How to Ride a Horse When riding the horse, the horse is the one who moves and the rider stays stationary on their back. In all sense of it, the horse is in control of everything from turning to moving forward technically. However, people who ride are required to roleplay while doing so; the rider tugs on the reins and says "whoa" for example and hopefully the horse will listen, but sometimes a horse can be stubborn!
