I`ve come over all minty

I have installed mint on 3 pen drives (one for me which I`m using as I type, a second as backup and a third for someone else).
I have installed mint on 3 laptops in the last few days and also talked someone through a mint install and setup over the phone. Will install it on the desktop tomorrow and replace my old UE2.3 on the lappy as well.

As you can probably tell....I quite like it :thumbsup

I installed Mint on my AMD64 tonight but have a problem. The screen is over-scanning in the vertical direction by about double, with the top half visible (only) :( So I can't access the menu to install the right driver :(

It didn't find Lucid in the installation but did find the other systems, So I booted into a Karmic system, installed the webcam app and copied my .webcamrc setup file across, to get my weathercam working again. I was hoping to run it under Mint :(

Awww. Thats the first time I`ve come across an issue with Mint Gina. Sounds like a glitch rather than a proper fail if you can get some of the desktop up. I would definitely try again either from recovery mode to set up the screen res or look into installing a newer graphic driver from the console. Remember Mint is based on Ubuntu/Debian and you can use the same method (console commands) you would with `buntu.

Mint is simply the best distro I have used and although I have yet to come across a problem with it, I would say it is definitely worth the effort to get it up and running. you won`t be disappointed Gina.

What is the graphics card ati, nvidia or intel ?

Edit....Could this be a monitor issue rather than a graph driver?

Also I would definitely post this issue on the mint forums.

This has always been a problem with this graphics chipset and monitor combination :( It's an nvidia GeForce chipset on-board. I can't use Kubuntu for the same reason. The Gnome desktop is OK because the menu is at the top and accessible. The separate graphics card I had in the AMD64 is now in the Medion P4. The monitor now on the AMD64 is the 17" 1280x1024 TFT Samsung. I might try connecting my new 22" monitor and see if that works.

I'm thinking of getting a new graphics card for the AMD64 - an ATI one from Amazon, around 30 quid. It seems ATI are better supported than nvidia now. It's a slightly higher spec than the GeForce 9400 GT, now in the Medion. I had no problems at all with the older ATI card I had in the Medion (dumped from that because it won't support the res of my 22" monitor).

Might put Mint on the other P4.

It sounds like you need to upgrade the drivers from the command line.
if you press Alt +F2 in Mint you get a nice list of apps including a terminal so you might be able to do it that way or else get the command prompt via boot menu.
Here`s some of the things I`m thinking...........
I would try to install the drivers and nvidia settings manager, and do an update from command console.
Maybe some of these commands...
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-177
sudo apt-get install nvidia settings
You can run the settings manager from sudo nvidia settings
Or you could try installing Envy and run that from command line??
Sudo apt-get install envy.

Tried to install Mint on my no.2 P4. The Live CD got as far as displaying the logo and no further. I used Intrepid to resize the XP partition and make new partitions for itself and Mint. So now have 15GB XP, 1GB swap, 8GB Intrepid, 20GB I-Home, 8GB Mint, 23GB Mint-Home (roughly). So mint is again on the back burner and I'm running Intrepid and my weathercam on my newly acquired P4. No display problems with this box :)

I WILL GET MINT WORKING YET!!!
