NOD32 farewell

Eset have announced they are discontinuing NOD32 v2

I have used NOD32 v2 for quite a few years. I regard it as the best antivirus program.
A couple of years back ESET decided to change their NOD32 and also offer a suite type all in one solution complete with anti spyware, firewall etc. Eset thought they would gain more customers by changing their AV into something similar to Nortons, McAfee, etc.
Many die hard NOD32 users - me included- were not happy with the direction Eset were going in. The new versions (Eset Security Suite and Eset AntiVirus) were much bulkier than the super slim and fast NOD32 v2.7 and suffered bugs and issues that were not previously found in the rock steady v2.7
It also emerged that if you didn`t want the full suite (with Esets built in firewall) the new stand alone AV had issues with a number of third party firewalls rendering them useless. (the ekrnl loop back issue). So you had to find a firewall that could bypass Eset AVs loop back. (fortunately Online Armor can do this).
Well now they are pulling the plug on the original version. After Feb you will not be able to download v2.7 Updates for v2.7 users will continue till feb 2012.
A sad day and another case of "progress" offering an inferior solution.

Just to add - Thankfully for me, I rarely use Windows, so its no biggie. I know quite a few people who use Windows and NOD32 v2.7 and they will have to look elsewhere for protection. :shrug

Bite the bullet and tell them to use MSE, even though you dislike M$ at least it is light, fast and works well unlike some of the shite Snorton etc. pump out

I did that just the other day mate. Someone with a new laptop.
They`re going to use Ubuntu mostly, and just needed protection for if/when they ever use Windows.
