonic foot soldier swooping through the air.

This would be fun.
