Bought a fryer today....Just got sick to death of bloody oven chips. Not that we eat them that much, but when we do.....I had bought into this healthier blah blah bollards....yeah healthier chips that are dry and tasteless - some burnt while others are uncooked, etc. Put some oven chips in the fryer What a belter...I had almost forgotten what real chips tasted like. I wonder what the true quantifiable health difference is between oven chips and chips fried in vegetable oil? I bet its negligible. |

I would have thought so as oven chips are coated with vegetable oil. I had a deep fat fryer some time ago. Loved it at first but later got fed up with cleaning it and dealing with a gallon of oil. The oil went off quite quickly I found and then needed disposing of and more oil bought. I tried olive oil which gave very nice results but cost the earth so went back to plain vegetable oil. Trouble was, that after the olive oil the fried food tasted rather bland with the cheaper oil. Anyway, not to spoil your enthusiasm.. if you like chips etc fried in veg oil, then stick to it. Olive oil costs a lot more. You'll get fish shop chips from veg oil - that's what they use these days. Fried food was only really bad for you when lard or dripping was used for frying. Now that WAS delicious... but probably terribly bad for you, they tell us! One more thing - be very careful - hot oil can give you a very nasty burn! It can catch fire too! ![]() Finally... ENJOY IT

We have not had a chip pan for about 15 years, we just go to the chippy once a month for a treat

My deep fat fryer is used more often for chicken portions than chips. Occasionally for unbattered fish
