Very interesting and pretty much echoes my findings. I'm just not running Karmic! I'm running older versions (this is Intrepid) and Lucid (in some cases modified back to legacy grub coz' grub2 simply wouldn't work!). Mint sounds like a "repaired" version of Karmic but is still giving problems on some of my equipment. :( I'm expecting to have another go when I've sorted out more of my G-Weather app.

ATM the AMD64 is not in use, though I think it's usable in fact. The Medion P4 is currently my main production machine running Intrepid - it is running 24/7 almost flawlessly so far. I had a sound problem (like no sound at all!) but an update has fixed that :) Kompozer is now working with the latest beta version downloaded from SourceForge. I found a thread in the Ubuntu Forums about the problem I was getting. The other P4 is also running 24/7 flawlessly with Intrepid and handling my weathercam. That was a good buy for me :) It's a quality machine. And it's quiet!! :) :)

Intrepid was a good release and probably all in all the best Ubuntu version for me.

The more I use Mint the more I like it. Its hard to believe its based on Karmic.
Although Mint is derived from Ubuntu I believe it also draws directly from Debian, so its not just another `buntu variant. Maybe thats why it seems to have solved some of the issues Ubuntu seems to have?

Ah yes, that makes sense :)

I might take a break from G-Weather and set up the AMD64 and try Mint on that. I think my cold is interfering with my thinking so maybe time to do something simpler :lol

I think your set ups are more complex than mine. I basically have just dual boot set ups on both laptop and desktop, so its straightforward. For me Mint goes on, finds the other partition and job`s a good un. :thumbsup
You have multiple installs and more complex partition tables plus Grub to deal with.

We have all been a bit off here for about a week. Feeling low and just....well not right. Yesterday I noticed my youngest had several suspicious looking spots on his back. He was happy enough though and went to school. When he came home he was covered in hundreds of spots! Chickenpox! :rofl
He is ok. Feeling a bit uncomfortable and plastered in calamine. I`m thinking even though the rest of us have had chickenpox maybe we still react a little to the virus? My mrs has been feeling rough and I`m half expecting her to have shingles.

I've had shingles - it ain't nice!!! :( I had it in my left leg and it left me with a bit of nerve damage leading to numbness and occasional pain in my left foot :( Sorry you've all been feeling low and hope your youngest soon recovers from the Chicken Pox - I had it when I was nearly seven. Hope your wife doesn't get shingles Trev and that you all feel better soon :) :) My cold is a bit better today though still annoying me!

Well I am feeling better coz I`ve just installed Mint 8 in place of UE on the laptop. It was the easiest, smoothest and quickest install I have ever done.

Also took very little time to get it all set up how I like.
First put in my wireless pass key and hit the updater and installed all the updates.
Did a restart even though it didn`t ask for one.
Compiz is ready to rock out of the box, and I just needed to open up compizconfig settings manager (from Control Center) and enable the extra plug ins I use:
Desktop Cube, Rotate Cube, 3D Windows, Animations Add on, Cube Refection and Deformation, Wobbly Windows, and one of my favourites which is Group and Tab Windows.

Next I fired up the Package Manager and installed Emerald (theme manager), wine, and a few games. (gnome games, armagetron and gnome breakout, just to get a games sub menu going).
Next I downloaded a deb of emerald themes from HERE and ran that to load up Emerald with some nice window themes..
Finally - Control Center>Startup Applications and added "emerald --replace" to make emerald the default window themer.
After a reboot all was done :cool
