Looks like the Btrfs file system will be offered as an option in Lucid and I guess is going to be the default file system in future releases. Basically its a clone of Suns` ZFS but under GPL. The clone/snapshot capability looks especially cool ![]() A bit more info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Btrfs |

Seems ext4 is just a stop-gap between ext3 and btrfs. They didn't tell us that when we were encouraged to go for ext4 as being "the best thing since sliced bread"! The info says it will upgrade automatically from ext3 but doesn't say about ext4! Rather too many file system changes in a short time IMO - makes me feel rather cautious!

I found out about ZFS some while back (touted as the ultimate file system) and thought it would be good to have it in Linux. I think btrfs will be brilliant once they`ve got it tuned up. It is meant to be very fast as well a the other benefits. Somewhere down the line Microsoft will start to use this type of file system too, which will mean instant recovery from disaster/malware etc with a file snapshot option. |
