I've got VB working again on my AMD64 - hosted by Ubuntu. I found the reason Cumulus wasn't working in the XP guest OS - the net connection had stopped working so it couldn't ftp my website. I closed Cumulus, ran XP updates and Avira, then shut XP down. Just to be complete, I closed VB, then ran it again, started XP, and checked net connection in Firefox - OK now. So I copied my latest Cumulus data from the P4 and started up Cumulus. All now running perfectly :) :)

It's gone wrong again. Same trouble - lost LAN connection. Repeated the turn off - turn on procedure again and LAN and internet connection is back. Currently running the XP SP3 update with Cumulus running in XP on the P4 again. This is annoying!! And needs fixing! But I'm not defeated yet! :lol

Running Cumulus in VB again :) I had VB running over 24 hrs and still had working Firefox. I've installed SP3 in XP - don't know if it'll make any difference. If Cumulus is still working when I go to bed I'll leave it and see if it's still going tomorrow. Previously it's stopped after an hour or so.

Nope!! It's failed again - no net connection. No LAN connection to the NAS.

This was the last update!! So it lasted less than an hour!! :(

Correction - Started about 8:35pm and stopped 8:43 - LESS THAN TEN MINUTES!!

Odd - VB runs fine for hours without Cumulus though not with periodic net access. Have to have a think - find something to access the net periodically and see if that causes the trouble, or if it's down to Cumulus.

Anyway, enough testing for now, going back to the working arrangement.

Have some test results :-

1. VB runs continuously for hours without Cumulus running and after that time net/LAN access is fine.
2. Cumulus running and ftp'ing in VB fails within 10mins and after that time net/LAN access has failed.
3. Cumulus running without ftp enabled also fails with loss of net/LAN access.

Conclusion so far - Cumulus causes VB LAN access to fail whether or not it's using the network. Cumulus USB access to weather station appears to continue after LAN access failure.

Time to go on the Cumulus forums perhaps. Anyway, I'll give it more thought. Maybe think up some more tests.

It could also be a VB issue I guess :shrug

What happens when you try to run Cumulus under Wine?

Yes, it could be.

Last time I tried under Wine the USB didn't work but that was some time ago now. I've been reading the Wine wiki and forum and although there are still some problems, it looks like the USB support may be better. I have been thinking of trying Wine again. I think I'll try Karmic for that to get the latest Wine. Wine is not in Lucid yet, I gather. Anyway, that would be asking for trouble :lol

Wine works well OOTB in UE 2.3 I found.
If you are installing under Karmic i would say do it from Synaptic and just tick "wine". I have run into trouble with it in the past trying to install the latest version and all that. The simple default Synaptic route is the way to go.

OK thanks :) I'll run it in UE 2.3 then - that's what I'm in ATM anyway :lol

Been having a good read of the Cumulus forums :) Got a bit carried away actually :lol

I think you still need to patch Wine to get usb to work :(
It means cloning the git repository an adding 2 txt patches.

I`m not sure I can follow it tbh Gina. I have use git versions of compiz in the past but it seems beyond me somehow....I`ll have to read some tutorials....... if I can find any

Just to add, I would dearly love Wine to have usb driver support so I could run my Guitar Rig which uses a usb foot pedal controller. Its the only thing I have to use Windows for. :(

Yes! Tried Wine - no USB! :( This AMD64 seems to be crashing just as much as ever now! Just been playing with VB again and it crashed. Of course, it could be VB that did it. Anyway I'm now running Karmic in frustration and clutching at straws. I haven't got a VB setup in this yet. Might try starting over. Means installing XP again of course which is a bit of a pain after Ubuntu :(

I'll follow your USB link... Thanks :)

I had a read and soon realized I was right in my assumption......it is well beyond me :rofl

I will have to wait for Wine to include usb support (or for a patched version of wine to be released).

Other than that I am still dreaming of a Macbook to run my Guitar Rig. :shrug

AARRGGHH!!!!! WOW!! That's COMPLICATED!!! Need a really clear head for that and I don't know when I'm going to have a clear enough head for that! :( I'm already 2 or 3 levels deep in the hierarchy of nested references!! Quote something like "git is used for kernel development" This looks like high power development stuff. Would have caused me no trouble at one time but I'm retired from software development at that level now! And my brain is not what it used to be! :(

Getting an error report of a "serious kernel problem" blah blah. I ran the error report collection and posted it and it said the problem was already known on launchpad - or something like that. So much for Karmic!. So... back to Jaunty in the form of UE 2.3. I feel like hibernating!! :lol

Just had another look at that Wine USB stuff and I still say AARRGGHH!! I think it would be easier to re-write Cumulus for Linux than sort that lot out! :rolleyes

I wonder if I am up to programming still :lol
