Since Asteroids doesn't really have a plot, they have the freedom to make up the plot themselves. Meanwhile, being based on a world-famous video game will probably increase awareness of the movie, selling tickets. Like the articles says: Peter Sciretta I’m sure the only catch is that the movie has to feature a spaceship destroying an asteroid.
