Now I've got the basics working, I'm looking into the "bells and whistles" and general improvements in presentation. To this end I've bought "Gnuplot in Action" and have ordered a tome on Python programming Both from Amazon UK.

Will do Once I've done some swapping around of boxes I'll be getting back on it. ATM there are no updates due shutdown of my AMD64 I'm resting ATM but I'll get back to it shortly ![]() Got a book on gnuplot "Gnuplot in Action: Understanding Data with Graphs" which I've been reading and also I have "Beginning Python: From Novice to Professional 2nd Edition (Books for Professionals by Professionals)" on order - both from Amazon UK ![]() Two sub-projects in design, gauges and a banner for my signature. I'm also adding info about the weather station hardware, location and modifications. You can see my dabblings on the Development Test Page available from the Home page. |

Now have three boxes in a row sitting on the floor with monitor, keyboard and track ball on table. ATM the Medion P4 is updating Lucid. Typing this on the laptop. I tried the AMD64 and it started up but wasn't right. So that one's out of action until I can find the problem. The 2nd hand P4 works but only has XP Pro on it ATM. I'll be sticking Ubuntu on it. I have to decide whether to stick with the 80GB HD supplied and resize XP or swap a drive out of the Medion. The built-in graphics only does up to 1280x1024 OK for my older monitor but somewhat lacking for my new (replacement) 22" WS job which does 1920x1080. |

G-Weather is now running on the Medion P4 in Ubuntu Lucid. Copied everything from the AMD64 (which I persuaded to work again for several minutes) to the P4. Installed a few extras like python usb support and gnuplot and it's now working ![]() Might install Mint onto the other P4

I've been swapping bits around between computers to get one desktop working that I can use to access my weather station console, process and upload the data to my weather web site. As I think I've said, I've just bought a new monitor to replace my 22" Samsung which went on the blink (literally) then finally stopped working completely. The new one (though cheaper) does a higher resolution 1920x1080, full p1080 HD, and wouldn't work with my older Medion P4 PC. Putting the more modern graphics card from my AMD64 PC into the Medion now gives me full graphics capabilities. PC box is now back in it's place on the hearth with 22" monitor on a little table in front of me while I sit on the settee, nice and comfortable ![]() Meanwhile, my AMD64 needs a touch of fault-finding, but first, I'm getting my G-Weather weather station software working on the Medion. It isn't yet! Edited by Gina, Jan 30 2010, 12:55 PM.

Well, they're no longer in a row on the floor. One's still one the floor - the latest acquisition, the Medion P4 is on the hearth and the AMD64 is on the table where it's been stripped of it's GeForce 8400GT GC. Graphics is now from the on-board chipset. Which works as far as display is concerned. Now have Intrepid running on the Medion. I'm sure I've used USB sticks on this machine before but I'm darned if I can get it to work now!! So it looks like I'll have to burn one of those 5" optical things!

Now have G-Weather working again In Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid. I'll look into Mint and the AMD64 later.

Extended the pole carrying the wind sensors this afternoon. Wind vane does seem better behaved ![]() Been converting my web pages to use CSS as there are getting to be quite a number of them. Also added Credits & Acknowledgements page. |

I've at last got an attempt at a banner Very crude ATM but it does at least include live data. This is written in Python controlling gnuplot to produce a PNG image file which is uploaded to my web site and linked here. Steep learning curve! I shall be working on improving it. Such things as :- a) Face and size of fonts. b) Coloured text c) Coloured background d) Border e) Degree sign for temperature f) Clickable image to link to web site |

Well done, thats in impressive piece of work I think the border, colours etc will finish it off nicely. Little icons or images for the tools are always good. Thermometer, barometer etc. |

Still working on the new banner - meanwhile, I've had a break and squeezed up the one I'm using here. This one uses gnuplot (as I said) but the new one will be using ImageMagick, a vastly more versatile app for building images Also quite different Totally new territory and nothing like the modules I've been modifying. For plots not using graphs it seems much more suitable that gnuplot.Apart from being crude monochrome, the gnuplot version has some other faults. The data for all the banner data uses the same data table - the hourly data - whereas the temperature and wind could do with being almost instant (raw data), the rain wants to be the daily rain up to the present and the barometer should show the average pressure and trend over the last three hours. This is not feasible with the main structure of the software. Edited by Gina, Feb 15 2010, 09:36 PM.

Well.... I've fixed the data sources so the rainfall is now today's rainfall up to the time logged. I'm learning all the time Achieving what I thought I couldn't do

As can be seen, I've finally got the new format banner working. I've attacked the problem from a different direction, adding bits to the gnuplot banner module and temporarily abandoning my totally separate module built from the ground upwards. I may pursue the latter when I've learnt some more Python! Particularly passing parameters between modules. |

G-Weather is now mostly OK but a couple of errors remain. The Months Table is showing the wrong months and the 7 days table is not showing today (though this may be considered a minor point). Otherwise it's now a matter of tidying up before moving on to the next phase of a GUI for displaying data on the local computer and entering settings and calibration values. I would be grateful for feedback if any other errors remain that I've not picked up or any comments and suggestions for improvements. Thank you
